Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the onset of this research, approximately 24.1% of superintendents in the United States and 15.7% of superintendents in North Carolina were women. These statistics indicate a national gap of 51.9 percentage points and a 68.6 percentage point gap in North Carolina for gender representation in the superintendency. To better understand the under representation of women in the superintendency, I studied the experiences of how female superintendents in North Carolina were/are being mentored, as well as how they have/are mentoring others. This study explored the mentoring experiences of seven female superintendents in North Carolina to determine the impact such experiences play in reproducing the gendering of leadership roles. The impact of mentoring experiences on subjectivity, agency, and women's access to the superintendency was also explored. Poststructural feminism served as the theoretical lens to inquire about practices that reinforce socially constructed beliefs which associate leadership styles with gender and the extent to which these may impact access for women to the superintendency. The results of the study not only contribute to recommendations for improving mentoring experiences and opportunities for women aspiring to the superintendency, but also identify ways that mentoring can support the work of both men and women in creating a more equitable system. The findings of the research suggest that current superintendents have immense power in women's access to the superintendency. As mentors, they can provide proteges with authentic job opportunities, model a variety of effective leadership practices and provide reflective and supportive discourse with and about proteges. Using these strategies positively impact the proteges subjectivity within educational leadership. The results also indicate that socially constructed patriarchal assumptions about leadership and gender are still deeply embedded and more work is needed to deconstruct these assumptions as they complicate women's access to and work within the superintendency."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: This study examines gender differences in leadership style and the influence of these differences on perceived leader effectiveness in higher education. Leadership style is defined in gendered terms, which include traditionally agentic styles for men and communal styles for women, and therefore transformational and transactional leadership styles are closely examined. Data were gathered from a two-stage national survey of college presidents and their senior-level leaders, faculty, and administrators from over 200 postsecondary institutions in the United States to analyze these differences in leadership style and leader effectiveness. Multiple block regression analyses demonstrate that gender has a mild correlation with perceived effectiveness, with female presidents being slightly more likely to be perceived as effective leaders. In addition, transformational leadership, which is often connected with communal leadership behaviors, is highly correlated with leader effectiveness. These findings are consistent with the literature in that transformational leaders that exert communal and relational leadership behaviors are usually viewed as more effective leaders than their transactional counterparts that enact agentic behaviors. Finally, institutional context also has a strong relationship with perceived effectiveness for both leaders and subordinates. The research results have implications for transformational leadership training, mentoring, fostering female leadership, and improving institutional context.

Specifically, this qualitative research study examined the backgrounds and leadership experiences of multiple women administrators to better understand the communication factors that contribute to their success. Further, this study sought to examine the various and important ways that interpersonal communication dynamics affected the leadership styles of women administrators in higher education. Data from this study informs current leaders, and future leaders, about the ways in which their leadership behaviors are affected. Eight women executives from different Southern California higher education institutions were interviewed, in-person, with themes such as collaboration, exclusion, and perception being explored. The data from this research study showed how Communication Studies concepts are poignantly and inextricably bound to leadership, and multiple recommendations for future practice are offered to current leaders in order to enhance their success as leaders.

Book excerpt: While independent schools are a small sector of the American school system, they educate a significant cross section of society. Creating equitable models of leadership in their top administrative positions is important as students see those models and equate them with what leaders look and act like. This study examined leadership styles of heads of independent schools, focusing on the spectrum of transformational and transactional leadership. It examined general and specific factors leading to gender inequity in top JK-12 educational administration. It offers a foundation for discussion about education and educational administration by presenting the history of the American educational structure. The literature review includes research about educational administration and leadership, as well as the explanation of three theories emerging from the study of leadership differences between men and women. A discussion of leadership styles follows, highlighting literature focusing on the barriers women encounter in attaining leadership roles. The voices and stories of those women who have attained top educational leadership positions conclude the literature review, providing a full spectrum of issues ranging from the inception of the educational system to the reasons for the current disparity of women at the head of school level. This study presents a national study of independent school leadership. Using a mixed methods approach, the study includes quantitative data about leadership styles of heads of school, as well as other demographic indicators that highlight their paths and leadership roles. The qualitative portion of the study culminates in one-on-one interviews with eight female heads of schools to examine their experiences in achieving top educational administration positions. The study results demonstrate that heads of independent schools are generally transformational leaders in their styles. Further, it illuminates the fact that female heads demonstrate more transformational leadership styles than their male counterparts. It also indicates that male heads of school ascended to headship faster than women. Finally, it outlines how the individual voices of female heads collectively indicate that female heads' natural styles of leadership, which are based in relationships, lend themselves to the characteristics of transformational leadership.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this mixed method study is to determine if women who lead secondary schools have gender bias experiences that might influence their leadership styles. The study focused on the accounts of five women who lead secondary schools, their gender bias experiences, their perceived leadership style and whether or not they believed the experience influences how they lead. Through in-depth interviews and survey completion, the data from both sources revealed the common leadership styles and gender bias experiences among the research participants. When examining the shared experiences three salient themes emerged: (a) A belief that gender bias still exists in educational leadership, (b) The influence the experience had on the leaders, and (c) Why the participants chose transformative leadership as the leadership style they subscribe to identify within their leadership work. Each participant held different experiences but shared both common leadership styles and common rationales for their leadership style adoption.
