Book The Fierce Country

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Orr
  • Publisher : Wakefield Press
  • Release : 2018-06-28
  • ISBN : 1743055749
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book The Fierce Country written by Stephen Orr and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fierce Country holds no malice, but neither pity. It just sits, and bakes, and waits. We do the rest. We provoke it when we mine above its aquifers. Weaken it, and ourselves, when we leave mountains of asbestos to blow away in the wind. Misunderstand it when we see it as nothing more than a resource. Resent it when it takes our children. The open spaces and isolated places outside Australia's cities have unsettled us from first European settlement to today - often with very good reason. In this nail-biting book combining the notorious and little-known, acclaimed author Stephen Orr has collected true stories that have shaped and continue to haunt the Australian psyche: mysteries, disappearances, mistreatment and murder. Fatal conflicts between an Aboriginal tracker and the police employers hunting his community. An itinerant conman picking up tips for the perfect murder from a famous novelist around a campfire on the Rabbit-Proof Fence. And that fateful day when Peter Falconio pulled over beside a desert highway. Together these tales chart an undercurrent of shifting cultural tensions as Australians find, lose and question who we are.

Book Bizarrism Vol 1

Download or read book Bizarrism Vol 1 written by Chris Mikul and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bizarrism is a collection of strange-but-true tales, featuring a grand parade of eccentrics, visionaries, crackpots, cult leaders, artists, theorists and outsiders of every stripe. First published in 1999, this new, fully revised and expanded edition revisits a host of unique individuals, including: William Chidley, who believed that, when it comes to sex, we’ve all been making a terrible mistake; Arthur Cravan, who combined poetry with boxing; Slim Gaillard, jazz singer and dispenser of ‘vout’; William Lindsay Gresham, author of the classic noir novel Nightmare Alley; Rosaleen Norton, Australia’s most notorious witch; Harry Crosby, poet, sun worshipper and the best looking corpse of 1929; Reginal Levgiac, author of the mysterious pamphlet Drugs Virus Germs. In writing their stories, Mikul does not judge, but instead celebrates these characters for their fabulous weirdness. For him, they are the “beacons of shining if erratic brilliance in a world of sensible conformity”. The world would be a poorer place without them.

Book I Know Who Killed Betty Shanks

Download or read book I Know Who Killed Betty Shanks written by Ted Duhs and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Betty Shanks was brutally murdered 70 years ago. This book’s third edition reveals Betty’s secret life as documented in an ASIO file, which states that: - Betty was in an ‘intimate association’ with a young married man who was a member of the Communist Party of Australia. - Betty’s best friend from schooldays at Brisbane Girls Grammar School and at the University of Queensland, Winifred Cowin, worked for ASIO before committing suicide in 1958. - An ASIO officer arrived in Brisbane on Sunday 21 September 1952 to recruit Betty, only to be told that she had been murdered the previous Friday night. Ted Duhs alleges that Betty was killed by a man she met at the Grange tram terminus as she returned home from a night class at Brisbane’s Central Tech. This man, referred to as ‘the man in the brown suit’, was seen by four witnesses, including Marie Patton who is still alive. Minutes before Betty was attacked, Marie saw him 30 yards from the murder scene. Evidence suggests he was Eric Sterry. His daughter, Desche, is still alive, and in 1999 her story “My Dad Killed Betty Shanks” was published in The Courier Mail, after her earlier attempts to persuade the police were unsuccessful.

If so, those that gather in the middle of a potato field in a small Baptist chapel in Tenthill in rural Queensland, Australia have had a lot of life interfere with their plans. They have had to deal with whatever nature, circumstances, and the Lord himself seems to hurl at them. These are real sermons addressed to real people to address real situations. The messages touched hearts when they were preached, and you should find them refreshing and encouraging as you deal with life and your plans for the future. The subjects could not be more diverse, including drought; untimely death; the temple of Artemis in Ephesus; appointing pastors, elders, and deacons; and the author’s love of colorful shirts. Yet all speak of the gospel of the love, faithfulness, and forgiveness of Jesus. There will be messages you love inside. They are different from any preaching you are used to.
