The Lady for whom the plant was named must have been a dwarf, for her mantle grows no more than six inches in height. Book Making a Garden to Bloom This Year Classic Reprint

Download or read book Making a Garden to Bloom This Year Classic Reprint written by Grace Tabor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a Garden to Bloom This Year The design to be employed for a garden planned for only one season is not so vital as the design which permanent planting de mands; nevertheless, it should be as good as it can be, under the limitations which the character Of the soil may impose, or which are imposed by unalterable condi tions. I speak of the soil conditions sep arately, for ordinary soil is alterable, up to a certain point, even within the limits of a single summer; but there are condi tions which may not be changed within so short a space of time - conditions of shade sometimes, or moisture, or dryness - and there are some imposed by absolutely unalterable physical peculiarities. The garden design, as well as the selection of the plants, must, therefore, conform to these, for even annuals have their prefer ences, which are worth considering and conceding. Book The Ladies Flower Garden

Download or read book The Ladies Flower Garden written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ladies' Flower-Garden: Annuals Each work will be complete in itself, so that the proprietor of a small town-garden, who can grow only annuals or bulbs, need only purchase the volume, or volumes, containing the plants he feels inclined to cultivate: while the proprietor of a greenhouse, or of any kind of hothouse, by purchasing the volumes containing the plants for each, may see at one glance the most ornamental flowers suitable for his purpose, and obtain directions for their culture. Besides this, as each work will be arranged according to the natural system, the whole series will form a more comprehensive illustration of the kind of plants belonging to the different orders, than any other work which has yet been published; and it will therefore be very useful in giving young people general ideas of the arrangement of plants, and thus facilitating their study of botany. Book Hardy Perennials and Old Fashioned Garden Flowers

Download or read book Hardy Perennials and Old Fashioned Garden Flowers written by John Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Perennials and Old-Fashioned Garden Flowers: Describing the Most Desirable Plants Many gardens are very small, but these, if pro perly managed, have their advantages. The smaller the garden the more choice should be the collection, and the more highly should it be cultivated. I shall be glad if anything I say tends in this direction. From my notes of plants useful memoranda may be made, with the object of adding a few of the freest bloomers in each month, thus avoiding the error often committed of growing such subjects as mostly flower at one time, after which the garden has a forlorn appearance. The plants should not be blamed for this; the selection is at fault. No amount of time and care can make a garden what it should be if untidy and weedy plants prevail. On the other hand, the most beautiful species, both as regards foliage and flowers, can be just as easily cultivated. The object of this small work is to furnish the names and descriptions of really useful and reliable Hardy and Perennial Plants, suitable for all kinds of flower gardens, together with definite cultural hints on each plant. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perennials, or Old Fashioned Hardy Garden Flowers, 1924 Catalogue There is no question -in the mind of any one who has a thorough knowledge of nursery stock and its demand among home owners, that a larger number of plants such as are illustrated in this book, can be sold in a given territory than any other class of stock. The orders will not run into money like shrubs, roses or trees, as they are less expensive, but dozens and hundreds can be sold where singles and half-dozens are disposed of in other classes of stock. There is hardly a home in this country where it is not possible to interest the owner in some of these Hardy Perennial Plants as they are a con stant source of joy in the summer months. Study the descriptions so that you know what you are selling, and you will have no trouble in showing any householder where it would be desirable to plant some of this stock. In the back of the book you will find Cannas, Dahlias' and Gladioli, which should be sold only for spring shipment. Remember we do not wish any orders for this class of stock for fall shipment. You can, however, sell them all the year around as long as you take them on spring blanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ladie's Flower-Garden: Perennials Tan plants I propose to treat of in the present work are principally those which remain several years in the ground without requiring to be taken up and replanted; owering every summer, and generally dying down to the ground in winter, but when they do so, springing up again from the root in spring. These plants are seldom raised from seed, and when they are, they do not ower till the second or third year; but they are generally propagated by dividing the roots either in autumn, when the plants have done owering and are in a state of repose, or in spring, just before the young shoots begin to grow. The latter is the most general period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Colour in the Flower Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book Colour in the Flower Garden Classic Reprint written by Gertrude Jekyll and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colour in the Flower Garden I am strongly of opinion that the possession of a quantity of plants, however good the plants may be themselves and however ample their number, does not make a garden it only makes a collection. Having got the plants, the great thing is to use them with careful selection and definite intention. Merely having them, or having them planted unassorted in garden. Spaces, is only like having a box of paints from the best colourman, or, to go one step further, it is like having portions of these paints set out upon a palette. This does not constitute a picture; and it seems to me that the duty we owe to our gardens and to our own bettering in our gardens is so to use the plants that they shall form beautiful pictures; and that, while delighting our eyes, they should be always training those eyes to a more exalted criticism to a state of mind and artistic conscience that will not tolerate bad or careless combination or any sort of misuse of plants, but in which it becomes a point of honour to be always striving for the best. It is just in the way it is done that lies the whole difference between commonplace gardening and gar dening that may rightly claim to rank as a fine art. Given the same space of ground and the same material, they may either be fashioned into a dream of beauty, a place of perfect rest and refreshment of mind and body - a series of soul-satisfying pictures - a treasure of well-set jewels; or they may be so misused that everything is jarring and displeasing. To learn how to perceive the difference and how to do right is to apprehend gardening as a fine art. In practice it is to place every plant or group of plants with such thoughtful care and definite intention that they shall form apart of a harmonious whole, and that successive portions, or in some cases even single details, shall show a series of pictures. It is so to regulate the trees and undergrowth of the wood that their lines and masses come into beautiful form and harmonious proportion; it is to be always watching, noting and doing, and putting oneself meanwhile into closest acquaintance and sympathy with the growing things.
