Book excerpt: The evolving character of architectural practice, the changing media used for its production and dissemination and the resulting challenges in organizational and creative processes in architecture are the starting point for this research project. The dissertation discusses the role of high-end visualization in architectural competitions, with a focus on the involvement of visualization specialists and the connected cooperation process between them and the designing architects. The research on these issues places the developments in recent years of digital media and in particular of visualizations within the wider context of architectural practice. Employing different methods, four main gaps within practice as well as between practice and the public are located. These gaps help describe the dynamic of the situation and suggest a direction for improvement. The dissertation illustrates an aspect of increasing specialization in architecture and its effect on creative and organizational processes. It further discusses the meaning of ever more advanced production and dissemination techniques for the representation of architecture and its communication with people within as well as outside the architectural process. Results of the research indicate an ongoing distancing of architectural practice from visualizations as tools for design as well as communication. It further gives suggestions on how to respond to the new challenges due to this ongoing specialization.

It also presents a short history of the design of smart vision sensors, and points out some of the fundamental issues in the design of such sensors. 1. 1 A General Overview Machine vision is one of the main branches of artificial intelligence. The richness of information present in images makes them the first choice as an input to an artificial system which tries to interact with its environment. A large proportion of the brain of many advanced species is dedicated to visual information processing, which illustrates the importance of visual information in biological systems. Biological visual systems have evolved over millions of years, and each specie has developed a specialized visual system tailored for the essential tasks of survival, such as catching a prey, or escaping a predator. Implementing electronic hardware for image processing, therefore, may benefit from the underlying fundamental aspects of biological vision, though in no respect should this be regarded as a solid framework for electronic vision systems. Traditionally, computer vision algorithms are performed on images captured by conventional cameras, and processing is accomplished by means of general purpose digital computers. More advanced systems utilize dedicated hardware to speed up the processing stage.

The massive six-year effort has reconfigured arrival, circulation, and parking, developed new educational facilities, constructed a network of walks and trails, and established sustainable ecologies of prairie, savannah, riparian woods, and upland woods across the northern half of its property. This book uses landscape performance as an integral method of not only blending science into the design process but using scientific outputs as the rationale for design-decision-making. Through this, the book showcases a multitude of proven quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods which can be applied to other designs and plans, calculating their specific impacts on the HANC, and guiding readers through how to use each tool through an applied process. This book provides a comprehensive set of tools and approaches to measuring landscape performance that could be used as a guide for other projects to replicate or expand upon.
