Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century English game laws have long been synonymous with petty tyranny. By imposing a property qualification on sportsmen, they effectively denied all but country gentlemen the right to take game or even to possess a gun. Those who challenged the gentry's monopoly were fined or imprisoned, usually after only a summary hearing by the local justice of the peace. In the early nineteenth century, it was claimed that one out of every four inmates in England's prisons was an offender against the game laws. Bitterly denounced at the time, they have continued to be condemned by historians as arbitrary, savage and unjust. This book is the first full scholarly examination of the English game laws. Based on material drawn from over two dozen archives - including judicial records, estate correspondence and personal diaries - it attempts to explain what the laws actually were, why they were passed, how they were enforced and why they were eventually repealed. The picture which emerges from this investigation challenges the conventional wisdom about the game laws in a number of important respects.

Given the rise in international competition, the increasing complexity of video game features, and the explosive growth of the industry in general, game developers can quickly find themselves in serious trouble, becoming vulnerable to copyright infringement claims, piracy, and even security breaches. Not every video game company has the financial resources to retain in-house counsel–which Video Game Law seeks to address by discussing many of the common pitfalls, legal questions, and scenarios facing the industry. Book excerpt: "Many know the annoyance and ill effects of wet basements and cellars, but comparatively few are familiar with good remedial methods. This bulletin gives needed information ... Many wet cellars might be dry had a little more attention been given to their location and construction and to grading the earth around them to shed water quickly. Frequently wet cellars can be made dry by gravity drainage of the site -- the simplest and surest method of avoiding ground-water troubles. Many dam cellars can easily be made less damp by better window ventilation. Water-tight construction and waterproofing and damp-proofing methods require good materials, but the most important thing -- in fact the vital thing -- is thorough workmanship in each and every detail."--Page ii.

Book excerpt: "The twenty-fourth annual summary by the United States Department of Agriculture of federal and other game laws and regulations is here presented to aid in the administration of the migratory-bird treaty act and the Lacey legislation for the use of law-enforcement officials, sportsmen, conservationists, and others. It is published to the end that the laws for the protection of game and birds shall be properly observed. The dates here shown for open seasons on migratory birds are the result of Federal and State legislation, the Federal regulations operating in many cases to shorten the seasons fixed by State statute. It is only by observing these dates that hunters can avoid violating either Federal or Sate law. Provisions relating to methods of capture, game refuges enforcement of laws, disposition of fees and fines, and matters of minor importance are omitted. These may be found by reference to the laws themselves, pamphlet editions of which some are obtainable in most of the States from proper officials ... Provisions relating to seasons, licenses, limits, possession, sale, and export, and a few miscellaneous matters are set forth under State an d other governments, alphabetically arranged, thereby furnishing a brief convenient synopsis of the laws.'"-- p.[2]
