Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... PART II. One of the first things to notice is that only SEVEN OR EIGHT TRUMP CARDS are used for the most part in playing this game. Seven or eight stocks out of more than a hundred and thirty on the board contribute three-fourths of the transactions on the exchanges. You had better confine your attention to these and hold only these cards in your hand. These are the stocks that are manipulated by the big pools. If you will run your eye down the column of "numbers of shares sold" in the daily report, you will at once pick out the stocks that are handled by these pools. For the last five years Sugar has been the leading card on the board. Tobacco at times comes next, and St. Paul is a good third; Burlington and Rock Island come next. Manhattan, Chicago or Peoples' Gas and Union Pacific preferred. All of these constitute the principal pool cards to-day. Time was when Atchison and Reading and Lackawanna and Missouri Pacific and other favorites were used; but these have been discarded for the most part, and the list given above are the ones to-day. New cards may be taken up from time to time and old ones thrown aside, but take the year through only seven or eight cards are used as trumps, and ninetenths of the transactions will be in these particular stocks. Toward the end of the campaign, either on the bull or bear side, the outside stocks will be made use of more prominently. To succeed you must study the manipulation of the pool cards. Confine your transactions to these. POOL STOCKS AND SPECIALTIES. As we have said there are six or eight stocks handled by the big pools; the rest of the stocks may be called "specialties." Should one deal in the pool stocks or the "specialties?" At the beginning and during the first half of both the bull and...

Book excerpt: America’s fascination with the stock market dates back to the Gilded Age. Winner of the BAAS Book Prize of the British Association of American Studies Americans pay famously close attention to “the market,” obsessively watching trends, patterns, and swings and looking for clues in every fluctuation. In Reading the Market, Peter Knight explores the Gilded Age origins and development of this peculiar interest. He tracks the historic shift in market operations from local to national while examining how present-day ideas about the nature of markets are tied to past genres of financial representation. Drawing on the late nineteenth-century explosion of art, literature, and media, which sought to dramatize the workings of the stock market for a wide audience, Knight shows how ordinary Americans became both emotionally and financially invested in the market. He analyzes popular investment manuals, brokers’ newsletters, newspaper columns, magazine articles, illustrations, and cartoons. He also introduces readers to fiction featuring financial tricksters, which was characterized by themes of personal trust and insider information. The book reveals how the popular culture of the period shaped the very idea of the market as a self-regulating mechanism by making the impersonal abstractions of high finance personal and concrete. From the rise of ticker-tape technology to the development of conspiracy theories, Reading the Market argues that commentary on the Stock Exchange between 1870 and 1915 changed how Americans understood finance—and explains what our pervasive interest in Wall Street says about us now.

Book excerpt: As the new century dawned, Wall Street was a game and the stock market was fixed. Ordinary investors were fleeced by big institutions that manipulated the markets to their own advantage and they had no comeback. The Game in Wall Street shows the ways that the titans of rampant capitalism operated to make money from any source they could control. Their accumulated funds gave the titans enormous power over the market, and allowed them to ensure they won the game. Traders joining the game without knowing the rules are on a road to ruin. It's like gambling without knowing the rules, and with no idea of the odds. The Game in Wall Street sets out in detail exactly how this market manipulation works and shows how to ride the price movements and make a profit. And guess what? The rules of the game haven't changed since the book was first published in 1898. You can apply the same strategies in your own investing and avoid losing your shirt by gambling against the professionals. Illustrated with the very first stock charts ever published, the book contains a new preface and a conclusion by stock market guru Clem Chambers which put the text in the context of how Wall Street operates today.
