Book Using the Theory of Reasoned Action to Examine the Gambling Behaviors of College Athletes and Other Students

Download or read book Using the Theory of Reasoned Action to Examine the Gambling Behaviors of College Athletes and Other Students written by Robert Gene Thrasher and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose of the current study was to examine the gambling behavior of college students and, in particular, college student athletes. Specifically, this study examined the relationships among subjective norms, gambling attitudes, gambling motivations, locus of control, and gambling intentions on the gambling behavior of college students. The goal of this study was to assess gambling in a specific population with easy access to gambling and to evaluate the adequacy of a modified Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) for predicting gambling frequency and gambling behavior. Several studies have used the TRA to examine gambling behavior (Cummings & Corney, 1989; Moore & Ohtsuka, 1997,1999; Oh & Hsu, 2001). AN of these studies have found the TRA to be an effective instrument when examining gambling behavior. However, the researcher chose to modify the IRA in the current study by adding two moderating variables, intrinsic motivation and locus of control, to the conceptual model in order to provide a better conceptual model for future research. The results indicated the addition of the moderating variable in the IRA was appropriate. In the case of intrinsic motivation, both intrinsic motivation to know and intrinsic motivation to accomplish significantly moderated the relationship between gambling attitudes and gambling intentions, predicting 2% of the variance. The current study found that (1) there were differences in gambling attitudes between men and women, (2) attitudes and subjective norms predicted gambling intentions and (3) motivations and locus of control moderated the relationship between gambling attitudes and gambling intentions. These results should be useful to athletic departments and student affairs officers, who are developing strategies to deal with gambling problems on campuses. In addition, the results relative to the revised TRA should be helpful to future researchers in this area. Future research should focus on additional psychological traits such as sensation seeking, aptitude, self-esteem, impulsivity, boredom, venturesomeness, passion, chasing, coping or escape as moderating variables that may influence gambling behavior among student athletes and other students.

Book excerpt: The rise in legalized gambling in the United States over the last fifteen years has led to much debate among scientists and practitioners about how to conceptualize and study the phenomenon, treat persons who experience difficulties controlling their level of play, and prevent individuals from becoming problem or 'pathological' gamblers. The current volume brings together a group of basic and applied behavior scientists to discuss these matters. Gambling is designed to allow readers familiar with the general concepts and principles of behavior analysis to understand how the field is addressing the area of gambling. Graduate students taking classes in behavioral applications, or those enrolled in seminars specific to gambling, will find this collection of papers a vital resource. The book will also be useful to clinicians interested in understanding the basic and conceptual foundations that underlie successful prevention and treatment approaches.

  • Author : Deborah K. Phillips
  • Publisher : Peter Lang
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9781433105227
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Gambling and Gender written by Deborah K. Phillips and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two distinct strands in the literature on gambling: one that focuses on how to play and win the various games of chance and one that focuses on gambling compulsion and addiction. Gambling and Gender forges a new direction, studying gambling as more communication than compulsion, more recreation than deviance, more sociology than psychology. Within that framework it seeks to explore several aspects of gender: How do the gambling behaviors of men and women differ? How have women adapted to and/or changed the historically male dominance of the gambling arena? What gambling activities have women claimed as their own and used to develop uniquely female relationships? How have recent trends in technology and mass media changed the ways in which men and women claim - or reject - their gender identities? The authors use a variety of research strategies, including content analysis, survey research, interviews, and participative observation, to shed new light on this fascinating subject and to suggest ways to explore it further.

Book Gambling Behavior Among Club intramural recreational CIR College Student Athletes Attending Division II and Division III Universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Download or read book Gambling Behavior Among Club intramural recreational CIR College Student Athletes Attending Division II and Division III Universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania written by Robert M. Mehalik and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzed gambling behaviors among Club/Intramural/Recreational (CIR) athletes attending state and private universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania. More specifically, the researcher examined CIR student athlete’s gambling behavior and participation in gambling activities at Division II institutions, including mid-sized state/public colleges or universities, and Division III institutions, including small private colleges or universities. Using a Survey Research Design, this study identified significant group differences in gambling involvement, types of gambling students participate in, and gambling related issues/problems across CIR student athlete/nonathlete populations as well as across Division II and III institutions. This study fills a gap in academic literature pertaining to gambling behavior and CIR athletes. Additionally, this research study adds to the existing literature to help better understand gambling behaviors, problem gambling, and pathological gambling occurring with college students. The findings of this study have the ability to impact the way gambling prevention programs are presented and administered to college students and specific student populations.

Book Applying a Behavioral Economic Framework to the Gambling Behavior of College Students

Download or read book Applying a Behavioral Economic Framework to the Gambling Behavior of College Students written by Matthew Thomas Suda and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioral economic theory conceptualizes human behavior as the result of allocating behavioral resources to engage in preferred activities. This framework has been applied sparingly to gambling behavior. The present study sought to reveal the important behavioral economic construct of relative reinforcing value for the activity of gambling by manipulating the value of an alternative reinforcer as well as constraining it’s availability in a sample of college students, a population that consistently shows elevated rates of gambling as well as problematic gambling behaviors. Analyses did not support the hypotheses, as gambling’s reinforcing value was not demonstrated by the experimental manipulations. Implications and methodological limitations are discussed.

Book Predicting and Understanding College Students Gambling Intentions Using an Extended Model of the Theory of Planned Behavior

Download or read book Predicting and Understanding College Students Gambling Intentions Using an Extended Model of the Theory of Planned Behavior written by Hyung-Seok Lee and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overall, the extended models provided good fit to gambling intentions and served as a more sufficient model for mediating gambling media exposure. In sum, the results of this study support the utility of the TRA as a theoretical framework for predicting college students' gambling intention in casinos, as well as on online sites. All hypothesized models tested in the present study showed good model fits and substantially improved predicting powers of the TRA or the TPB by introducing direct paths between gambling media exposure and intention, prior casino gambling experience and intention, and gambling addiction and intention. Theoretical and practical implications of mass media exposure and gambling intentions are discussed, and future research directions are outlined.
