He was under such pressure to pay off the debts that he dictated to the book to a shorthand student in less than a month. The shorthand student became his second wife. The story is told in the first person; the narrator is Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor for the family of a Russian general. They are staying at a resort in Germany. Alexei is in love with the generals stepdaughter, Polina. After he swears his undying love for her, and offers to do anything she wishes, Polina asks him to go to a casino and place a bet for her. Unbeknownst to Alexei, Polina's stepfather is in dire financial straits. He finally agrees and ends up winning at the roulette table. This was Alexei's first experience with gambling.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Gambler (The Unabridged Hogarth Translation)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Gambler is a short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky about a young tutor in the employment of a formerly wealthy Russian general. The novella reflects Dostoyevsky's own addiction to roulette, which was in more ways than one the inspiration for the book: Dostoyevsky completed the novella under a strict deadline to pay off gambling debts. The Gambler is set in the casino of the fictional German spa town of Roulettenburg and follows the misfortunes of the young tutor Alexei Ivanovich. As he succumbs to the temptations of the roulette table, he finds himself engaged in a battle of wills with Polina, the woman he unrequitedly loves. With an unforgettable cast of fellow gamblers and figures from European high society, this darkly comic novel of greed and self-destruction reveals Dostoevsky at his satirical and psychological best. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky ( 1821 – 1881) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist and philosopher. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the context of the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest and most prominent psychologists in world literature.

Plot: The first-person narrative is told from the point of view of Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor working for a Russian family living in a suite at a German hotel. The patriarch of the family, The General, is indebted to the Frenchman de Criet and has mortgaged his property in Russia to pay only a small amount of his debt. Upon learning of the illness of his wealthy aunt, "Grandmother", he sends streams of telegrams to Moscow and awaits the news of her demise. His expected inheritance will pay his debts and gain Mademoiselle Blanche de Cominges's hand in marriage. Alexei is hopelessly in love with Polina, the General's stepdaughter, and swears an oath of servitude to her. He told her while on a walk on the Schlangenberg (a mountain in the German town) that all she had to do was give the word and he would gladly walk off the edge and plummet to his death. This leads to her asking him to go to the town's casino and place a bet for her. He refuses at first but, when goaded and reminded of his oath of undying love and servility, he succumbs and ends up winning at the roulette table. He returns to her the winnings but she will not tell him the reason she needs money. She only laughs in his face (as she does when he professes his love) and treats him with cold indifference, if not downright malice. He only learns the details of the General's and Polina's financial state later in the story through his long-time acquaintance, Mr. Astley. Astley is a shy Englishman who seems to share Alexei's fo

Book excerpt: "Travelling in the retinue of an impoverished Russian General, young teacher Alexei seeks solace in the dream of a life-changing win at the roulette table. As the general sinks deeper into debt and the long-awaited inheritance from his ailing grandmother fails to materialise, Alexei's frustrated financial and sentimental aspirations gain momentum. When Grandmama herself turns up at Roulettenburg and starts gambling away her family possessions with Alexei's assistance, all those who seek to gain from her death look on with ill-concealed horror. And as passion, hatred and unadulterated greed rise to the surface, Dostoevsky creates a darkly psychological novel of truly extraordinary vision." "Based on Dostoevsky's own troubled experiences at the gaming tables, The Gambler is a telling portrayal of a man crippled by the overwhelming powers of addiction and obsession." --Book Jacket.

She tells them all that she knows all about the General's debt and why the Frenchman and woman are waiting around the suite day after day. She leaves the party of death-profiteers by saying that none of them are getting any of her money. She then asks Alexei to be her guide around the town famous for its healing waters and infamous for its casino where the tables are stacked with piles of gold; she wants to gamble.
