Book Islamic Law in Africa

Download or read book Islamic Law in Africa written by J. N. D. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1955.In many parts of Africa three different systems of laws are concurrently applied - the imported "Colonial" law, the indigenous customary law and Islamic law. In some countries the customary and the Islamic law are kept separate and distinct, while in others they are fused into a single system. This volume represents a unique survey of the extent to which Islamic law is in fact applied in those parts of East and West Africa which were at one time under British administration. It examines the relevant legislation and case law, much of which has never appeared in any Law Reports; the judges and courts which apply it and the problems to which its application give rise.

Book Country Report The Gambia The Gambia s Investment Law Regime

Download or read book Country Report The Gambia The Gambia s Investment Law Regime written by Fadamos Singateh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Law - Miscellaneous, grade: 16, Saarland University (Europa Institut), course: Europäisches und Internationales Recht, language: English, abstract: The thesis aims at giving a country report of The Gambia, starting by presenting the country’s historical, cultural and legal background. Then its social, political and economic situation will be touched upon and the country’s FDI regime and investment law in general will be laid out. The areas in which FDI could be attracted, how this is done and could be improved will be discussed as well as the promotion and protection of investment, the expropriation and compensation and the dispute settlement of investment related matters. It will finally lay out the international and bilateral treaties the country has signed in the realm of investment, evaluate the different aspects and give recommendations for the future. In a globalized world international investment as well as investment treaties gain more importance. Investment laws have as their function investment promotion, sustainable development and legal certainty for domestic and foreign investors. Especially in less developed countries like The Gambia, which were held down mostly due to political reasons and mismanagement, it seems that a time to attract more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and develop a more competitive economy has come. The Gambian people elected a new president in 2017 and the former ‘Jammeh’ regime having lasted for 22 years came to an end. Thus, with the new government common practices like unlawful expropriation seized to exist and it even enacted a Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) to respond to the needs of victims under the former regime and to promote healing and reconciliation. It also introduced a vision and strategic plan to enhance the Gambia’s economy further, the National Development Plan (NDP). The NDP has been aiming at delivering good governance, social cohesion and a transformed economy for the wellbeing of all Gambians.

Book Historical Dictionary of The Gambia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of The Gambia written by David Perfect and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Gambia achieved its independence from Great Britain on 18 February 1965, as mainland Africa’s smallest state, its future seemed uncertain. It retained this status for nearly 30 years, An attempted coup d’état in July 1981 was put down, but, ironically, when other African states were returning to democratic government, Gambian democracy finally succumbed to a military coup on 22 July 1994. While civilian rule was restored in 1996, full democracy was not and a number of subsequent presidential and parliamentary elections have been far from free and fair, while The Gambia’s human rights record has been very poor since 1994. This fifth edition of Historical Dictionary of The Gambia contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about The Gambia.
