Book The Change makers

Download or read book The Change makers written by Jaime L. Hollis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 Presidential election was one that revolved around the promise of change. While one could argue every election is about change, in 2008 "change" took on real meaning. Obama's campaign message of change invigorated young voters, who supported Obama and his campaign in high numbers. But what does "change" really mean? Do the college students who supported Obama in 2010 feel the change they voted for has been delivered? This may be a determining factor whether this group shows up to support President Obama in 2012. This research attempts to better understand what motivates college students to vote, what issues college students feel are important, and whether college students feel that the change they voted for has been delivered by asking the following research questions: RQ1 -How did college students at Eastern Washington University define "change" when used by Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential campaign? RQ2 - Do College students at Eastern Washington University feel that President Obama delivered the change that they expected? RQ3 - What are the most important issues to college students at Eastern Washington University? RQ4- Do college students at Eastern Washington University who voted for Obama in the 2008 Presidential election have 'buyer's remorse?'"--Document

Book Is Voting for Young People

Download or read book Is Voting for Young People written by Martin P. Wattenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008, everyone expected young people to turn out to vote in record numbers for the first youthful, hip, new media-savvy, African American presidential candidate in history. They didn’t. When Obama ran for re-election, he targeted young voters and they still didn’t come to the polls in overwhelming numbers. What will happen in 2016, another potential history-making election? Is Voting for Young People? explores the reasons why young people are less likely to follow politics and vote in the United States (as well as in many other established democracies) no matter who the candidates are, whether they tweet or blog, or what the issues may be. This brief, accessible, and provocative book suggests ways of changing that, and now includes a new chapter on young people's role in the 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections, looking ahead to 2016. New to the Fourth Edition: A new introduction placing current youth voting trends in context with recent elections. A new Chapter 8 covering the elections of 2008, 2012, and 2014—looking ahead to 2016. Updated voting data on 2012 and 2014 elections. A new concluding chapter offering recommendations for improving young voter turnout.

Book Networked Information Technologies Elections and Politics

Download or read book Networked Information Technologies Elections and Politics written by Jongwoo Han and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jongwoo Han's Networked Information Technologies, Elections, and Politics: Korea and the United States is a study on the changes that have been occurring in elections, politics, and democratic movements in both the United States and Korea. There has undoubtedly been a paradigm shift in political discourse, as the industrial age mass media-based public sphere gives way to the new networked information technologies (NNIT)-based cyber sphere. Analyzing and comparing Korea's presidential election in 2002 and the United States' 2008 presidential election, Han discusses the impact of NNITs in electoral politics, as previously apolitical young generations have become more involved and transformed themselves into both a cohesive voting bloc and a formidable constituency. Han also addresses the role of NNITs in Korea's beef crisis and President Obama's legislation battle to reform the U.S. health care system, revealing unprecedented opportunities to observe this major change occurring in political systems during the so-called Information Age.

Download or read book Teaching Civic Engagement written by Forrest Clingerman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-04 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a new model focused on four core capacities-intellectual complexity, social location, empathetic accountability, and motivated action--Teaching Civic Engagement explores the significance of religious studies in fostering a vibrant, just, and democratic civic order. In the first section of the book, contributors detail this theoretical model and offer an initial application to the sources and methods that already define much teaching in the disciplines of religious studies and theology. A second section offers chapters focused on specific strategies for teaching civic engagement in religion classrooms, including traditional textual studies, reflective writing, community-based learning, field trips, media analysis, ethnographic methods, direct community engagement and a reflective practice of "ascetic withdrawal." The final section of the volume explores theoretical issues, including the delimitation of the "civic" as a category, connections between local and global in the civic project, the question of political advocacy in the classroom, and the role of normative commitments. Collectively these chapters illustrate the real possibility of connecting the scholarly study of religion with the societies in which we, our students, and our institutions exist. The contributing authors model new ways of engaging questions of civic belonging and social activism in the religion classroom, belying the stereotype of the ivory tower intellectual.
