Excerpt: ...and downcast when He cannot make Himself heard in their hearts. For you, the word, " I will come to you," was good, because God had already made room for it by His own voice, but it might have been a mere word, an empty sound to Jean just now. It will not always be so. God will draw nearer to him on the galley bench than ever He has been able to do before. The voice will speak within, ' and be received with joy there, though it could never make itself heard before, because the din and bustle of the world had drowned the " still small voice " in the soul.' G 'Mother, how is it you know so much?' exclaimed Marie wonderingly, after she had taken in something of the comfort of her foster-mother's words. 'I know very little, ma mignonne; how should I, for I have lived here all my life? But just because I have been quiet, perhaps, God has been able to speak to me through His written word and the "still small voice " that has come to me again and again.' 'Ah, that must be it!' said Marie, with a sigh. 'In the city we are all so busy--all trying to do so much. That was why I wanted to come here, and when I go home I should like to take Jacqueline with me. Will you spare her to me for a little while?' 'For a little while, yes, ma mignonne, if your father is willing, ' answered Madame Court. Marie rose from her sitting posture and went in search of her father at once. Her eyes still bore traces of recent tears, but she had regained her serenity of soul, and met her father's look of anxiety with a reassuring smile. 'Oh yes, I am better, ' she said, answering his mute question; 'and when I come home next week I want to bring Jacqueline with me.' 'Yes, yes, bring her, ' said Monsieur Morel, eager to gratify any wish that his...

Book A Tale Blazed Through Heaven

Download or read book A Tale Blazed Through Heaven written by Oliver James Noble Wood and published by Oxford Modern Languages & Lite. This book was released on 2014 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tale Blazed Through Heaven examines developments in the representation of the classical tale of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan in the literature and painting of the Golden Age of Spain (c.1526-1681). Anchored in close analysis of individual primary texts, the five chapters that comprise this study assess how poets and painters breathed new life into the tale inherited from Homer, Ovid, and others, examining some of the ways in which the story of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan was disguised, developed, expanded, mocked, combined with or played off against different subjects, or otherwise modified in order to pique the interest of successive generations of readers and viewers. Each chapter discusses what particular changes and shifts in emphasis reveal about the tale itself, specific renderings, the aims and intentions of individual poets and painters, and the wider context of the literary and visual culture of Early Modern Spain. Discussing a range of poems by both canonical (Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Gongora, Lope de Vega, etc.) and less well-known writers (Juan de la Cueva, Alonso de Castillo Solorzano, Salvador Jacinto Polo de Medina, etc.), and culminating in detailed examination of select mythological works by Philip IV's court painter, Diego Velazquez, this book sheds light on questions relating to aspects of classical reception in the Renaissance, the rise of specific poetic styles (epic, mock-epic, burlesque, etc.), the interplay between the sister arts of poetry and painting, and the continual process of imitation and invention that was one of the defining features of the Spanish Golden Age.

Book Beautiful Ruins

Download or read book Beautiful Ruins written by Jess Walter and published by Center Point. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, on a rocky patch of sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper looks out over the incandescent waters of the sea and spies a woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. He learns that she is an American starlet who is said to be dying. And the story begins again in the present when half a world away, an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio’s back lot searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier. What unfolds is a dazzling, yet deeply human, roller coaster of a novel, spanning fifty years and nearly as many lives including the starstruck Italian innkeeper and his long-lost love; the producer who once brought them together and his idealistic young assistant; the army veteran turned fledgling novelist and the rakish Richard Burton himself, whose appetites set the whole story in motion. Gloriously inventive and constantly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is a story of flawed yet fascinating people, navigating the rocky shores of their lives while clinging to their improbable dreams.

Book The Life of Marie D Agoult Alias Daniel Stern

Download or read book The Life of Marie D Agoult Alias Daniel Stern written by Phyllis Stock-Morton and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite strains in her personal life (she never gained legal custody of her children and was disinherited by her own family), she made her Paris salon a multilingual center of European artists, writers, and revolutionaries. Through them she partook in and wrote about the great events of her lifetime, including her authoritative account of France's 1848 revolution. History has not treated her well despite her stature in her own times because much of what we know of her has been written by partisans for Liszt or Sand. In this new biography, historian Phyllis Stock-Morton takes Marie d'Agoult out of the shadows of Liszt and Sand and allows her to be recognized in her own right."--BOOK JACKET.
