Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vienna Galleries: Giving a Brief History of the Public and Private Galleries of Vienna; With a Critical Description of the Paintings Therein Contained If this book should induce art lovers to visit Vienna and view its museums, my devout desire would be fulfilled; but also - which is of far greater importance - a distinct service would have been rendered to these art lovers. For the Vienna Galleries of paintings are, with the exception of the Hermitage Gallery in St. Petersburg, the least known of those in Europe; but it may be said without exaggeration that they are among the most important. They are especially rich in the works of masters not generally known to art lovers, but of equal rank and often higher merit than those whose names are more familiar. The wealth of these Galleries may be estimated when we consider that the Imperial Museum shows over twenty-six hundred paintings; the Academy Collection, twelve hundred; the Liechtenstein, over eight hundred; the Czernin, three hundred and fifty; the Harrach, almost four hundred; the Schonbrunn, one hundred and fifty; and the Lower Belvedere Gallery, one hundred, or about five thousand five hundred paintings in all. Book excerpt: An illustrated selection of highlights from The Albertina's world-renowned collection of prints, drawings and paintings, featuring works from Old Masters as well as modern artists. The largest of the Hapsburg residential palaces, The Albertina in Vienna provides a stunning home to one of the largest and most important print rooms in the world. Named after its founder, passionate art collector Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822), the priceless collection comprises 50,000 drawings and watercolours and some 900,000 prints ranging from the late Gothic period to contemporary art. Here visitors can see world-famous works by da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael as well as Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt and Cézanne. The modern collection contains a vibrant array of works from a diverse range of artists: from Schiele, Klimt, Picasso and Pollock to Warhol, Katz, Baselitz and Kiefer. An extraordinary treasure trove of visual knowledge, The Albertina has also been gathering photographs since the mid-19th century, and holds around 50,000 plans, sketches and models in its Architecture Collection. This small volume showcases the highlights from this vast collection, as chosen by its Director. Follow @AlbertinaMuseum on Twitter (7350 followers).

Book excerpt: During the great flourishing of modern art in fin-de-siècle Vienna, artists of that city focused on images of individuals. Their portraits depict artists, patrons, families, friends, intellectual allies, and society celebrities from the upwardly mobile middle classes. Viewed as a whole, the images allow us to reconstruct the subjects' shifting identities as the Austro-Hungarian Empire underwent dramatic political changes, from the 1867 Ausgleich (Compromise) to the end of the First World War. This is viewed as a time when the avant-garde overthrew the academy, yet Facing the Modern tells a more complex story, through thoughtprovoking texts by leading art historians. Their writings examine paintings by innovative artists such as Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele alongside those of their predecessors, blurring the conventionally-held distinctions between 19th-century and early 20th-century art. Exhibition: The National Gallery, London, UK (09.10.13.-12.01.14.).--
