Book Price Discovery and Spill Over Impact in The Indian Commodity Futures Market

Download or read book Price Discovery and Spill Over Impact in The Indian Commodity Futures Market written by Chinmaya Behera and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Price discovery and risk management are two major important economic functions of futures market. Price discovery gives competitive reference (futures) price from which spot price can be derived. The study examines price discovery and spill-over impact in the Indian futures market using metal and energy futures. Sample data consist of daily futures and spot closing price from 1st June, 2005 to 29th January 2016 for gold, silver and copper. Using cointegration and error correction mechanism, the study finds the fair price discovery in the futures market. The study also finds that price discovery takes place first in the futures market then transgresses to spot market. Ratio of standard deviation is used to check the market efficiency in the futures market and it is found that gold market is not efficient as it fails to incorporate all the information available in the market. Using BEKK model volatility spill-over impact is observed to be statistically significant in all the commodity spot and futures returns. Bidirectional shocks transmission can be observed across the commodities like gold, silver and copper which means shocks in the futures market do have impact on spot market volatility for gold, silver and copper.

Book Testing Efficiency of the Copper Futures Market

Download or read book Testing Efficiency of the Copper Futures Market written by Dimitris Kenourgios and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the joint hypothesis of market efficiency and unbiasedness of futures prices for the copper futures contract traded on the London Metal Exchange. This contract is of particular importance given the usage and properties of the underlying commodity and its highest share of trading during the last decade, in an exchange which is the centre of the world's trading in copper. The data contain prices from two different copper futures contracts (three and fifteen months maturity) covering the decade of 1990s, a very volatile and turbulent period for the copper market worldwide. Unlike previous studies, it tests for both long-run and short-run efficiency using cointegration and error correction model. Our results show that the market is not efficient and do not provide unbiased estimates of future copper spot prices, which has important implications for the users of this market.

Book excerpt: The World Scientific Handbook of Futures Markets serves as a definitive source for comprehensive and accessible information in futures markets. The emphasis is on the unique characteristics of futures markets that make them worthy of a special volume. In our judgment, futures markets are currently undergoing remarkable changes as trading is shifting from open outcry to electronic and as the traditional functions of hedging and speculation are extended to include futures as an alternative investment vehicle in traditional portfolios. The unique feature of this volume is the selection of five classic papers that lay the foundations of the futures markets and the invitation to the leading academics who do work in the area to write critical surveys in a dozen important topics.

Book Modeling and Forecasting Primary Commodity Prices

Download or read book Modeling and Forecasting Primary Commodity Prices written by Walter C. Labys and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent economic growth in China and other Asian countries has led to increased commodity demand which has caused price rises and accompanying price fluctuations not only for crude oil but also for the many other raw materials. Such trends mean that world commodity markets are once again under intense scrutiny. This book provides new insights into the modeling and forecasting of primary commodity prices by featuring comprehensive applications of the most recent methods of statistical time series analysis. The latter utilize econometric methods concerned with structural breaks, unobserved components, chaotic discovery, long memory, heteroskedasticity, wavelet estimation and fractional integration. Relevant tests employed include neural networks, correlation dimensions, Lyapunov exponents, fractional integration and rescaled range. The price forecasting involves structural time series trend plus cycle and cyclical trend models. Practical applications focus on the price behaviour of more than twenty international commodity markets.

Book Financial Pricing Models in Continuous Time and Kalman Filtering

Download or read book Financial Pricing Models in Continuous Time and Kalman Filtering written by B.Philipp Kellerhals and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straight after its invention in the early sixties, the Kalman filter approach became part of the astronautical guidance system of the Apollo project and therefore received immediate acceptance in the field of electrical engineer ing. This sounds similar to the well known success story of the Black-Scholes model in finance, which has been implemented by the Chicago Board of Op tions Exchange (CBOE) within a few month after its publication in 1973. Recently, the Kalman filter approach has been discovered as a comfortable estimation tool in continuous time finance, bringing together seemingly un related methods from different fields. Dr. B. Philipp Kellerhals contributes to this topic in several respects. Specialized versions of the Kalman filter are developed and implemented for three different continuous time pricing models: A pricing model for closed-end funds, taking advantage from the fact, that the net asset value is observable, a term structure model, where the market price of risk itself is a stochastic variable, and a model for electricity forwards, where the volatility of the price process is stochastic. Beside the fact that these three models can be treated independently, the book as a whole gives the interested reader a comprehensive account of the requirements and capabilities of the Kalman filter applied to finance models. While the first model uses a linear version of the filter, the second model using LIBOR and swap market data requires an extended Kalman filter. Finally, the third model leads to a non-linear transition equation of the filter algorithm.
