Book Future Role of Geopressured Resources in US Energy Policy

Download or read book Future Role of Geopressured Resources in US Energy Policy written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential contribution of future geopressured energy - especially methane - to the US and the world's needs is examined through several scenarios. Although such production may not become competitive, if it does the eventual producible reserves from the Gulf Coast region seem likely to fall between 100 and 10,000 quads. The world's potential from similar resources is not known but may well be 10 times as great. The contribution to the projected future demand for hydrocarbons is found to become substantial in most of the success scenarios. The potential impact on fuel imports and their future prices is discussed. Although technical uncertainties are far too great at present for accurate projections, this could change rapidly as field data becomes available from DOE's R and D program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitting the Wall examines the combination of two intractable energy problems of our age: the peaking of global oil production and the overloading of the atmosphere with greenhouse gases. Both emerge from the overconsumption of fossil fuels and solving one problem helps solve the other. The misinformation campaign about climate change is discussed as is the role that noncarbon energy solutions can play. There are nine major components in the proposed noncarbon strategy including energy efficiency and renewable energy. Economics and realistic restraints are considered and the total carbon reduction by 2030 is evaluated, and the results show that this strategy will reduce the carbon emission in the United States to be on track to an 80% reduction in 2050. The prospects for "clean" coal and "acceptable" nuclear are considered, and there is some hope that they would be used in an interim role. Although there are significant technical challenges to assembling these new energy systems, the primary difficulty lies in the political arena. A multigenerational strategy is needed to guide our actions over the next century. Garnering long-term multiadministration coherent policies to put the elements of any proposed strategy in place, is a relatively rare occurrence in the United States. More common is the reversal of one policy by the next administration with counterproductive results. A framework for politically stable action is developed using the framework of "energy tribes" where all the disparate voices in the energy debate are included and considered in a "messy process." This book provides hope that our descendants in the next century will live in a world that would be familiar to us. This can only be achieved if the United States plays an active leadership role in maintaining climatic balance. Book Global Impact of Unconventional Energy Resources

Download or read book Global Impact of Unconventional Energy Resources written by Manochehr Dorraj and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume represent the latest thinking on the development and exploration of unconventional energy resources in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, Russia, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Latin America, and Africa and shed light on its potential and future prospects in these respective regions. The diversity of thinking about the “shale revolution” is also evident in our case studies. Throughout many countries in Europe for example, there is a strong preference for investment in renewable sources of energy over the fossil fuels. In addition to environmental concerns, the falling price of renewables, have also made them more attractive financially. Consequently, global investment in renewables is outpacing that of fossil fuel two to one. Watching this trend, in 2017, the Chinese government has pledged to invest $360 billion on renewable energy. This would make China the largest investor in development of renewables in the world. Other obstacles to development of shale oil and gas in other parts of the world include, lack of adequate shale resources (Africa), the abundance of conventional energy resources (Middle East and North Africa), high cost of production (Russia, China, Japan) and political opposition to hydraulic fracturing (France and Poland). Despite these sentiments the economic imperatives (providing employment) also play a significant role in determining the future prospects for unconventional energy resources globally.

  • Author : Scott L. Montgomery

Download or read book The Powers That Be written by Scott L. Montgomery and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, our global energy landscape did not look remarkably different from what it does today. Three or four decades from now, it certainly will: dwindling oil reserves will clash with skyrocketing demand, as developing nations around the world lead their citizens into the modern energy economy, and all the while, the grave threat of catastrophic climate change looms ever larger. Energy worries are at an all-time high—just how will we power our future? With The Powers That Be, Scott L. Montgomery cuts through the hype, alarmism, and confusion to give us a straightforward, informed account of where we are now, and a map of where we’re going. Starting with the inescapable fact of our current dependence on fossil fuels—which supply 80% of all our energy needs today—Montgomery clearly and carefully lays out the many alternative energy options available, ranging from the familiar, like water and solar, to such nascent but promising sources as hydrogen and geothermal power. What is crucial, Montgomery explains, is understanding that our future will depend not on some single, wondrous breakthrough; instead, we should focus on developing a more diverse, adaptable energy future, one that draws on a variety of sources—and is thus less vulnerable to disruption or failure. An admirably evenhanded and always realistic guide, Montgomery enables readers to understand the implications of energy funding, research, and politics at a global scale. At the same time, he doesn’t neglect the ultimate connection between those decisions and the average citizen flipping a light switch or sliding behind the wheel of a car, making The Powers That Be indispensible for our ever-more energy conscious age.

Book U S Geothermal Energy Program Five Year Research Plan 1986 1990 Draft of July 1986

Download or read book U S Geothermal Energy Program Five Year Research Plan 1986 1990 Draft of July 1986 written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is the US Department of Energy FY 1986-FY 1990 Five-Year Research Plan for geothermal energy technologies. The Plan is intended to provide Federal and industry decision-makers an overview of the current status of geothermal resource recovery and conversion technology and of DOE research to improve these technologies. The Plan is formulated within the policy principles of the National Energy Policy Plan (NEPP-V) to promote a balanced and mixed energy supply system and to maximize the practical reliance on the free decisions of the entire populace while maintaining public health, safety, and environmental quality. The objectives of the DOE geothermal R and D program have been integrated with the objectives of the DOE R and D programs for other forms of renewable energy. This integration is documented in the DOE report, ''Renewable Energy Research and Development Outlook'', February 1985, and is described in this Plan. The Geothermal Energy Research Program that is guided by this Plan consists of R and D activities whose objectives address a balance among short-term and long-term goals. The short-term goal is to achieve significant improvements in technical performance through research on second-generation technologies to extract and convert geothermal energy from liquid-dominated hydrothermal reservoirs. These improvements are expected to increase markedly the number of US hydrothermal reservoirs from which industry can produce energy in the near term. The longer-term goal is to determine whether geopressured energy, hot dry rock, and magma are viable future energy sources and to provide a base for industry evaluation of the economics of producing and utilizing these forms of energy. Taken together, these four types of geothermal energy sources and the scientific and technical improvements, sought by the Program offer significant potential to contribute to the Nation's economic and energy security goals.

Book Refocused Energy Policy

Download or read book Refocused Energy Policy written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present adminstration's policy on energy development is briefly summarized. While the Department of Energy will be dismantled, several important functions will be preserved and will continue elsewhere in government. The administration's aim is not to present an energy blueprint to predetermine energy solutions, rather, policy is based on the belief that the marketplace must be allowed to determine the most economic and durable energy sources. Revision of the federal leasing policy is discussed. Free market pricing of oil and gas is another key aspect of the new energy policy. The development of advanced technology in the areas of natural gas recovery, methane from coalbed, development of tight sands deposits, geopressured aquifers, and coal gasification is also discussed.
