Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book provides a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative assessment of Jamaica’s ties to the International Monetary Fund, focusing on Jamaica’s historical relationship with the IMF and reflecting on the domestic and international discourse surrounding the evolution of this relationship. Notably, this volume presents a critical analysis of Jamaica’s first engagement with and departure from the IMF and interrogates the political economy of the period. Jamaica’s economic experiences are assessed in the context of major global events, including the food price crises of 2007 and the global economic crises of 2008 and 2009. This book also looks at policy implications, and its well-researched analysis will be of great value to practitioners and policymakers as well as academics.

Book Envisioning Caribbean Futures

Download or read book Envisioning Caribbean Futures written by Brian Meeks and published by University of the West Indies Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing critical analysis of Caribbean intellectual thought and of the postcolonial political economy, Brian Meeks sets about proposing a manifesto for the future. What emerges is a programme for the medium term, which is pragmatic in its efforts to deal with the current crisis without engaging in the romanticism of an all-encompassing revolutionary transformation. Meeks suggests a form of participatory reorganization without, necessarily, dismantling the fundamentals of formal democratic organization. Particular emphasis is placed on rural agro-producers because their empowerment, politically and economically, resolves the problem of elite domination while creating the conditions for economic democracy. He argues, finally, that the proposals can become the basis for a more fundamental social and intellectual transformation from, following Sylvia Wynter, "man" to "human," based on democracy, community and solidarity

As the government looks to reinvigorate its growth and debt reduction strategy, it is instructive to examine how exogenous shocks and other unanticipated developments can affect economic outcomes. First, it examines the impact on Jamaica's economy of external economic slowdowns and credit crunches. Second, it develops a framework to assess the probabilities of successfully reducing debt below pre-specified thresholds. Furthermore, the relationships that existed in the past may not hold in the future.

Book Class State and Democracy in Jamaica

Download or read book Class State and Democracy in Jamaica written by Carl Stone and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1986-03-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. WINTER, THE UNWELCOME VISITOR is a five-section poetic cycle amending the ordinary with the extraordinary. The work shows versatility in style and form and yet maintains poetic excellence: a careful balance of metaphor, imagery and thought. Always experimental, there is no one style that characterizes the book. From brief and academic, to wordy and effusive, the style shifts according to the subject. Unstintingly political, unforgivingly critical of commonly held ideas about the relationship of humans to the natural world and to each other, the relevance of this work to both a Canadian and an international audience is undeniable.

Book The Political Economy of Caribbean Development

Download or read book The Political Economy of Caribbean Development written by M. Bishop and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the global political economy have rarely engaged with development in the Caribbean, the thought of its indigenous intellectuals, or the non-sovereign territories of the region. Matthew Bishop compares the development of the independent English-speaking islands of St Lucia and St Vincent and their non-sovereign French neighbours, Martinique and Guadeloupe. By explaining how distinctive patterns of British and French colonialism and decolonisation came to bear on them, he investigates how very different patterns of development have subsequently ensued, often with startling consequences in this era of globalization and crisis. By engaging with the empirical reality of the Caribbean, his study sheds light on a range of wider debates relating to development, indigenous thought, post-colonial sovereignty, small states, and the contemporary evolution of the global political economy.
