Book The Future of American Banking

Download or read book The Future of American Banking written by James R. Barth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of American banking is in doubt and the industry and the federal insurance fund that helps support it are in turmoil. The ingredients of the turmoil have been simmering in public view since at least the early 1980s when commercial bank loans to lesser developed countries (LDCs) began to default. The difficulties began to boil at the end of the decade when the prospect first arose that the banks' deposit insurer, the Bank Insurance Fund (BIF) that is administered by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), might require dollars to resolve bank failure as occurred in the savings and loan debacle. This book frames the major economic and policy issues raised by the banking crisis whose resolution largely determines the future of American banking. It focuses on the current reported condition of the banking industry, concentrating on large banks in particular. A longer-run economic prognosis for the banking industry is presented and the implications of future bank failures for the financial services sector and federal regulatory policy are discussed. Most importantly the book contains suggestions for changes in the nation's deposit-insurance system and accompanying banking laws. These changes would reduce the federal government's deposit insurance liability and would provide banks with potentially profitable opportunities. The study includes a wealth of data on the financial condition of American banks and the system as a whole, some of it not easily obtainable from any other source. The authors are internationally recognized as knowledgeable experts on the state of the American banking system and the options and prospects for US banking reform.

Book Creating the Future with All Finance and Financial Conglomerates

Download or read book Creating the Future with All Finance and Financial Conglomerates written by L. van den Berghe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating the Future with All Finance and Financial Conglomerates comprises an academic search for an understanding of all finance and financial conglomerates. It presents a strategic and economic analysis of diversification strategies and the growing interface between different types of financial firms. On the basis of a solid analysis of theoretical foundations and practical value, the book develops basic concepts of creating the future: especially solutions in managing risks and fresh ideas for the development of integrated financial services. The structure of the book is logical: starting on theoretical foundations (section 1, part A) and examining the economic value of All Finance and Financial Conglomerates (part B), leads to creating a concept for the future (part C). Case studies add additional practical value to this research. The review of the subject is completed by aspects of risk management in this sector and by political guidelines for the EU single market (section 2). The book builds further on Professor Van den Berghe's first publication, entitled Financial Conglomerates - New Rules for New Players (published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in October 1995) and broadens the scope in the direction of strategic and managerial aspects. The following five aspects underline the innovativeness of the material: The volume is not only focused on the diversification of banks via `bancassurance', but also analyses in depth the parallel developments in the insurance market, whereby insurers and insurance intermediaries launch themselves in the direction of `assurfinance'; The material analyses not only the cross-selling of each other's products and the blurring of the market boundaries, but also the diversification, collaboration, and integration on all other levels and functions; New conceptual tools (the financial conglomerates control board) are developed to provide a more in-depth comparison of the many cases of this international trend; The book goes far beyond the categorisation of the mode of diversification, by looking at all managerial aspects of such a growth strategy; and The work looks at the economic and legal aspects involved as well as at the more strategic and managerial aspects. This research has been made possible thanks to the financial support of The LEVOB Foundation.

Book The Future of Banking in America Community Banks

Download or read book The Future of Banking in America Community Banks written by Tim Critchfield and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article first explores some of the more significant characteristics of community banking, examining the importance of community banks in small-business lending in terms of their ability to handle quot;softquot; data, their tendency to rely on retail deposits for funding, and their emphasis on personal service. The tremendous consolidation that community banks have experienced has already been mentioned, and the second section of the paper investigates the decline in community bank numbers from 1985 to 2003, analyzing both the nature (failures, mergers, and new banks) and the geographic distribution of the decline. Was consolidation more pronounced in formerly unit-bank states than in other areas? How did consolidation differ between large metropolitan, small metropolitan, and rural areas and between growing and declining markets? This section also examines changes in the presence and the importance of community banking in different types of local deposit markets. Having examined changes in community bank presence, we turn our focus to these banks' balance sheets, business lines, and performance. Where has community banks' share as lenders suffered, and where have these banks held their own? Have the characteristics of community bank funding changed? How have community banks performed, both compared with larger banks and within their own ranks? How has community bank performance been affected by growth in the markets in which community banks are present? The article ends with some discussion of the prospects for community banks in light of their competitive strengths and the challenges facing them.

Book Restitution Past Present and Future

Download or read book Restitution Past Present and Future written by William Cornish and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1998-07-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume are dedicated to Gareth Jones, the retiring Downing Professor of English Law at the University of Cambridge. His contribution to legal scholarship has been immense, particularly in the fields of legal history, the law of trusts, charities law and, most famously, the law of restitution. The publication of the first edition of the Law of Restitution, which he co-authored with Lord Goff, stimulated a renaissance in the study of a subject which had previously lain dormant. The effect of its publication on English legal scholarship has been profound and enduring. In these essays, written by a group of the world's leading restitution scholars, the opportunity is taken to conduct a fresh appraisal of the development of the subject - to look, in other words, at the past, present, and future of the law of restitution. Contributors: John Baker, Peter Birks, Justice Finn, Roy Goode, Ewan McKendrick, Justice McLachlin, Sir Peter Millett, Lord Nicholls of Birkenhead, Richard Nolan, Janet O'Sullivan, Graham Virgo (as well as shorter contributions from invited commentators).

Book Sustainable Finance and Banking

Download or read book Sustainable Finance and Banking written by Marcel Jeucken and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banking and finance play a fundamental role in public policy and economic performance as well as in all forms of commerce and industry. They are crucial in determining whether society - from governments to individual consumers - succeeds in following an environmentally sustainable path. However, those working in the financial sector are largely unaware of the rationale and pressures for sustainable development and its bearing on their work, while those in the relevant research and policy areas commonly overlook how vital the financial sector is for progress. Marcel Jeucken sets out to rectify this state of affairs, in a style which is accessible to those with no experience of environmental finance issues. He provides a comprehensive account of their interdependence: why the financial sector is crucial to achieving sustainability and why the triple bottom line of commercial, environmental and social success points the way forward for banking. From a systematic assessment of major banks around the world, he presents a comprehensive account of current best practice, an analysis of the differences in approach and performance, and recommendations of actions and policies for improved performance that will contribute to sustainable development.
