Book Digital Interactive TV and Metadata

Download or read book Digital Interactive TV and Metadata written by Arthur Lugmayr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have brought many changes to the world of mass media. The In ternet and mobile communications technology have provided consumers with interactive digital services. Television is catching up with this trend through the digitalization process. Digital television is a hybrid platform combining elements from classical analog television and the Internet, providing modern multimedia services on a familiar platform. In short, digital TV is a gateway to the world of interactive digital media. Digital TV brings consumers into the television service arena and offers them new degrees of freedom. However, as the service and multimedia content types diversify and the services and their content increase, television is facing many of the same challenges of complexity and information overflow faced by other digital media. Metadata can handle the diverse services and content of digital TV effi. ciently and in a consumer-friendly way. Metadata means that the data are accompanied by other data which describe them. As data about data, meta data can provide an insight into syntactically and semantically complex data by distilling their essence to a set of simple descriptors. Metadata also helps to structure and manage information in diverse settings. The use of metadata in broadcast multimedia should not be restricted to being merely a tool for coping with the challenges of a complex networked multimedia environment. Instead, metadata ofTers new opportunities for the development of innovative services.

Book Interactive Television

Download or read book Interactive Television written by Jens F. Jensen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television is one of the most successful technological consumer products ever produced. It has spread to virtually every household in Western society and for many TV has become their most important source of information and entertainment. TV, however, is not a static medium - neither as a technology nor as a service. Game consoles, VCR's, cable and satellite systems have already begun to change the image of what TV is and what it can be. In the years ahead, television faces even more radical changes and developments. Terms liker interactivity digitization, convergence, networked multimedia, the information super highway, integrated full service networks, content-on-demand, two-way cables, direct broadcast satellites, datacasting etc. point out some of the aspects involved in this process of change. Briefly, what is at stake is the delivery of interactive, digital, multimedia service to the home. The anthology describes and discusses various aspects of this transition. In this context, the phrase television of the future covers the entire spectrum of new multimedia content and services - from traditional TV sets to multimedia personal computers; from network computers to game consoles; and from terrestrial broadcasting, cable systems, to satellite TV.

Book Interactive TV in the UK

Download or read book Interactive TV in the UK written by Barbara Katz and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Interactive Television (iTV) has been around for several decades. Most people have probably heard the term before. Having started in the USA with some trials it is now conquering the UK. The first interactive services on Digital TV (DTV) have been broadcasted 18 months ago and are continuously growing in number. The four platform providers Sky, NTL, ONdigital and Telewest are trying to make their interactive services as appealing as possible and are, of course, offering new advertising opportunities for advertisers on that new medium. The aims of this project are to analyse those new advertising opportunities and compare them to advertising on traditional TV and the Internet and find out whether advertising on iTV combines their strengths and overcomes some of their weaknesses. In order to achieve this, the literature review focuses on the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of advertising on traditional TV and the Internet and also provides a good overview over the iTV market in the UK and the current developments. The UK is leading the way in the development of iTV and is even supposed to be 12 to 18 months ahead of the USA. The market is highly competitive and fragmented with the four different platform providers offering three different forms of receiving DTV, of which satellite is leading in the numbers of subscribers. The predictions of the DTV uptake are very positive and the spendings for advertising on iTV are supposed to be tremendous within the next couple of years. The results of the interviews carried out with iTV experts from the platform providers, media and advertising agencies show that advertising on iTV indeed combines the strengths and overvomes some weaknesses and has the potential to be more successful than its two closest relatives. Due to the fact that it is still in its infancy and companies are just starting to test this new medium and no success stories have been published so far, advertising on iTV in its current form is not yet the killer application it was supposed to be and the uptake of T-commerce is quite questionnabel as well. It also becomes clear though that iTV does have a great potential and when the technology is creatively used to make ads more involving and engaging it will be big. Download or read book A Future Scenario of Interactive Television Information and Technology That Belongs to the Rich written by Dirk Schmelz and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1994 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: B+, University of Amsterdam, language: English, abstract: In the following l want to discuss the effects the interactive television technology might have on the ′Information society′ and which tasks have to be fulfilled to become a member of it. l want to focus on the question, what are the advantages to be a ′member′ of such a society and what advantages these technologies offer? My task is not to find a definite answer to these questions. They must be seen as speculative ones. All the new communication technologies like interactive television, are just at the beginning of its ′booming′ development and there is no empirical research done on it yet. However, want to take the interactive television technology as an example to discuss, what opportunities this new technology offers. Therefore, my work is primarily a theoretical approach to an issue that will become even more important if the new System will knock on the door of private households in Europe. l also want to discuss some ideas of Bertolt Brecht, who already in the 1920′s made suggestions for interactive broadcasting, which were primarily concerned about the radio system. But nevertheless his ideas are still applicable on any other communication system. His ideas of interactivity are more relevant than ever.1 The industry took on this argument for their own purposes. They Claim, that interactive television is absolutely necessary, because the Computer generation is raised with interactivity. Video games are one the best examples for interactivity. As well as the latest information l collected from newspapers, l will also use magazines and other media.
