Book Planning for Retail Development

Download or read book Planning for Retail Development written by Clifford Guy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading expert in the field, this is the first thorough critical review of retail planning policy in Britain (including Scotland and Wales). It covers recent changes in government policy and guidance, and examines retail policy within a broader economic and social context. Planning for Retail Development explains key events and debates in the evolution of retail planning policy, at central and local government levels, since the 1960s and draws contrasts between the 1980s, a period in which retail developers were encouraged by central government to expand away from town centres, and the more recent emphasis on protection and promotion of town centres as the most appropriate location for new development. The book develops a critical evaluation of past and present retail planning policies, based upon analyses of retailers’ objectives and of typical consumer shopping behaviour. Relationships between retail planning and wider societal concerns, including sustainable development, social inclusion and urban regeneration are also examined and analysed and guidelines for future policy objectives and content are drawn.

Book Retail and Commercial Planning RLE Retailing and Distribution

Download or read book Retail and Commercial Planning RLE Retailing and Distribution written by Ross Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in the philosophy of planning and the political influences behind it have led to an increasingly ambivalent approach to retail and commercial matters and a lack of clear goals and objectives as to what both central government and the local authorities should be concerned with. At the same time, changes within the distribution industry have brought new pressures to bear upon the environment which the conventional planning process seems ill-equipped to accommodate. This book, by an established leading authority, takes stock of the new problems to be confronted and provides the rudiments of an alternative planning approach to dealing with them. It begins by examining the growth of office blocks and shopping centres, and goes on to analyse and criticise the existing planning processes, suggesting alternative procedures. It looks at the dual needs of development on the one hand and renovation and redevelopment on the other and discusses how these should be dealt with in the future. More specific problems are also examined: the impact created by new shopping schemes, the decline of small shops and related activities, the conflict over transport demands and provisions and the special physical needs of particular urban and rural environments. Throughout, the argument is supported by detailed examples of particular developments. Originally published 1984.

Book excerpt: The economic, social and environmental implications of recent changes in retailing constitute significant contemporary issues, which are the focus of this timely book. Retail change deals with the internationalization of retailing, the development of shopping centres in the city and at suburban sites, and the growth of leisure shopping. It provides an up-to-date review of the central questions faced by undergraduate students in planning, business studies and geography. The retail environment of developed economies has undergone revolutionary change since the 1970s, and the process is far from over. In the book the major elements central to contemporary retail change are developed across the whole spectrum of spatial scales relevant to present-day society. The first part adopts an economic perspective and focuses on the process of business concentration and its increasingly international orientation. This is followed by analyses of change in the urban region, concentrating on the emergence of the great variety of new retail forms associated with retail decentralization. The planning implications of retail change are developed in the third part. The future of the city-centre and other traditional shopping centres is examined in the light of challenges presented by new facilities. Alternative future scenarios contingent upon laisser-faire or interventionist government policy controls are also discussed. The social implications of retail change are developed in the final section. All students and researchers concerned with the evolution and development of the retail sector of advanced economies will welcome this book as an authoritative source of contemporary findings and commentary. Rosemary D. Bromley and Colin J. Thomas are Lecturers in Geography at the University College of Swansea, Wales.. This book is intended for undergraduate students taking courses in economic geography and retailing in departments of geography, business studies, planning, etc.

According to Ministry of Commerce, the average growth rate of total retail sales has reached 16.3% from 2008-2013, ranking the second in the world in terms of the overall amount (People News, 2013). Driven by market forces to a larger extent, retail activities take places in CBDs, district centers, neighborhoods, etc., wherever exhibits business opportunities. So as to better manage and supervise the rapidly growing retail market, retail planning has been introduced in many Chinese cities by the local authority gradually. However, apart from the ambiguous macroscopic control on the overall quantity of retail development, the guidance on actual spatial distribution of retail facilities are relatively insufficient, which fails to maximize the overall utility to some degree. Besides, in many developed countries and cities such as UK and Hong Kong, retail market has been operated sophisticatedly under the guidance of the government. In this sense, a more comprehensive and specific retail control mechanism may be able to better cope with the problems that brought by the soaring retail developments in Chinese cities. Thus, retail planning systems in London and Hong Kong as well as related theories and retail models are worth investigating to derive the analytical framework for the whole study. As a fast-developing city, Shenzhen is always as a pioneer in institutional innovation. The study of Shenzhen may provide valuable experiences for other Chinese cities in near future. In order to be more specifically, the author has chosen Nanshan District, Shenzhen, which has embraced relatively advanced retail market in China, as the case for further detailed study. Primarily, an evaluation of current retail conditions of different hierarchies in terms of quality and quantity in Nanshan District is carried out through statistical review, site survey, questionnaire surveys, etc., and simultaneously the Hong Kong Expenditure-Based Retail Model is used. Through the assessment, it could be easily to find out that larger-scale shopping facilities are oversupplied while shopping spaces for neighborhoods are relatively insufficient, showing unbalanced spatial developments as well. Lastly, based on the previous research, potential retailing strategies in terms of quantity and quality as well as spatial development are derived to facilitate developments of different hierarchical retail facilities in the face of the future market trends and threats under online shopping, requiring cooperation between the government, consumers, developers and relevant stakeholders. Book Retail Location Planning in an Era of Multi Channel Growth

Download or read book Retail Location Planning in an Era of Multi Channel Growth written by Mark Birkin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way in which products and services are delivered to consumers, through branches and retail outlets, or more generally through a network of distribution channels, remains fundamentally important for maintaining a competitive advantage for a very wide range of businesses. This is true within domestic markets, but especially so for increasingly global corporations, as shareholder pressure for continued growth drives businesses into ever more widespread geographical markets. Arguing that more complex markets demand more sophisticated spatial analysis, this book discusses the application of location planning techniques to generate competitive advantage in a variety of business sectors in a changing retail environment. The series of techniques are analysed, from relatively straightforward branch scorecards to sophisticated applications of geographical information systems (GIS), spatial modelling and mathematical optimisation. Also explored are the changing dynamics of the impact of more restrictive planning environments in many countries on how retailers find new locations for growth and respond to changing consumer needs and wants. The book is essential reading for students and scholars alike working in geography, economics, business management, planning, finance and industry studies.
