In "Getting By," Donald M. Nonini draws on three decades of research in the region of Penang state in northern West Malaysia, mainly in the city of Bukit Mertajam, to provide an ethnographic and historical account of the cultural politics of class conflict and state formation among Malaysians of Chinese descent. Countering triumphalist accounts of the capitalist Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, Nonini shows that the Chinese of Penang (as elsewhere) are riven by deep class divisions and that class issues and identities are omnipresent in everyday life. Nor are the common features of "Chinese culture" in Malaysia manifestations of some unchanging cultural essence. Rather, his long immersion in the city shows, they are the results of an interaction between Chinese-Malaysian practices in daily life and the processes of state formation—in particular, the ways in which Kuala Lumpur has defined different categories of citizens. Nonini's ethnography is based on semistructured interviews; participant observation of events, informal gatherings, and meetings; a commercial census; intensive reading of Chinese-language and English-language newspapers; the study of local Chinese-language sources; contemporary government archives; and numerous exchanges with residents.

Given these circumstances, it does appear that Chinese capital in Malaysia has reasonable prospects for further growth in the immediate future. This study examines the dominant role of Chinese capital in the economy, providing in-depth empirical research on its mode of development and styles of operation. Covering the period from colonial times to the present day this study identifies key issues pertaining to Chinese business operations in Malaysia: ownership and control patterns, style of growth, relations with the state, politicians and other Chinese businessmen, and the manner of development of business abroad, whilst debunking the theory that large-scale Chinese capital is not very entrepreneurial in nature.

Book excerpt: "This dissertation is a qualitative study of the developing relationship between Malaysia and the People's Republic of China. The primary timeframe of this research occurs between 2008 and 2020. During this time Malaysia and China established closer relationships -- both from an economic and security perspective. Nevertheless, Malaysia adheres to a 'hedging' behavior, as it demonstrates neutrality and diplomatic behavior with respect to China. The study was conducted based upon broad research of the available, published digital literature. Both current academic and available regional news sources were interviewed for their expertise and knowledge. These conversations served to validate the written source research. During the primary timeframe of the study, Malaysia demonstrated hedging behavior toward China. As detailed in the first Case Study, China established a physical presence in Kuantan, Malaysia -- both at the Kuantan Port and the Malaysia China Kuantan Industrial Park. In the second Case Study, the East Coast Rail Link showed that China could provide the financing and technological expertise to provide the needed economic connectivity between the East and West Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. In the third Case Study, the corruption of PM Najib was revealed, and the accompanied Chinese domestic influence upon Malaysia disclosed. The impact of this research is to highlight China's influence upon Malaysian domestic politics as well as China's significant investments in Malaysia's economic future. Malaysia hedges in order to promote non-alignment with respect to the great powers present in the SE Asia region. Malaysia does not seek any military confrontation with China.
