The task set by the Steering Committee on Future Health Scenarios was twofold, encompassing issues relating both to mental health and to mental health care. Discussions of mental health normally narrow down immediately to a focus on its care; this study, in contrast, seeks to deal with mental health as a theme in its own right alongside that of mental health care. This task led to the establishment of a broadly based committee whose members possessed a wide range of knowledge and experience in the field. The study was carried out by an equally expert team from the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health. In the course of the study over a hundred people with wide ranging expertise took part in consultative panels.

Book excerpt: Lafayette O'Leary, to his acute discomfiture, has an exhilarating and terrifying tendency to slip continua. And what might that mean? It might mean finding oneself a gypsy with a ring in his ear at one moment, and then suddenly a crippled birdman unable to leave his nest because of the awkward loss of teleporting talent. It might mean battling one's way back to the time stream where he started - only to find himself already there, lording it over the populace like a tyrant.

Book The Judge and the Spectator

Download or read book The Judge and the Spectator written by Joke Johannetta Hermsen and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since early texts as "Thinking and Politics", Arendt had highlighted the contrast between philosophical and political thinking and compelled herself to find a satisfactory answer to the question: "how do philosophy and politics relate?". In her last work "Lectures on Kant's Political Philosophy" (1982), Arendt analyses the "political" dimensions of Kant's critical thinking. To think critically implies taking the viewpoints of others into account: one has to "enlarge" one's own mind by comparing our judgement with the possible judgements of others. While thinking remains a solitary activity, it does not cut itself off from all others. The essays in this book address the philosophical and moral questions raised by Arendt's attempt to draw out the political implications of "critical thinking" in Kant's sense. In one way or another, they all address the place of judgment in Arendt's thought. Arendt's turn to Kant and The Critique of Judgment was motivated by her desire to find a form of philosophizing that was not hostile to politics and the public realm. But did she really think that Kant's characterization of the judging spectator pointed the way out of the opposition between the universal and the particular, between looking at things sub specie aeternitatis and looking at things from a political point of view? To what extent did she think that Kant was successful in revealing a mode of thought oriented towards public persuasion, yet one which retained its critical independence? Each of the essays wrestles with the complexities of a complex thinker. They remind us that critical thinking or Selbstdenken is among the most difficult and rare arts, even though it is an art potentially accessible to everyone. They also remind us that Hannah Arendt was a virtuoso of this art, and of how her example points the way toward a renewal of judgment as the political faculty par excellence.

Download or read book The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education written by Douglas Proctor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internationalization of higher education is a world-wide phenomenon, subject to multiple interpretations at national, institutional and individual levels. Still, much of the mainstream literature on this topic is concentrated on a small number of countries and a narrow range of key topics. To address this gap, The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education offers a broader set of perspectives from outside the dominant English-speaking and Western European paradigms, while simultaneously focusing on dimensions of internationalization that are known to be under-researched. Additionally, the editors give primacy to next generation perspectives, not only to amplify our current understanding of key issues around the world, but also to shine a light on possible future agendas for this important aspect of contemporary higher education. The notions of new modes, new topics, and new contexts frame the analysis, providing new pathways for exploring and understanding distinct aspects of this crucially important phenomenon in higher education around the world. Key topics covered include: the current state of research and analysis on the internationalization of higher education aspects of internationalization and international activities which have not previously been explored or have limited current exposure how research into internationalization is conducted, showcasing innovative methodological practices a synthesis of common themes and differences in relation to the future agenda of topics, modes and contexts for internationalization an identification of key areas for future research A thoughtful guide for considering the many possible directions ahead for internationalization in higher education, The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education is essential reading for academic researchers and graduate students, as well as international education practitioners and leaders keen to make sense of evolving trends in this field.
