Book Universities in Transition

Download or read book Universities in Transition written by Heather Brook and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universities are social universes in their own right. They are the site of multiple, complex and diverse social relations, identities, communities, knowledges and practices. At the heart of this book are people enrolling at university for the first time and entering into the broad variety of social relations and contexts entailed in their ‘coming to know’ at, of and through university. For some time now the terms ‘transition to university’ and ‘first-year experience’ have been at the centre of discussion and discourse at, and about, Australian universities. For those university administrators, researchers and teachers involved, this focus has been framed by a number of interlinked factors ranging from social justice concerns to the hard economic realities confronting the contemporary corporatising university. In the midst of changing global economic conditions affecting the international student market, as well as shifting domestic politics surrounding university funding, the equation of dollars with student numbers has remained a constant, and has kept universities’ attention on the current ‘three Rs’ of higher education — recruitment, retention, reward — and, in particular, on the critical phase of students’ entry into the tertiary institution environment. By recasting ‘the transition to university’ as simultaneously and necessarily entailing a transition of university — indeed universities — and of their many and varied constitutive relations, structures and practices, the contributors to this book seek to reconceptualise the ‘first-year experience’ in terms of multiple and dynamic processes of dialogue and exchange amongst all participants. They interrogate taken-for-granted understandings of what ‘the university’ is, and consider what universities might yet become.

Book Seven Radical Ideas for the Future of Higher Education

Download or read book Seven Radical Ideas for the Future of Higher Education written by Claire Macken and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-07 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the disruption of the tertiary higher education system as a result of societal changes occasioned by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and hastened by COVID-19. It takes the view that higher education is on an inevitable trajectory of disruption as a result of globalisation, technological disruption, and disaggregation of the formal education sector but that it must not lose sight of its central role in equipping current and future students for the new economy. The book takes a student-centric - and big-picture approach - examining some of the biggest challenges facing massified higher education systems. The authors consider ways to achieve modern, responsive and efficient higher education systems globally that are economically sound for governments and affordable for individuals.

Download or read book A New Kid on the Block written by Alison Mackinnon and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-18 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of higher education in Australia at the end of the 1980s radically reshaped many existing universities. However, in South Australia, Dawkins's educational changes brought into existence an entirely new university, the University of South Australia, formed by the merging of two former institutions from the advanced education sector, the South Australian Institute of Technology and the South Australian College of Advanced Education. This volume first traces the unsuccessful path taken by those institutions to form partnerships with the two existing universities in South Australia. Having been rejected by Flinders and the University of Adelaide respectively the two former colleges joined forces and began life as a new university in a new system of higher education. Lacking research funding and access to higher degree students in its previous life, the new university nevertheless had considerable strengths which suited the new system, particularly in equity and links with business and the community. The story of the University of South Australia is one of the most successful of the Dawkins changes. After a shaky start its rapid rise to prominence in South Australia and beyond allows it to be truly seen as 'a new kid on the block' in Australian higher education.

Book Higher Education and the Future of Graduate Employability

Download or read book Higher Education and the Future of Graduate Employability written by Ruth Bridgstock and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the dominant ‘employability skills’ discourse by exploring socially connected and networked perspectives to learning and teaching in higher education. Both learning and career development happen naturally and optimally in ecologies, informal communities and partnerships. In the digital age, they are also highly networked. This book presents ten empirical case studies of educational practice that investigate the development of learner capabilities, teaching approaches, and institutional strategies in higher education, to foster lifelong graduate employability through social connectedness.

Book Universities the Citizen Scholar and the Future of Higher Education

Download or read book Universities the Citizen Scholar and the Future of Higher Education written by J. Arvanitakis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of higher education is in question as universities struggle to remain relevant to the present and future needs of society. The context in which learning occurs is rapidly changing and those engaged and interested in the place and position of university education need to figure out to adapt. This book embodies a vision for higher education where graduate attributes and proficiencies are at the core of the academic project, where degree programs move beyond disciplinary content and where students are encouraged to be Citizen Scholars. Through a series of cross-disciplinary and contextual cases, the contributors to this book articulate how this vision can be achieved in our pedagogical environments, future proofing higher education.

Book Transformation of the University

Download or read book Transformation of the University written by Søren S.E. Bengtsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformation of the University imagines preferable futures for the university, building hope for the institution’s necessary transformation. It transcends old criticisms and presents fresh ideas on how the institution might be conceived, organised and put into practice while safeguarding that which makes it a university – the pursuit of knowledge. This book is divided into three main parts: Part One – ‘Knowledge’ assumes the role of the university in generating knowledge for the benefit of society; Part Two – ‘Cultural Growth’ expands on how the university might contribute to and benefit from the cultural growth of society, with both explicit and implicit connections to social and epistemic (in)justice; and Part Three – ‘Institutions’ focuses on imaginative processes for enacting the university as an institution that meets the unforeseen future challenges facing societies around the world. With contributions from scholars across the world, Transformation of the University is an essential read for all academics, practitioners, institutional leaders and broad social thinkers who are concerned with the future of the university and its contributions to society.

  • ISBN : 0702258458
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Raising the Stakes written by Peter Coaldrake and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised new edition probes the state of Australian higher education and its future. Peter Coaldrake and Lawrence Stedman's seminal and comprehensive analysis of the challenges faced by the higher education sector has been updated with revisions and a new chapter that addresses current policy and proposed reforms. They argue that neither the market nor central government will be able to shape higher education in an optimal way. Facing greater competition and reduced prospects for public funding, universities themselves must provide the impetus and take responsibility for change as they adapt to complex and uncertain futures.
