Book excerpt: The President's FY 2003 Budget Request for the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction Account called for a National Research Council (NRC) review of the scientific merits of IceCube and other proposed U.S. neutrino projects in the context of current and proposed capabilities throughout the world. The NRC committee-the Neutrino Facilities Assessment Committee (NFAC)-was charged with providing scientific assessments of two possible future science initiatives: (1) IceCube, a very large volume detector of high-energy neutrinos proposed for the South Pole and (2) a possible deep underground science facility to be developed in the United States to pursue a broad range of fundamental questions in physics and astronomy. Fourteen persons were appointed to the committee, and the first meeting was held in June 2002, with delivery of the final report expected within 6 months. The committee's assessment was to be performed in the context of current and planned neutrino capabilities throughout the world. Specifically, the study was to address the unique capabilities of each class of new experiment and any possible redundancy between the two types of facility.

Book excerpt: Over the past five decades, the frontiers of neutrino astronomy have expanded from the Suns interior to the Large Magellanic Cloud with the observation of SN 1987A. Recently, the limits of the observable neutrino sky were expanded to include extra-galactic sources with the discovery of 10 TeV-PeV neutrinos at the IceCube Observatory. In this dissertation, I review the unique properties of neutrinos starting from their hypothesized existence in 1930 and including the phenomena of neutrino flavor oscillations, which resulted in the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2015. I go on to present three astrophysical modelssupernovae (SNe) and hypernovae in starburst galaxies, choked jet and low- luminosity Gamma-Ray Bursts, and jetted Tidal Disruption Eventsin an attempt to explain the source of the observed diffuse flux of neutrinos. Multi-messenger studies that combine electromagnetic (e.g., gamma-ray) and neutrino observations have begun to rule out gamma-ray bright source models such as starburst galaxies. In chapter 5, I present the first coincidence search between a sub-set of gamma-ray dark transients (Type-Ibc core-collapse SNe) and IceCube neutrino events. Because I do not find a connection between core-collapse SNe, I can place limits on the fraction of the explosion energy that can be converted into cosmic-raysand ultimately non-thermal very-high-energy neutrinosas well as the fraction of such SNe that may harbor a jet pointed towards Earth. I conclude this work with a review of very-high-energy neutrino astronomy over the last decade and some future work that may help us to understand what the sources of astrophysical neutrinos are.

Book excerpt: Abstract Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transient events in the observed Universe. However, there is no direct observational evidence for what exactly drives a GRB. The most widely accepted model for these cosmic events is the fireball model where it is thought that a substantial fraction of the kinetic energy of the source is converted to gamma-radiation by shock accelerated electrons emitting synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation. The acceleration of protons in the gamma-ray emitting region of the GRB has been hypothesized as well. In this hadronic acceleration model, it is predicted that protons may interact with gamma-ray photons to produce a burst of neutrinos at energy ∼10^14 eV during prompt emission and energy ∼10^18 eV during afterglow emission. Several experimental searches for these high energy neutrinos have been conducted and no GRB neutrinos have yet been found. The analytical prediction for neutrino flux has been replaced with a more thorough numerical prediction for neutrino flux. The neutron model of GRBs, where only neutrons can escape the GRB and reach Earth as cosmic rays, has been ruled out by the experimental work of IceCube and ANTARES. Upgraded versions of current experiments such as IceCube, ANTARES, ANITA and ARA, as well as new experiments such as KM3NeT, are preparing to probe and further constrain the fireball paradigm of GRB neutrino production. Book excerpt: Neutrino astronomy began with the detection of solar neutrinos, supernova neutrinos(SN1987A) and more recently the 37 events in IceCube which are very likelyto be an astrophysical origin. The result from IceCube is perhaps the most excitingdiscovery of the year 2013, capping a several decades long search. Variousastrophysical candidates have been proposed as sources of high energy neutrinos,although the origin of the IceCube neutrinos remains a mystery. Gamma-raybursts (GRBs), the most energetic explosions in the universe, were considered asthe most promising source for high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos (with AGNs).However, a previous search of GRB neutrinos by IceCube surprised the GRB communitywith negative results, challenging the simple standard picture of GRBprompt emission which is called the \internal shock" model. In this thesis we givea closer investigation of this model as well as several leading alternative models.With a careful consideration of the particle physics and the model parameters weshow that the previous negative result with GRB neutrinos is not surprising, andonly those models with extremely optimistic parameters can be ruled out. Wepredict that GRBs are unlikely to be the sole sources of the IceCube events, butsignals of GRB neutrinos may be detected in the near future, with the neutrinotelescopes such as IceCube/DeepCore, KM3Net, ARA, ARIANNA, ANITA etc.

Book excerpt: Despite its immense success, the Standard Model of particle physics is unable to provide an explanation of the nature of dark matter and the origin of neutrino masses. A desire to jointly explain these two mysteries motivates careful studies of neutrino properties. The goal of this thesis is to explore possible connections of neutrinos to beyond Standard Model physics. In particular, we will focus on searches for high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and develop new tools that undergird these searches. First, we perform an analysis looking for an excess of neutrinos from the direction of the Sun using data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Such an excess would be a signature of dark matter captured by scattering on solar nuclei and annihilating to Standard Model particles. In addition, we will describe using this same analysis framework to search for the predicted, but yet-unobserved flux of solar atmospheric neutrinos created when cosmic rays interact and produce meson in the thin solar atmosphere. To perform these analysis, we develop the [chi]aro[nu] package, which simulates the neutrino yields from dark matter annihilation and decay. Next, we will turn our attention to flavor physics, and discuss how new physics may manifest in the ratio of neutrino flavors at Earth. In particular, we will discuss the importance of tau neutrino identification in understanding the flavor triangle.Then we will introduce the TauRunner package which simulates the passage of the highest energy neutrinos through arbitrary media, including previously neglected effects. This new simulation framework will then be applied to simulating ultra-high-mass dark matter in the solar core, in an attempt to evade the solar opacity limit. Finally, we will describe the simulation framework that has been developed for the Tau Air-Shower Mountain-Based Observatory. This proposed, next-generation detector in the Colca Valley of Peru could provide a tau-pure flux of neutrinos in the 1~PeV--100~PeV energy range. Finally, we will describe the Prometheus simulation package, an open-source framework for simulating neutrino telescopes with arbitrary geometries in water and ice. For the first time, this allows for a consistent simulation framework between the global network of neutrino telescopes that is currently being constructed. Furthermore, this allows for the rapid prototyping of new reconstruction and data storage techniques with easy, cross-detector application. We provide two examples of such techniques: a machine-learning-based reconstruction capable of running faster than the trigger rate of neutrino telescopes; and a demonstration of efficiently storing event-level data from neutrino telescopes in quantum memory.
