Book Drivers and disruptors shaping the future of agriculture and the food system in LAC Climate change and trade tensions

Download or read book Drivers and disruptors shaping the future of agriculture and the food system in LAC Climate change and trade tensions written by Piñeiro, Valeria and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agri-food production remains vital to the economies in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Food systems are rapidly changing and are driven by income growth, (urban) population growth, shifts in dietary preferences, and agricultural productivity growth. Food systems are also under threat from disrupters like climate change and distorting policies (including trade wars). This paper makes two quantitative, forward-looking assessments for the future of food and agriculture in the LAC region. The first focuses on the long-term prospects - given projected pathways for the main drivers and under the threat of climate change. The second focuses on current vulnerability of LACs agri-food system to short-term disrupters with special reference to impacts of global trade wars and the prospects for reducing that vulnerability. The implications are not uniform across the countries in the region, but vary greatly depending on economic and demographic size, contribution of the agricultural sector to national GDP, natural resource endowments, ecological and climatic characteristics, level of sophistication of rural and agrarian institutions, available technology, farm-size distribution and tenure systems. Policy interventions to address the challenges will need to consider those differences in initial conditions. The foresight assessments are built on IFPRI’s core global model frameworks, IMPACT and MIRAGRODEP. They allow to capture the complexity of agri-food system development and the scenario analysis helps quantify the relative importance of the drivers and disruptors of food system change, which in turn should be of essential to policymakers in setting priorities for steering towards sustainable and stable food systems capable of meeting twenty-first century challenges.

Book Agricultural Transformation Food and Environment

Download or read book Agricultural Transformation Food and Environment written by Henry Buller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An interdisciplinary team of leading European scholars bring together case studies from Western and Eastern Europe to illustrate and critically analyze the shifting relationships of agricultural, environmental and food policy in Europe. In the most comprehensive book of its kind it examines the critical changes, both in agricultural, environmental and food politics and the way these domains have been investigated by European social scientists. The book evaluates specific changes, focussing in particular on agricultural restructuring (in the face of globalization, Europeanization and the collapse of the Soviet model of agricultural organization), agriculture-environmental relations and consumer preferences. Beginning by examining the degree to which Europe offers a unique and identifiable rural experience, the book includes a critical re-examination of the process of agricultural transformation. In the light of contemporary events and the over-seductive and essentially mythical notion of post-productivism.

Book Agricultural Standards

Download or read book Agricultural Standards written by Jim Bingen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food and agricultural standards have recently risen to the top of both national and international agendas. Popular concerns about the power of the World Trade Organization focus on the intertwined relationships between environmental protection, labor and human rights, and the standards used to produce and supply our food and fiber globally. In the developing world, agricultural grades and standards are an important part of the reconfiguration of roles and responsibilities between various public and private actors in market reform. This original and informative collection of studies of agri-food standards in the modern economy addresses these and helps to define the scope of the emerging study of the politics of standards setting. Following an overview essay dealing with the multiple ways of thinking about, approaching and defining food and agricultural standards, eleven case studies offer a rich body of evidence that assesses the processes, dynamics and potential consequences of global agri-food standards. For all interested in the strategic use of food and agricultural standards – from those in national and international governmental agencies, researchers and others in the academic and private sector to those in the private business sector – this volume offers a broader perspective on and will serve as an important resource.

Book Globalisation Localisation and Sustainable Livelihoods

Download or read book Globalisation Localisation and Sustainable Livelihoods written by Geoffrey Lawrence and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. One of the greatest concerns facing the world is how to ensure that sustainable outcomes are generated as globalization proceeds apace. Quite simply, many people are finding their life chances deteriorating - with resistance to globalization being a common response. The question is: is it possible to guarantee sustainable livelihoods for individuals, families and communities as global processes increasingly shape local social relations? This volume is a collection of 16 chapters from leading rural sociologists and human geographers based in Europe, Australasia, and the Americas. The book, in three parts, deals with globalization and food; the restructuring of local agriculture; and communities and resistance in a globalizing world. The introduction to the book compares and contrasts the various experiences of communities in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Finland, Norway, South Africa and the United States as they "struggle" to cope with globalization and its effects. Each chapter discusses options to ameliorate the local consequences of global change.
