Plans include over £70 billion of investment in transport, over £20 billion in schools and £10 billion in science, housing and flood defences. Specific commitments include funding for HS2, the biggest programme of investment in roads since the 1970s, and superfast broadband provision will be expanded so 95 per cent of UK premises will have access to superfast broadband by 2017.Action is being taken to provide the support needed to enable up to £100 billion of private sector energy investment, including through the further roll-out and extension of the UK guarantees scheme. Lessons on successful project delivery will be learnt from the Olympics and similar examples.

Since then, it has come to be regarded an obvious explanation for the vote to Leave the European Union. Subsequent opinion polls have raised doubts about the extent of continuing English commitment to the Union of the United Kingdom itself. Yet even as Englishness is apparently reshaping Britain's place in world and perhaps, ultimately, the state itself, it remains poorly understood. In this book Ailsa Henderson and Richard Wyn Jones draw on data from the Future of England Survey, a specially commissioned public attitudes survey programme exploring the political implications of English identity, to make new and original arguments about the nature of English nationalism. By 2020 the UK electricity network will need to accommodate a far more diverse energy mix that includes a much higher proportion of renewables that cannot respond so easily to fluctuating demand. The only cost-effective response to these developments is the creation of a smart grid that intelligently manages demand and supply across the energy system. Concerns noted in the report include: Ofgem granting funding for new grid investment projects before the completion of a fundamental review of how better use can be made of the existing network; the increase in the cost of managing electricity flows across the system caused by inherent flaws in the British Electricity Trading and Transmission Arrangements (BETTA); the industry's failure to agree a new transmission access regime that will tackle the queue of 60 GW of generation, a large proportion of which is renewables, waiting to connect to the grid; the absence of a "culture of innovation" within the networks sector; the growing shortage of trained people in the networks sector.
