Book Asia Pacific Crossroads

Download or read book Asia Pacific Crossroads written by Vinod K. Aggarwal and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1998-05-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As perhaps the world's most economically dynamic region, the Asia-Pacific is generating increasing attention from academic, business, and policymaking circles alike. At a time when the area is projected to continue its unprecedented economic growth well into the 21st century, it is ironic that the Asia-Pacific regional institutional framework is incommensurate with developments in other parts of the world. The most ambitious attempt at regime creation in this region began in 1989 with the formation of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC). Asia-Pacific Crossroads provides a novel theoretical approach to examine the interplay of economic, political, and security factors in APEC's evolution. It focuses on the likelihood for APEC to become smoothly 'nested' within the World Trade Organization and considers how subregional groupings in the Asia-Pacific might in turn become nested within APEC. The essays draw on the examples of the OECD and the EU to explore APEC's future prospects for fostering economic liberalization in the Asia-Pacific and across the globe. The book offers the first rigorous and systematic theoretical and empirical examination of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum by a multinational, interdisciplinary group of scholars.

Book View from the 19th Floor

Download or read book View from the 19th Floor written by William Bodde and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1994 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VIEW FROM THE 19th FLOOR: Reflections of the first APEC Executive Director is, in the words of the author, "part narrative, part case study and part of my own thoughts about where APEC should be headed". In 1993, United States Ambassador William Bodde was sent to Singapore to set up a new economic organization. Bodde clearly relished the challenge of establishing a brand new international economic organization in the most dynamic region of the world. Instructed to keep the Secretariat small, effective and financially accountable, he describes his efforts to build a functioning, cross-cultural institution in less than a year. He also has to satisfy the fifteen-member economies spanning the Pacific that the organization reflected the wishes of all APEC members and not just those of the United States! This account, in addition to serving as a case study in international public administration, chronicles the meetings of the APEC Senior Officials and Ministers leading up to the historic APEC Leader's Meeting in Seattle at the end of 1993. He concludes the monographs with a number of provocative organizational and policy recommendations for the future of APEC.

Book Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation APEC

Download or read book Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation APEC written by Werner Draguhn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was founded in 1989. Since then the forum has developed into a major player in tri-partite relations between North America, East Asia and Europe. The Seattle and Bogor Summits were landmark events suggesting to many observers a gravitational shift in the world economy and world politics. Yet the Asian financial crisis had a sobering effect on high-flying expectations as APEC contributed little to crisis management. In the light of such contradictory performance, distinguished scholars here examine APEC's achievements and failures, its role and functions in international relations, its linkages with regional organisations and the interplay between the forum and national interests of major factors in the region.

Book excerpt: Political and academic interest in economic relations among APEC economies and in the APEC process has been gaining momentum. The November 1993 Seattle meetings of APEC ministers and leaders marked a turning point for the APEC forum.APEC: Challenges and Opportunities is the result of the First APEC Roundtable held in June 1994 to analyze the issues involved and explore the future direction of APEC. Two papers provide the background for the analysis of APEC economic relations and the co-operation agenda, one examining security issues in the region and the other, the economic dynamism of East Asia. The next set of papers trace the evolution of the concept of Asia-Pacific economic co-operation, examine the APEC process and structure as well as differences in American and Asia approaches, and explore the likely institutional structure and appropriate agenda for APEC. Also looked into are the trends and patterns of trade and investment interdependence among the APEC countries, the various options for regional trade and investment facilitation, and the cse for an APEC free trade area and an APEC investment code. The two final papers examine subsets of the APEC relationships, namely, the complementary and competitive elements between ASEAN and APEC and between ASEAN and NAFTA.

Book APEC at 20

    Book Details:
  • Author : K Kesavapany
  • Publisher : Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9814279269
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book APEC at 20 written by K Kesavapany and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2009 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning 20 years of history, the achievements of APEC may seem uneventful in the eyes of some observers. Yet careful deliberation will point to APEC's many remarkable high points as well as some of the challenges. The foundations of APEC were set in place about 40 years ago based on the achievements of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC). One of the cornerstones of APEC's vision is to achieve a free and open trade area among its member economies. This vision is anchored in the Bogor Goals that remain the centrepiece of the APEC process. The Bogor Goals represent a cause for celebration as well as angst. Celebration because the region has moved towards achieving a much more liberalized environment of trading and investment since 1989, angst because the deadlines for achieving the goals have not yet been fully realized. Today, APEC embraces many of the world's dynamic developed and developing economies that are better poised to meet the new challenges of this century. For those seeking to get a quick sweep of APEC, this book recalls, reflects and provides enough food for thought on the possible remake of APEC. The chapters are carefully written by experts who have been directly involved in the APEC process one way or another. The invaluable insights serve to place the whole APEC process in a balanced perspective, yet with candid deliberations.

Book Apec And The Rise Of China

Download or read book Apec And The Rise Of China written by John Wong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-03-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intra-regional trade has been rising rapidly, especially after China's accession to the WTO in 2001. China's economy is expanding rapidly, and has already passed Japan in 2010 to become the world's second largest economy. It is clearly producing a huge impact on the world economy, and particularly on ASEAN countries. This is the appropriate time to take stock: what has APEC achieved so far? How is China's rapid growth shaping the course of economic integration and cooperation in the region? What is the future of APEC? This book is based on papers presented by scholars with expertise in the Asia Pacific region at a conference on “APEC at 20 and the Rise of China” organized by the APEC Centre of Lingnan University on 26-27 February 2010, and includes additional invited papers.

Book Assessing APEC s Progress

Download or read book Assessing APEC s Progress written by Richard E. Feinberg and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2001 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its first ten years, what has the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) accomplished? Has the 21-member forum - including the United States, Japan, China, Mexico, and most of Southeast Asia -- fulfilled its promise? To answer these vital questions, leading scholars at APEC Study Centres from thirteen APEC member economies undertook detailed studies of such central issues as trade in services, investment policy, human resource development, food and agriculture, energy, and financial stability. The findings are summarized in a policy report, "Learning From Experience", that has received wide praise and close scrutiny from senior government officials. The report concludes that APEC has successfully established itself as a world-class forum that has contributed to the affirmation of a coherent set of positive ideas. However, the report notes shortcomings in each of the critical areas of trade and investment liberalization, economic and technical cooperation, and institutional structure, and offers remedial policy recommendations to improve APECs future performance. This volume contains both the policy report and the issue studies. It is the product of the APEC International Assessment Network (APIAN), a collaborative, independent project among participating APEC Study Centres to track and assess the design and execution of key APEC initiatives.
