Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is not the only route to understanding nature. This volume presents a series of case studies in comparative epistemology, critically comparing the works of prominent representatives of the life sciences, such as Aristotle, Darwin, and Mendel, with the writings of literary masters, such as Andersen, Melville, Verne, and Ibsen. It constitutes a major contribution to the growing field of science and literature studies.

Download or read book The Laboratory Mouse Second Edition written by Peggy J. Danneman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mice have long been recognized as a valuable tool for investigating the genetic and physiological bases of human diseases such as diabetes, infectious disease, cancer, heart disease, and a wide array of neurological disorders. With the advent of transgenic and other genetic engineering technologies, the versatility and usefulness of the mouse as a model in biomedical research has soared. As a result, mouse colonies everywhere are expanding, and scientists who previously focused on other models are turning their attention to the mouse. Revised to reflect advances since the first edition, The Laboratory Mouse, Second Edition continues to be the most accessible reference on the biology and care of the laboratory mouse. This guide presents basic information and common procedures in detail to provide a quick reference source for investigators, technicians, and caretakers in the humane care and use of the mouse in the laboratory setting. Expanded, updated, and now in color, this new edition includes coverage of the biological features, husbandry, management, veterinary care, experimental methodology, and resources applying specifically to the mouse.
Download or read book Animal Liberation written by Peter Singer and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should we treat non-human animals? In this immensely powerful and influential book (now with a new introduction by Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari), the renowned moral philosopher Peter Singer addresses this simple question with trenchant, dispassionate reasoning. Accompanied by the disturbing evidence of factory farms and laboratories, his answers triggered the birth of the animal rights movement. 'An extraordinary book which has had extraordinary effects... Widely known as the bible of the animal liberation movement' Independent on Sunday In the decades since this landmark classic first appeared, some public attitudes to animals may have changed but our continued abuse of animals in factory farms and as tools for research shows that the underlying ideas Singer exposes as ethically indefensible are still dominating the way we treat animals. As Yuval Harari’s brilliantly argued introduction makes clear, this book is as relevant now as the day it was written.

Download or read book Genetic Engineering of Animals written by J. Evans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Warren Evans Department of Animal Science Texas A&M University College Station, Texas 77843 In the near future, improvement of domestic animals for the production of food and fiber is poised to undergo a revolution by the utilization of recent breakthroughs and advances in molecular genetics, embryo manipula tions, and gene transfer systems. Utilization of these techniques will have a wide impact on animal agriculture by improvement of production effi ciency via manipulation and control of many physiological systems. The end result will be to decrease production costs, increase food production and quality, and lower food costs. Health and well being of domestic and other animals will be improved as a result of new methods of disease diagnosis, vaccine production, and disease prevention practices. Genetic engineering also offers the possibility of utilizing animals for the development of pharmaceutical products to benefit society. Research progress will be en hanced via manipulation of the gene pool. The objectives of this Conference were to discuss the current status of animal bioengineering and to realistically assess the potential applica tions of current and future genetic technologies for the production of food and fiber to meet the needs of our hungry world, and to provide animal sci entists who may wish to utilize bioengineering in current or future re search programs with current background information regarding concepts, ap plications, and methodologies.
