Book excerpt: It has been over twenty years since the publication of The Ragamuffin Gospel, a book many claim as the shattering of God’s grace into their lives. Since that time, Brennan Manning has been dazzingly faithful in preaching and writing variations on that singular theme – “Yes, Abba is very fond of you!” But today the crowds are gone and the lights are dim, the patches on his knees have faded. If he ever was a ragamuffin, truly it is now. In this his final book, Brennan roves back his past, honoring the lives of the people closest to him, family and friends who’ve known the saint and the sinner, the boy and the man. Far from some chronological timeline, these memories are witness to the truth of life by one who has lived it – All Is Grace.

Book excerpt: The Signature of Jesus challenges the gospel of "cheap grace" and calls the church to radical discipleship. With passion and boldness, author Brennan Manning invites readers to risk living life as Jesus lived—committed to simplicity, purity of heart, and obedience to the gospel. As a radical alternative this book is offered to Christians who want to live by faith and not by mere “religion,” for those who recognize that many of the burning theological issues in the church today are neither burning nor theological; who see Christianity neither as a moral code or a belief system but as a love affair; who have not forgotten that they are followers of a crucified Christ; who know that following him means living dangerously; who want to live the gospel without compromise; who have no greater desire than to have his signature written on the pages of their lives. “Behold,” Jesus proclaims, “I stand at the door and knock.” You may have already met him at the door…but do you truly know him? Have you been transformed by His furious, passionate, unexplainable love? Join Brennan Manning, the bestselling author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, on a personal journey to experience Christ’s love and live with His passion.

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-10-05

Download or read book The Indescribable God written by Barry D. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The God of classical Christian faith is radically transcendent--utterly beyond understanding and words. So if God is to be known it must be in the luminous darkness of unknowing. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources--biblical, patristic, and medieval--Barry D. Smith identifies and explores seven ways of expressing the otherness of God in classical Christian thinking. By allowing historical theologians to speak for themselves, he shows how an aversion to ontotheology long precedes postmodernism. The book first lays out the Old Testament and New Testament foundations for subsequent Christian reflections on divine transcendence. These were the teachings that the early church assumed and, with the assistance of Greek philosophy, further refined with their own set of apophatic conceptual tools. The main focus of the book is a sevenfold exposition of that theological refinement. Smith concludes by looking towards possible future theological developments within this apophatic tradition. Drawing on the theological methodology of historic Christianity, he indicates how a synthesis of the biblical teaching on the otherness of God with philosophical traditions other than those inherited from Greek philosophy is also possible.

Book The Amour Of God

  • Author : Frank C Benjamin
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2020-06-05

  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book The Amour Of God written by Frank C Benjamin and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We do not wrestle against flesh and blood. The Bible often illustrates the Christian life as a battle against sin and Satan. We are soldiers of Christ in a spiritual warfare (2 Cor 10:3, 4; 2 Tim 2:3, 4). As Scripture says, "We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against . . . spiritual hosts of wickedness" (Eph 6:12). That's why the apostle Paul encourages Christians to "put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (verse 11).The armor of God, found in Ephesians 6:10-18, is made up of the following six items: The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit. A list and description of the full armor of God can be found below.Let's take a look at each of this spiritual armor and see how it can enable us to be victorious as soldiers for Christ in our batt-le against the spiritual hosts of wickedness. Read Ephesians 6:10-20 to remind yourself of the armor when times are difficult. While you should make it a habit to read the Bible each day, if you find yourself sud-denly struggling with difficult circumstan-ces or unusual feelings of discouragement, it could be a sign that you're facing a spirit-ual attack. When that happens, try reading the entire passage where Paul describes the whole armor of God. It may give you the encouragement you need to stand strong and regain your peace.

Book Hating God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard Schweizer
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-11-04
  • ISBN : 0199780013
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Hating God written by Bernard Schweizer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While atheists such as Richard Dawkins have now become public figures, there is another and perhaps darker strain of religious rebellion that has remained out of sight--people who hate God. In this revealing book, Bernard Schweizer looks at men and women who do not question God's existence, but deny that He is merciful, competent, or good. Sifting through a wide range of literary and historical works, Schweizer finds that people hate God for a variety of reasons. Some are motivated by social injustice, human suffering, or natural catastrophes that God does not prevent. Some blame God for their personal tragedies. Schweizer concludes that, despite their blasphemous thoughts, these people tend to be creative and moral individuals, and include such literary lights as Friedrich Nietzsche, Mark Twain, Zora Neale Hurston, Rebecca West, Elie Wiesel, and Philip Pullman. Schweizer shows that literature is a fertile ground for God haters. Many authors, who dare not voice their negative attitude to God openly, turn to fiction to give vent to it. Indeed, Schweizer provides many new and startling readings of literary masterpieces, highlighting the undercurrent of hatred for God. Moreover, by probing the deeper mainsprings that cause sensible, rational, and moral beings to turn against God, Schweizer offers answers to some of the most vexing questions that beset human relationships with the divine.
