Book Principles of Religious Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Religious Life Classic Reprint written by Francis Cuthbert Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Religious Life The chief object for which this work has been written is to furnish those who wish to lead a solidly devout life in the Ecclesiastical, in the Religious, or in the Secular State, with a manual or text-book containing, in as compendious a form as possible, the 'principles' upon which such a life must be built. The sources whence materials for an undertaking of this kind may be drawn are various and numerous; but out of the many at my disposal, two are especially deserving of mention, inasmuch as it has been by the doctrine which I have learnt from them, that I have been guided in much that has been treated of in this book. The first of these are the works of Cassian, to which, as a child of St. Benedict, I felt myself drawn as it were by instinct; for, it was from the world-famed 'Conferences' of this learned ascetic that our holy Father drew much of that spiritual lore which is so conspicuous in the various enactments of his Rule, and to the pages of which he refers his children, for those sublime lessons of spiritual wisdom, which will lead them to the topmost height of Christian perfection. Cassian's teaching, save upon the question of divine grace, is unexceptionally good. His deficiency upon this point may be satisfactorily accounted for, if we bear in mind that in his day various questions which arise out of this most intricate subject had not been thoroughly examined into and set at rest for ever by the infallible decision of the Church. The second is the 'Theologia Mystica' of Father Dominick Schram, O.S.B., in which that erudite Religious has bequeathed to us valuable treasures of Christian asceticism arranged with scientific accuracy, and stored away with scholastic neatness and precision. The plan of which I have made use for reducing to order the mass of material which presented itself to my hands, is a very simple one. Book The Fundamentals of the Religious State Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fundamentals of the Religious State Classic Reprint written by Shirley Carter Hughson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals of the Religious State After three hundred years' suppression, the Religious Life in the Anglican Communion was revived now nearly three-quarters of a century ago. During this period it has produced, in one form or another, a wealth of literature, most of it being of a devotional character. Although the principles of the Life have been assiduously studied by men and women of learn ing and ability, no book has yet been written which can be freely put as a text-book into the hands of aspirants and others desiring to know what are the technical principles of the Religious State. It is with no little hesitation that the present author offers this book to his Religious and clerical brethren. A work of this kind should be prepared by one of leisure and learning, not by a busy mission priest who has had neither time nor freedom to acquire the scholarship that should be brought to bear upon such a subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles and Practices, of the Spiritual Life Must begin as they are, with their many sins and imperfections and ignorances, and work on towards an end that becomes clearer as they advance, and yet ever more difficult of attain ment. Indeed, they have to work towards an end which at first they cannot see, for only as the eye of the soul becomes purified does it get to see clearly what holiness means, and how imperfect were its first conceptions of it. It is a good thing, therefore, to concentrate our efforts, to be definite in our aim, to set before ourselves clearly some one purpose, some special virtue to strive after, upon the attainment of which we shall have advanced considerably towards holi ness of life. He considers himself favored to be able to recommend it most earnestly. The Vicar-General de Ville, of Lyons, pronounces it to be the very best book that can be offered to religious for their instruction. The German translation was very favorably received. Many religious wrote to the translator to express their sincere gratitude for having published it in German. This translation is from the German edition. This book commences: "YOU have opened your heart to the voice of our most beloved Saviour, who, in His goodness and mercy, has called you to the religious life. You have courageously followed this call and have overcome all the difficulties and obstacles in your way. Up to the present you have performed all your religious duties generously, zealously, and joyously, but remember that this is not sufficient; you must persevere. If you grow lax in the observance of your rules and in your religious duties, you expose yourself to the gravest danger, and, even more justly than the man in the Gospel, to the reproach of having laid the foundation of a magnificent structure, but of not having finished it. "Perseverance completes the work; and he who perseveres unto the end shall be crowned."

All but one of them was spoken, not written; and they are now published from the stenographer's notes. They do not, then, pretend to be a complete treatise on their subject. They have the limits of their method and their imme diate aim. But, having reason to believe they were helpful to many, as preached, I send them out to preach again, in another form and to another audience. Book Sermons on the Christian Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons on the Christian Life Classic Reprint written by George Burgess and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The publisher of this volume has been anxiously desirous to promote, by such means as his position might place in his power, the habit of reading for direct religious edification. He has believed that, both in the private chamber and in the family circle, especially when any are deprived, wholly or partially, of the privileges of the sanctuary, no other books will quite supply the place of printed sermons; and he has regretted that, in our country, so few volumes of this class are offered to the public. In the hope that the taste of thoughtful persons may not be yet at settled variance with what was formerly esteemed so favourable to the growth of individual and domestic piety, he determined to enter on the publication of several volumes from living preachers of the Church, if their consent could be obtained, and if the first results of the enterprise should not be mere discouragements. Download or read book Personal Elements in Religious Life Classic Reprint written by Willis Duke Weatherford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Elements in Religious Life A word as to the origin of these papers will perhaps be the best preface. In 1912, at the University of Nanking, in China, the author was asked to give a series of addresses on the attitude of modern scholarship toward Christianity. The material, hurriedly compiled at that time, suggested the idea of a more thorough statement. Two years later the Young Women's Christian Association asked for a series of six addresses on Fundamentals at their Southern Confer ence at Blue Ridge. The hunger with which the nearly six hundred delegates heard these statements, together with scores of personal interviews with those eagerly seeking fur ther light, led one to believe that there was great need for a simple statement of these basic ideas Of Christianity. This response at the women's conference brought a request from the leaders of the men's conference that these addresses be given in part for that gathering in 1915. Since then many colleges have asked for certain presentations along this view of thought: The chapters here given are not addresses, but written statements growing out of these addresses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Life and Thought The following observations on Religious Life and Thought, although appearing in the popular form of Sermons, and printed as they were delivered from week to week to my own Congrega tion, and having the slightness of structure that such communi cations require, are not hasty expressions of opinion. They are portions of a deliberately formed body of opinion. The concep tions of religion to be found in them have been elaborated at leisure. The statement of these conceptions is often made with little enough leisure; but I wish it to be distinctly understood that the Sermons do not set forth tentative essays at the solution of a great problem. I would rather that they were looked upon as sundry efforts to familiarize the public mind with results at which I have myself arrived after many years of special study. Not that I suppose for a moment that I have seen wholly round the subject treated of. I know it too well to entertain any such notion. I can honestly make use of words of Kant, applied by him to another subject of inquiry: Alle Aufgaben aufib'sen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the Interior or Hidden Life: Designed Particularly for the Considerable of Those Who Are Seeking Assurance of Faith and Perfect Love Tunas is a modification or form of religious expe rience which may conveniently, and probably with a considerable degree of propriety, be denominated the Interior or Hidden Life. When a person first becomes distinctly conscious of his sinfulness, and, in connection with this experience, exercises faith in Christ as a Savior from sin, there is no doubt, however feeble these early exercises may be, that he has truly entered upon a new life. But this new life, although it is in its element dif ferent from that of the world, is only in its beginning. It embraces, undoubtedly, the true principle of arestored and renovated existence, which in due time will expand itself into heights and depths of knowledge and of feeling; but it is now only in a state of incipiency, main taining, and oftentimes but feehly maintaining, a war with the anterior or natural life, and being nothing more at present than the early rays and dawnings of the brighter day that is coming.
