Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the ability to retain, process, and project prior experience onto future situations is indispensable, the human mind also possesses the ability to override experience and adapt to changing circumstances. Cognitive scientist Stellan Ohlsson analyzes three types of deep, non-monotonic cognitive change: creative insight, adaptation of cognitive skills by learning from errors, and conversion from one belief to another, incompatible belief. For each topic, Ohlsson summarizes past research, re-formulates the relevant research questions, and proposes information-processing mechanisms that answer those questions. The three theories are based on the principles of redistribution of activation, specialization of practical knowledge, and re-subsumption of declarative information. Ohlsson develops the implications of those mechanisms by scaling their effects with respect to time, complexity, and social interaction. The book ends with a unified theory of non-monotonic cognitive change that captures the abstract properties that the three types of change share.

Book Transitions in Consciousness from an African American Perspective

Download or read book Transitions in Consciousness from an African American Perspective written by Carroy U. Ferguson and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Carroy Ferguson presents a unique glimpse into the transitional stages in consciousness that many African Americans experience as they explore the essence of being a Black person in U.S. society and the world. Using a model of six transitional stages in consciousness, original essays, and discourses on the symbolism of various historical events, Ferguson engages readers in an intriguing reflective process to give them a better understanding of how transitions in consciousness_from an African American perspective_are largely shaped and greatly influenced by the 'psychology of the times.' The essays, therefore, represent the various dynamics at play as many African Americans engage the contents of their consciousness and learn to explore and transcend various societal challenges. To assist readers in engaging their personal self-reflective processes, Ferguson provides creative exercises and a comprehensive timeline of African American life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988 this book examines the work of the first generation adult education theorists and the traditions that their work helped establish. They debated the issues, aims and content of adult education programmes and began to explore the often difficult relationship between social expectations and the potential of education. As well as providing an authoritative history during a period of rapid social change in America, the book confirms that many of the preoccupations of the early thinkers have continued relevance today.
