This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Functions of the Brain and of Each of Its Parts Even if I had had no preliminary knowledge, I could not have avoided the inference, that eyes thus formed are the mark Of an excellent memory. It was not till afterwards, that I said to myself, as I have already mentioned in the introduction to my first volume, if memory manifests itself by an external character, why should not the other faculties have their characters outwardly Visible It was this which gave the first impulse to my researches, and which was the occasion of all my discoveries. It will, no doubt, be thought singular, that it is precisely on the subject of this faculty and its organ, that my works are least complete. I shall confine myself wholly to facts. The facts will remain im moveable, even in case my manner of Viewing them should undergo some modifications. Book An Inquiry Into the Functions of the Brain in Man and in the Lower Order of Animals

Download or read book An Inquiry Into the Functions of the Brain in Man and in the Lower Order of Animals written by Richard Harlan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Functions of the Brain in Man, and in the Lower Order of Animals: Delivered as a Lecture Before the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia The short space of time allotted to these lectures will oblige me to treat of this comprehensive subject in a very cursory manner. I shall not dwell on the physical construction of the brain. To those entirely ignorant of anatomy, it will be sufficient to know, that, like many other glands, it is composed of fibres, cellular membrane, and blood vessels, - and that it is larger in man, in proportion to the nerves which go off from it, than in any other animal. Two principal ideas have been entertained by philosophers, respecting the nature of the brain and its faculties. The argu ments of the first go to prove, that the brain, the seat of the faculties of the mind, is an organ, essentially one and simple in its construction, and producing all its phenomena, by the va rions actions of the same part. They compare the actions of the nervous fibre, to muscular motion; the hand, for instance, is moved by muscular fibres solely; yet how varied and extensive are the applications of this organ. Such analogies are founded in error, and are only calculated to mislead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: With over 350 illustrations, this impressive volume traces the rich history of ideas about the functioning of the brain from its roots in the ancient cultures of Egypt, Greece, and Rome through the centuries into relatively modern times. In contrast to biographically oriented accounts, this book is unique in its emphasis on the functions of the brain and how they came to be associated with specific brain regions and systems. Among the topics explored are vision, hearing, pain, motor control, sleep, memory, speech, and various other facets of intellect. The emphasis throughout is on presenting material in a very readable way, while describing with scholarly acumen the historical evolution of the field in all its amazing wealth and detail. Download or read book Architecture of the Brain written by William Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architecture of the Brain In the following description of the Central Nervous System it is not intended to rehearse minute details which can be fond in the many excellent works upon anatomy, but to place in view in as clear and concise a manner as possible the general architecture of the central nervous system, and to trace the relation and continuity of its parts. When a general knowledge of the structure of the brain is acquired by the student a useful and practical step is gained, because he will not only be able to describe the situation of a lesion and understand the descriptions made by others, but he will be in a situation to intelligently discuss the functions of its parts, and is prepared to work in the field of discovery. The incidental assignment of function to any part of the nervous system in these pages is intended to assist the memory and awaken inquiry. Nothing stimulates the observation to the same extent as the entertainment of a theory, to be demonstrated or corrected by careful observation of facts which fall under one's own notice, or by those which can be obtained from other reliable sources. The following description has been made from dissections by the author, and has been carefully verified by a comparison of longitudinal and lateral dissections, and by sections, all of which agree in proving the correctness of the representations herein described. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy of the Brain and Spinal Cord: With Special Reference to Mechanism and Function, for Students and Practitioners The special objects held in view throughout the book are the location of functional centers and the tracing of their afferent, associative and efferent connections. Particular emphasis is laid upon the origin, course, termination and function of con duct-ion paths as they are met in the regular study, and the more important and better known of these paths are summed up in a final chapter on the tracing of impulses. Function is everywhere correlated with structure; and so far as present knowledge permits, the function of each group of neurones is given in connection with its anatomical description.
