Book The Functional Neuroanatomy of Autobiographical Memory

Download or read book The Functional Neuroanatomy of Autobiographical Memory written by Eva-Maria Svoboda and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiographical memory (AM) entails a complex set of operations, including episodic memory, self-reflection, emotion, visual imagery, attention, executive functions, and semantic processes. The heterogeneous nature of AM poses significant challenges in capturing its behavioral and neuroanatomical correlates. Investigators have recently turned their attention to the functional neuroanatomy of AM. We used the effect-location method of meta-analysis to analyze data from 24 functional imaging studies of AM. The results indicated a core neural network of left-lateralized regions, including the medial and ventrolateral prefrontal, medial and lateral temporal and retrosplenial/posterior cingulate cortices, the temporoparietal junction and the cerebellum. Secondary and tertiary regions, less frequently reported in imaging studies of AM, are also identified. We examined the neural correlates of putative component processes in AM, including, executive functions, self-reflection, episodic remembering and visuospatial processing. We also separately analyzed the effect of select variables on the AM network across individual studies, including memory age, qualitative factors (personal significance, level of detail and vividness), semantic and emotional content, and the effect of reference conditions. We found that memory age effects on medial temporal lobe structures may be modulated by qualitative aspects of memory. Studies using rest as a control task masked process-specific components of the AM neural network. Our findings support a neural distinction between episodic and semantic memory in AM. Finally, emotional events produced a shift in lateralization of the AM network with activation observed in emotion-centered regions and deactivation (or lack of activation) observed in regions associated with cognitive processes.

Book Impaired Autobiographical Memory in a Healthy Person

Download or read book Impaired Autobiographical Memory in a Healthy Person written by Daniela Palombo and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the case of S.M., a healthy woman who is unable to re-experience her past. S.M.'s impairment has been present her entire life. Her development was normal with no evidence of trauma, psychiatric history or brain injury. We assessed S.M.'s memory using two tasks that separate the contribution of episodic and non-episodic processes, the Remember/Know paradigm and the Autobiographical interview. S.M.'s episodic memory is impaired while her semantic memory is relatively intact. S.M's syndrome does not affect other cognitive domains. Her intelligence is in the superior range and performance on standardized neuropsychological tests was normal. We also used structural brain imaging to assess possible brain pathology. While overall brain analyses did not indicate any specific pathology, volume loss was observed in regions that overlap with some of the functional neuroanatomy of autobiographical memory. S.M. represents the first known case of amnesia in a healthy person. The implications of this case are discussed.

Download or read book Autobiographical Memory written by David C. Rubin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-08-26 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiographical memory is a major form of human memory. it is the basis of most psycotherapies, an important repository of legal, historical, and literary information, and, in some views, the source of the concept of self. When it fails, it is the focus of serious complaints in many neurological disorders. This timely book brings together and integrates the best contemporary work on the cognitive psychology of autobiographical memory. Introductory chapters place the study of autobiographical memory in its historical, methodological, and theoretical contexts; chapters reporting original research probe the recollections people have for substantial portions of their lives. Topics include the schematic and temporal organization of autobiographical memory, the temporal distribution of autobiographical memories, and the failures of autobiographical memory in various forms of amnesia. Autobiographical Memory constitutes the first tutorial in this exciting new area of research. Cognitive psychologists, clinicians, researchers in artificial intelligence, and their students - indeed, anyone interested in the processes that preserve and distort autobiography - will find it a useful resource.

Book Functional Neuroanatomy of Human Declarative Memory

Download or read book Functional Neuroanatomy of Human Declarative Memory written by Jeffrey Joseph Gold and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and related structures in the diencephalon play a critical role in declarative memory, which is conscious knowledge about facts and events. A fundamental question is whether there are divisions of labor of declarative memory function within the MTL or diencephalon. In one view, specific declarative memory functions (e.g., recognition memory for items) depend on some regions of the MTL and diencephalon but are entirely independent of other regions. In another view, each region of the MTL and diencephalon is important for all declarative memory functions. To address this issue, we assessed the location and extent of brain damage in memory-impaired patients using post-mortem histology and compared the effects of lesions to the MTL or diencephalon on memory performance. Next, we assessed the location and extent of brain damage in living, memory-impaired patients using structural MRI and administered memory tests to patients with damage limited to the hippocampal region. Finally, we used functional neuroimaging to study brain activity in healthy participants performing recognition memory tasks. We report that damage to the MTL or diencephalon produces a common amnesic syndrome with impaired declarative memory (anterograde and retrograde memory) but sparing of nondeclarative memory and other cognitive functions. Further, we report that proposed dichotomies between item memory and associative memory or item memory and source memory do not capture the division of labor of declarative memory function in the MTL and diencephalon. Our findings suggest that each region of the MTL and related regions of the diencephalon play an important role in all declarative memory functions.

Book Behavioral Neuroscience of Learning and Memory

Download or read book Behavioral Neuroscience of Learning and Memory written by Robert E. Clark and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Behavioral Neuroscience of Learning and Memory’ brings together the opinions and expertise of some of the world’s foremost neuroscientists in the field of learning and memory research. The volume provides a broad coverage of contemporary research and thinking in this field, focusing both on well established topics such as the medial temporal lobe memory system, as well as emerging areas of research such as the role of memory in decision making and the mechanisms of perceptual learning. Key intersecting themes include the molecular and cellular mechanisms of memory formation, the multiplicity of memory systems in the brain, and the way in which technological innovation is driving discovery. Unusually for a volume of this kind, this volume brings together research from both humans and animals—often relatively separate areas of discourse—to give a more comprehensive and integrated view of the field. The book will be of interest to both established researchers who wish to broaden their knowledge of topics outside of their specific areas of expertise, and for students who need a resource to help them make sense of the vast scientific literature on this subject.

Book Handbook of Episodic Memory

Download or read book Handbook of Episodic Memory written by Ekrem Dere and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Episodic memory is the name of the kind of memory that records personal experiences instead of the mere remembering of impersonal facts and rules. This type of memory is extremely sensitive to ageing and disease so an understanding of the mechanisms of episodic memory might lead to the development of therapies suited to improve memory in some patient populations. Episodic memory is unique in that it includes an aspect of self-awareness and helps us to remember who we are in terms of what we did and what we have been passed through and what we should do in the future. This book brings together a renowned team of contributors from the fields of cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and behavioural and molecular neuroscience. It provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of recent developments in understanding human episodic memory and animal episodic-like memory in terms of concepts, methods, mechanisms, neurobiology and pathology. The work presented within this book will have a profound effect on the direction that future research in this topic will take. - The first and most current comprehensive handbook on what we know about episodic memory, the memory of events, time, place, and emotion, and a key feature of awareness and consciousness - Articles summarize our understanding of the mechanisms of episodic memory as well as surveying the neurobiology of epsidodic memory in patients, animal studies and functional imaging work - Includes 34 heavily illustrated chapters in two sections by the leading scientists in the field
