Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Function of the Church in Modern Society Of the various ministries through which the Christian Church has from time to time wrought effectively in society there are two, which, if exercised fully and in right relation to one another, may be expected to fulfill in very large degree the function of the Church in modern society, - the ministry of spiritual authority and the ministry of human sympathy. Modern society as related to the Church is peculiar only in the fact that its demands are very exacting at these two points. Not many things are demanded of the Church to-day. Book The Revolutionary Function of the Modern Church Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolutionary Function of the Modern Church Many books have been written during the last few years upon the social aspects of religion, and this book may perhaps be regarded as only one more. N 0 one of these books, however, so far as I know, (i) has gathered up the lessons learned of late in other fields of social experience and shown their meaning in terms of religion; (2) has shown that the question of the church is thus not something apart by itself, but only one phase of the modern social question as a whole; (3) or has shown the one fundamental reason why, in dealing with the individ ual, the church, like every other redemptive agency, must go behind the individual and grapple with the social organism itself. It is these three things that this book attempts to do; and it may therefore not unjustly be described, perhaps, as breaking some new ground in this much-ploughed field. The substance of this book has been stated many times during the past year in public addresses in the pulpit and on the platform. The material, however, has been rearranged, and much new material added; so that the work, as here pre sented, is practically new. It is sent forth to that larger audience of readers, which can never be reached by the Spoken word, with much misgiving and many fears, but in the fervent hope that it may at least quicken some minds to a new understand ing of religion, and awaken some hearts to a new service of the Kingdom of God on earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Purpose of a Christian Society Probably most prefaces are postscripts, and I may say at once that this one is no exception. Some who have seen this lecture in proof have suggested the question, Why should a Lecture given to the Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends lean in this direction? It is all an appeal to the practice of the historic Church, writes one such reader, whereas the Quaker differentia is, for the most part, an appeal against the historic Church, 'the apostasy, ' in fact, to quote George Fox. I pass by the second clause here, and I admit the first, with a qualification; I appeal to the experience of the historic Church, and, if future readers of this lecture wish to know why, I will tell them. Book The Church and the Social Problem

Download or read book The Church and the Social Problem written by Samuel Plantz and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Social Problem: A Study in Applied Christianity This volume is written with the conviction that the Christian Church of the twentieth century faces a crisis of the utmost importance; and that it can only meet the needs of the age by adapting its teaching and methods of work to the peculiar conditions of our times. This fact has been often pointed out during the past few years by men of masterly power, but it must be confessed that few of the workers in the Church have heard the call and earnestly assumed the task of applying Christian principles to the social problems of our modern life. Many pulpits seem stereotyped in thought and utterance, and many Churches cemented in the forms of their activity. While this condition pertains, there is a demand for the multiplication of literature on Christian Ethics, and the application of the Gospel to society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Modern Life: Being a Study of the New Problems of the Church in American Society Warmed by the same old stars and sun. Our psy chology is new, but reason, memory, and judg ment are what they were when Plato thought and David dreamed. The creeds may have changed, but not the obligations of conscience and duty, or man's relation to his God. If the gains of our critical era have been large, the losses also have been heavy. Criticism moves in a very limited field. Its restraints are severe. Oft from endur ing Truth it hears the words, Here stay thy proud waves; thus far and no farther. Portu nately the analytic spirit soon discovers that he who picks a flower to pieces loses it. For the botanist, the field daisy means a mass of petals torn part from part, while for Robert Burns the wee crimson-tipped flower means a sweet poem and hours of rapturous delight. And now that the intellect has completed its analytic work, our generation has come to realize that the heart with its hunger is, as before, unappeased. Religion is the life of God in the soul of man. The creed is the outer, verbal photograph of that inner, vital experience. Man's interest in those verbal pic tures named creeds, unfortunately, seems waning, while his interest in religion is steadily waxing. As Edmund Burke once said, Man is by con stitution a religious animal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Church in the Commonwealth Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church in the Commonwealth Classic Reprint written by Richard Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church in the Commonwealth The events of the present time have started much serious enquiry into the validity of our accepted institutions and our traditional habits of thought. Our conceptions of the State, of the Church, of the organisation of Industry, of the Status of Woman in the commonwealth, and of many other things have been directly challenged; and it is commonly acknowledged that a frank and thorough-going examination of our current postulates, political, religious, economic and social, is urgently called for. This series is intended to be a tentative contribution to the discussion of the problems thus raised. The writers of these volumes do not profess to have a complete philosophy of reconstruction; nor hate they endeavoured to co-ordinate their thoughts into a coherent polity. They treat of matters upon which they are not all agreed; but they agree that Society should be organised with a View to the free development of all the finer interests and activities of men, and that such organisation must take account of local and spiritual differences. Apart from this general agreement, they have worked out their several theses independently and are severally alone responsible for the opinions expressed in the volumes published under their names. The volumes in the series will cover the main subjects relative to the function of the State. Those already planned will treat of the State in its relation to other slates, to religion, to industry, to society, to woman, to the individual, to art, education and crime. Book Democracy and the Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Democracy and the Church Classic Reprint written by Samuel George Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and the Church For a long time I have wondered why it is that many intelligent persons who accept the genetic View of the development of life have no open-mindedness for the genetic view of history. They recognize that there are certain periods in the history of life when old environments give way, new forms of life appear showing a fresh summertime, and sustaining heart and hope. This class of persons may recognize that there is a history of art, and if they do not glory in the pre-raphaelite as Beauty's last word or accept the impressionist's school as the final despair of the creative gods, they do see continuity in Art; they do recognize that every time must create its own artistic forms in harmony with the terms and the conditions of its life. Literature in successive periods may flower out in the great secular bibles; the works of Homer, zeschylus, Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe. But even these men are social products as well as social forces, and literature has its continuity, its progress and its invincible relationships. Book Christianity in the New Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in the New Age Classic Reprint written by Emily Herman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability.
