Book The Fugitive Gesture

Download or read book The Fugitive Gesture written by William A. Ewing and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1994 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tribute to a major photographic genre's success in capturing in permanent form the most ephemeral of the arts. Over 200 reproduced duotone plates reveal dance in all its aspects - from many countries and periods, from classical ballet to rock and roll - photographed wherever dancers waltz, tango, tap-dance, pirouette, stomp, jive or kick up their heels for joy. The great dancers are here - Nijinsky, Fred Astaire, Pavlova, Fonteyn and Isadora Duncan among other immortals; but so too are the anonymous, captured in a Parisian nightclub or at the Roxy, New York, an Amsterdam street cafe or simply dancing alone by the seashore. The wide range of photographers include Gordon Anthony, Barbara Morgan, Beaton, Degas, Genthe, Steichen, Horst, Man Ray and Helmut Newton. Introductions to each chapter and detailed notes on the photographs provide essential background about the dancers and photographers.

Book The Minor Gesture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erin Manning
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2016-05-19
  • ISBN : 0822374412
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book The Minor Gesture written by Erin Manning and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging and probing book Erin Manning extends her previous inquiries into the politics of movement to the concept of the minor gesture. The minor gesture, although it may pass almost unperceived, transforms the field of relations. More than a chance variation, less than a volition, it requires rethinking common assumptions about human agency and political action. To embrace the minor gesture's power to fashion relations, its capacity to open new modes of experience and manners of expression, is to challenge the ways in which the neurotypical image of the human devalues alternative ways of being moved by and moving through the world—in particular what Manning terms "autistic perception." Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis and Whitehead's speculative pragmatism, Manning's far-reaching analyses range from fashion to depression to the writings of autistics, in each case affirming the neurodiversity of the minor and the alternative politics it gestures toward.

Book I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang

Download or read book I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang written by Robert E. Burns and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang! is the amazing true story of one man's search for meaning, fall from grace, and eventual victory over injustice. In 1921, Robert E. Burns was a shell-shocked and penniless veteran who found himself at the mercy of Georgia's barbaric penal system when he fell in with a gang of petty thieves. Sentenced to six to ten years' hard labor for his part in a robbery that netted less than $6.00, Burns was shackled to a county chain gang. After four months of backbreaking work, he made a daring escape, dodging shotgun blasts, racing through swamps, and eluding bloodhounds on his way north. For seven years Burns lived as a free man. He married and became a prosperous Chicago businessman and publisher. When he fell in love with another woman, however, his jealous wife turned him in to the police, who arrested him as a fugitive from justice. Although he was promised lenient treatment and a quick pardon, he was back on a chain gang within a month. Undaunted, Burns did the impossible and escaped a second time, this time to New Jersey. He was still a hunted man living in hiding when this book was first published in 1932. The book and its movie version, nominated for a Best Picture Oscar in 1933, shocked the world by exposing Georgia's brutal treatment of prisoners. I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang! is a daring and heartbreaking book, an odyssey of misfortune, love, betrayal, adventure, and, above all, the unshakable courage and inner strength of the fugitive himself.

The arts have always been nurtured in the Spa City, and in 1964, the world-famous founder of the New York City Ballet, George Balanchine, decided to make the new Saratoga Performing Arts Center his company's summer home. The company has brought some of the world's most famous dancers and choreographers to Saratoga ever since. Skidmore College offered one of the best dance programs in the nation, and several prestigious academies and summer programs have made Saratoga their home, helping young people from Lake Avenue and around the world achieve that illustrious dream of dancing professionally. Skidmore dance professor Denise Warner Limoli narrates this beautiful history, from turn-of-the-century "floral fetes" to today's vibrant dance community.

Book Gestures of Testimony

Download or read book Gestures of Testimony written by Michael Richardson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 9/11, the United States became a nation that sanctioned torture. Detainees across the globe were waterboarded, deprived of sleep, beaten by guards, blasted with deafening music and forced into obscene acts. Their torture presents a profound problem for literature: torturous pain and its traumatic aftermath have long been held to destroy language, shatter experience, and refuse representation. Challenging accepted thinking, Gestures of Testimony asks how literature might bear witness to the tortures of a war waged against fear itself. Bringing the vibrant field of affect theory to bear on theories of torture and power, Richardson adopts an interdisciplinary approach to show how testimony founded in affect can bear witness to torture and its traumas. Grounded in provocative readings of poems by Guantanamo detainees, memoirs of interrogators and detainees, contemporary films, the Bush Administration's Torture Memos, and fiction by George Orwell, Franz Kafka, Arthur Koestler, Anne Michaels, and Janette Turner Hospital, Michael Richardson traces the workings of affect, biopower, and aesthetics to re-think literary testimony. Gestures of Testimony gives shape to a mode of affective witnessing, a reaching beyond the page in the writing of torture that reveals violent trauma - even as it embodies its veiling.

Book excerpt: The legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946 –1989) is rich and complicated, triggering controversy, polarizing critics, and providing inspiration for many artists who followed him. Mapplethorpe, one of the most influential figures of his time, today stands as an example to emerging photographers who continue to experiment with the boundaries and concepts of the beautiful. Robert Mapplethorpe: The Photographs offers a timely and rewarding examination of his oeuvre and influence. Drawing from the extraordinary collection jointly acquired in 2011 by the J. Book National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame

Download or read book National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame written by Lisa Schlansker Kolosek and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the rich history, collections, and significance of the only museum in the United States dedicated solely to the art form of dance. The only museum in the United States dedicated entirely to the art form of dance, the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame opened in June 1987, after a short preview season the summer before. This unique and special place celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2017. To commemorate this milestone, Lisa Schlansker Kolosek has created a rich pictorial history tracing not only the museum’s remarkable evolution but the relevance of the museum to the city of Saratoga Springs, New York. Kolosek tells the story of the museum’s origins, from its notable founders’ grand idea to the selection and complete renovation of a historic 1920s bath house as its home. Combining a complete survey of exhibitions presented by the museum and the incredible history of the Hall of Fame, which recognizes dance luminaries across multiple genres, this book offers an in-depth look at the museum’s expansive collection of costumes, visual art, and archival materials. The book also covers the history of the museum’s Lewis A. Swyer Studios and School of the Arts, a leader in dance education. Beautifully illustrated with more than four hundred photographs, this book pays tribute to the immense impact of the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame. “The book illuminates the history of the museum and its founders’ vision for a national repository dedicated to the ethereal art of dance in all its many genres. Readers will grasp the importance of the museum on the Saratoga Springs region along with its impact on the greater dance world both past and present. A lovely journey for all to read, especially the dance aficionado!” — Andrew DeVries, sculptor “Saratoga Springs is a mythical place for dance: Mr. Balanchine parading down the streets with the New York City Ballet performing street theater, tantalizing Saratoga with glimpses of ballets in a freewheeling, improvisational summer parade. And from there it blossomed: the National Museum of Dance was born, giving us the past through exhibitions, providing space for the creative process today, and training the next generation. Dance, the architecture of time, is celebrated by a colorful cast of characters making time flow in tantalizing stories of a one-of-a-kind place.” — Karole Armitage, choreographer “It has been a privilege and a pleasure to walk through and explore the National Museum of Dance. This museum is always ‘in process,’ reinventing itself in an ever-changing world. Museums are the guardians of our culture, keeping the ideas and creations of the human spirit—body and soul—alive. The National Museum of Dance delights in bringing art and history into the present—into the dance of now!” — Paul Kolnik, photographer
