Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an influential American Quaker poet and ardent advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Although he received little formal education, he was an avid reader who studied his father's six books on Quakerism until their teachings became the foundation of his ideology. He was heavily influenced by the doctrines of his religion, particularly its stress on humanitarianism, compassion, and social responsibility. First introduced to poetry by a teacher, Whittier published his first poem in 1826 in William Lloyd Garrison's Newburyport Free Press. In June of 1833, he published the antislavery pamphlet Justice and Expediency, and from there dedicated the next twenty years of his life to the abolitionist cause. He was editor of The National Era; one of the most influential abolitionist newspapers in the North. For the next ten years it featured the best of his writing, both as prose and poetry. His works include: At Sundown (1890), Anti-Slavery Poems, My Summer With Dr. Singletary, Criticism, Historical Papers, Margaret Smith's Journal and The Bridal of Pennacook .

Book excerpt: This book of nature poetry and practices shows us just how easy and enjoyable it can be to tap into the power of nature to calm frazzled minds and lift weary spirits, even in the midst of a city. Author Kai Siedenburg points to two basic keys: finding small but satisfying ways to connect with the Earth in daily life, and making the most of our precious time in wild places. Her insightful and delightful book, Poems of Earth and Spirit: 70 Poems and 40 Practices to Deepen Your Connection with Nature, helps us do both. Through intimate original poems, we experience loving encounters with trees, the gratitude of thirsty plants quenched by rain, and cross-cultural communication with chickadees. We feel what it is like to walk on padded paws, to take wing, to root ourselves in the earth. And through carefully crafted practices, we learn how to cultivate a direct and nourishing connection with nature that will support and sustain us wherever we go. In this high-stress, high-tech world in which so many of us hunger for more authentic connection, Poems of Earth and Spirit illuminates a direct and scenic path to greater joy, meaning, and belonging. This is a book that keeps on giving-and not just to its readers. A portion of the sales raises funds in aid of TreeSisters, a grassroots network that plants over a million trees a year in the tropics. Advance praise for Poems of Earth and Spirit "Beautiful, heart-felt poems for connecting with the Earth." -Joseph Bharat Cornell, author of Sharing Nature and Deep Nature Play "Brimming with insight and imagination... To spend time with this collection is like sitting by a pure mountain stream; we are filled with peace, wonder, and delight. These inspiring poems and simple practices will help you deepen your connection with nature wherever you are." -Mary Reynolds Thompson, author of Embrace Your Inner Wild and Reclaiming the Wild Soul. "What I want from poetry is what Kai gives me, to see anew and to feel deeply, to be reminded of who I am." -Patrice Vecchione, author of Step into Nature: Nurturing Imagination & Spirit in Everyday Life. Book A Christmas Carmen and The Frost Spirit

Download or read book A Christmas Carmen and The Frost Spirit written by John Greenleaf Whittier and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. "A Christmas Carmen" is a poem written by John Greenleaf Whittier. It was first published in 1857 as part of his collection of poems titled "The Panorama and Other Poems." The poem is not to be confused with the more well-known Christmas poem, "The Christmas Carmen," written by Whittier, which is sometimes also referred to as "A Christmas Carmen." In "A Christmas Carmen," Whittier captures the spirit and significance of the Christmas season. The poem reflects on the birth of Jesus Christ and the timeless message of hope, peace, and goodwill to all that Christmas represents. Whittier's verses express the idea that Christmas is a time for reflection, gratitude, and the sharing of love and blessings with others. The poem portrays the traditional nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, and the newborn Jesus in the manger. It emphasizes the humility and simplicity of the setting in contrast to the grandeur and opulence that can sometimes overshadow the true meaning of Christmas. Whittier encourages his readers to embrace the simplicity and sincerity of the season. Throughout the poem, there is a sense of reverence and an acknowledgment of the universal significance of Christ's birth, transcending cultural and religious boundaries. "A Christmas Carmen" by John Greenleaf Whittier serves as a reminder of the core values of love, compassion, and faith that are associated with the holiday, making it a timeless and cherished piece of Christmas literature. 2. "The Frost Spirit" is indeed a poem written by John Greenleaf Whittier. It is a nature poem that captures the beauty and harshness of winter, with a particular focus on the frost and its effects on the landscape. The poem was published in 1832 and reflects the Romantic literary tradition of appreciating the natural world. In "The Frost Spirit," Whittier personifies the frost as a spirit or deity that transforms the landscape into a winter wonderland. The poem describes the frost's ability to adorn the trees and fields with a delicate layer of ice crystals, making them sparkle and shimmer in the cold winter air. Whittier's words evoke a sense of enchantment and tranquility in the midst of the winter chill. The poem also underscores the contrast between the beauty of the frost-covered landscape and the hardships it can bring to those living in the countryside. It highlights the idea that while winter can be harsh and unforgiving, there is also a serene and magical aspect to it that is worth appreciating. Overall, "The Frost Spirit" by John Greenleaf Whittier is a lyrical and evocative poem that celebrates the winter season, emphasizing the delicate and enchanting qualities of frost and its impact on the natural world.
