Book The Star Captains Frigate Command in the Napoleonic Wars

Download or read book The Star Captains Frigate Command in the Napoleonic Wars written by Tom Wareham and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horatio Hornblower, Jack Aubrey - officers of Nelson's navy have long been romanticised in fiction. The officer corps of the Royal Navy during the long wars of 1793-1815 was one of the most successful military cadres in history, winning the vast majority of its battles, and often in the face of daunting odds. The most glamorous and high-profile group were undoubtedly the frigate captains - often portrayed as the cream of their profession. Because independent action and rugged individualism were essential to their stories, it is not surprising that naval novelists did much to foster this image. But is it true? This is the first book to look at the nature of frigate command, to ask important questions about how and why such officers were appointed, what was expected of them, and how they were rewarded. The picture that emerges is one of conscious selection and 'fast-track' promotion - not merely young men serving an apprenticeship before moving on to the command of a battleship, but a real elite with specific and highly prized skills. For the first time it reveals that the romanticised image portrayed in the novels of C S Forester and Patrick O'Brian was indeed close to the truth - frigate captains were outstanding officers, whose careers followed separate paths from their less talented contemporaries. The Star Captains is a major contribution to the broader understanding of the workings of Nelson's navy and brings to the fore previously neglected heroes of the Golden Age of Sail. Praise for The Star Captains 'Thoroughly recommended' - Naval Review '...wide-ranging, well written and very useful survey of the operational careers of commanders of the vitally important lower-rated RN warships of the age of sail, such as Thomas Cochrane, William Hoste, George Mundy and their brother officers; highly recommended.' - britishnavalhistory.com Tom Wareham has worked as a curator at London's Museum of Docklands and has written and lectured on the subject of frigate command. In the past he has undertaken work for the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, and has contributed as adviser to the BBC's Timewatch programme on Myths of Nelson's Navy. This, his first book, is based on the research undertaken some years ago for his PhD thesis.

Book British Frigate vs French Frigate

Download or read book British Frigate vs French Frigate written by Mark Lardas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Age of Fighting Sail (1650–1820), ambitious officers of the navies of many nations sought command of a frigate. Speedy, nimble and formidably armed, frigates often operated independently, unlike the larger ships of the line. Legendary sailors such as Edward Pellew and Charles-Alexandre Léon Durand, Comte de Linoise, found that commanding such a ship offered numerous opportunities for wealth. In this book, four representative frigate duels are examined: first, a battle fought between two closely matched ships (HMS Nymphe (36) vs La Cléopâtre (32); second, a victory won by an inferior British frigate over a superior French frigate (HMS Pallas (32) vs Minerve (40); third, a victory – the only one – by an inferior French frigate over a superior British frigate (HMS Ambuscade (32) vs Baïonnaise (24), and fourth, victory of a superior British frigate over an inferior French frigate (HMS Indefatigable (44) of Hornblower fame vs La Virginie (40). Featuring specially commissioned artwork and offering expert analysis, this study provides a vivid account of the bloody combats fought by the most romantic warship of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era – the frigate.

Book Frigates of the Napoleonic Wars

Download or read book Frigates of the Napoleonic Wars written by Robert Gardiner and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2000 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every naval officer, in fiction or reality, the frigate was the ideal and much sought-after command. As dashing as a modern destroyer, the frigate offered the excitement of independent service, and the prospect of glorious single-ship engagements as well as a possible fortune to be made in prize money. Their actions have been the stuff of history and sea fiction for generations, but the ships themselves are hardly documented at all. This book seeks to redress the balance and describe the design, construction, armament and fitting of individual classes; to look at the factors that influenced their development, and to analyse the way in which frigates were employed in the many roles they were expected to perform.

Book Frigate Commander

Download or read book Frigate Commander written by Tom Wareham and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2004-09-19 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The naval historian presents the thrilling true story of a Royal Navy officer’s frigate command in the tumultuous late 18th and early 19th centuries. Based on the private journals of Admiral Sir Graham Moore, Frigate Commander recounts his experiences as a Lieutenant and then Captain during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Moore's journal gives a detailed account of life as a serving naval officer, revealing the unique problems of managing a frigate crew, maintaining discipline and turning his ship into an efficient man of war. Moore was one of the Royal Navy's star captains, serving continuously as a frigate commander between 1793 and 1804. His early career took him to Newfoundland before serving with Sir William Sidney Smith's squadron on the north coast of France. Moore was present during the Naval Mutiny at Spithead in 1797, and helped to destroy the French fleet off Ireland in 1798. His most famous action occurred in September 1804, when his squadron captured a Spanish frigate squadron carrying a fortune in treasure. The following year his frigate, HMS Indefatigable, was involved in the opening of the Trafalgar Campaign.

Book Warships of the Napoleonic Era

Download or read book Warships of the Napoleonic Era written by Robert Gardiner and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of British illustrations of their ships and ships they captured from 1793 to 1815, with informative text, by the author of The Sailing Frigate. Between 1793 and 1815, two decades of unrelenting naval warfare raised the sailing man-of-war to the zenith of its effectiveness as a weapon of war. Every significant sea power was involved in this conflict, and at some point virtually all of them were arrayed against Great Britain. Many enemy warships were captured in battle, making them of interest to British artists, engravers, and printmakers, while the Admiralty ordered accurate draughts to be made of many of these prizes. Consequently, for this era the ships of all navies, not just British, are illustrated by an unprecedented variety of paintings, drawings, models, or plans. Warships of the Napoleonic Era reproduces many of the best (and least familiar) images of the ships, chosen for their accuracy, detail, and sheer visual power in an extra-large format that does full justice to the images themselves. These are backed by an authoritative text that looks at how the ships were used by the different navies, and explains the function and development of the apparently bewildering array of rates and types. This is a book that anyone with an interest in wooden warships will find both enlightening and a pleasure to peruse.

Book A Sailor of King George

Download or read book A Sailor of King George written by Frederick Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adventures of an officer of Nelson's navy These are the riveting recollections of an officer of the Royal Navy-Nelson's navy-in the first years of the nineteenth century, through the long wars with Britain's ancient enemy Spain and the France of the Revolution, Consulate and of the newly crowned Emperor Napoleon. Hoffman was a seaman who could inspire aspects of the Hornblower character. Hoffman's was a naval career full of incident and action. Joining the navy in 1793 he served in HMS Blonde and HMS Hannibal in action off Martinique and in the Channel. He was engaged in eighteen fierce boat actions before being promoted to lieutenant of HMS Volage where he saw further action against privateers off Cuba. After serving on the Monitor he was posted to the famous HMS Tonnant and it was aboard her that fought at Trafalgar-the greatest sea battle of the age. This remarkable sailor's career continued on many ships voyages and actions too numerous to recount here. It is enough to remark that everyone interested in the Royal Navy during the great days of sail will find much pleasure within these pages.
