Tracing the gradual evolution of patriarchy and phallocentrism in Western society, Slipp examines the stereotyped attitudes toward women that were taken for granted in Victorian culture and strongly influenced Freud's thinking on feminine psychology. Of even greater importance was Freud's relationship with his mother who emotionally abandoned him, the loss of his nanny, and the death of his brother Julius - all before the age of three. These losses occurred during the separation-individuation phase, disrupting the normal differentiation from his mother and consolidation of his gender identity. Slipp examines not only Freud's preoedipal but also the continuing postoedipal conflicts with his mother from both an object relations and family therapy perspective. He shows how Freud's unconscious ambivalence toward his mother influenced his personal relationships with women and shaped his theory of child development. Freud emphasized the role of the father and the oedipal period, while excluding the mother and the preoedipal and postoedipal periods. Not limited to one perspective, The Freudian Mystique analyzes how the entire contextual framework of his family relations, anti-Semitism, politics, economics, science, and culture affected Freud's work in feminine psychology. The book not only looks backward but also looks forward to formulating a modern biopsychosocial framework for female gender development.

In each lineage Hughes discerns an evolutionary narrative: Deutsch tells a story of retrogression; Erikson names his epigenesis, and Gilligan continues in that vein; Horney's discussion recalls sexual selection; Stoller's and Chodorow's theorizing brings artificial selection to mind; and finally in Klein's work Hughes sees a story of natural selection and adds to it her own notion of multiple gender identities.

Critiques started early with Melanie Klein declaring an earlier date for infant trauma than Freud's Oedipal theory did. Of late, work by Daniel Stern, John Bowlby, Margaret Mahler and Lawrence Kohlberg, all offer different accounts. Such research moved psychology beyond the Oedipal framework. Freud also left confusion over the feminine, of which he likened it to an obfuscated, "Dark Continent." Moreover, Freud left us with identity confusion related to two mothers and two fathers, broadly recorded and also encoded in his last book, 'Moses and Monotheism'. Some of his sexual theories can be traced to Albert Moll, one of a number involved in such studies at the time. Nevertheless, a number of Freudians meeting at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society in his own home on Wednesdays to discuss Freudian notions had some such as, C.G. Jung and Alfred Adler, leaving as 'discontents' and forging separate psychological disciplines. Paradoxically they supported Freud's idea that psychoanalysis / psychology should become an international affair as their ideas also spread. Therefore, Freud, arguably, remains as a father of modern psychology and is still worthy of further thought.

This thought-provoking and incisive work shows how Ferenczi filled the gaps left open in Freud’s system and proved to be a useful example for examining how such gaps are transmitted from one mind to another. The first of three parts explores how the mind of the child was viewed prior to Freud, what events led Freud to formulate and later abandon his theory of actual trauma, and why Freud turned to the phylogenetic past. Bonomi delves deeper into Freud’s self-analysis in part two and reexamines the possible reasons that led Freud to discard the impact and effects of trauma. The final part explores the interpersonal effects of Freud’s self-dissection dream, arguing that Ferenczi managed to dream aspects of Freud’s self-dissection dream on various occasions, which helped him to incorporate a part of Freud’s psyche that Freud had himself failed to integrate.
