Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For beginning aquatic fancier looking to start out right with fish, Freshwater Aquariums by David Alderton is the ideal primer. A vertebrate that breathe primarily by means of gills and swim by means of fins is the author’s lead-in to the first chapter called “What are Fish?” Alderton builds the reader’s confidence by providing solid information about what fish are anatomically speaking, how they evolved, how they breathe, how they move, where they live, and how they behave. The new fancier’s aquarium begins in chapter two with instructions on setting up the tank, including selecting the right size, figuring out how many fish, setting the tank, equipment, substrate, heating, lighting, filtrations, plants, water chemistry, assembly, and more. Choosing the freshwater fishes that appeal to the reader is the subject of “Introducing the Categories of Fish,” which schools readers in seven categories: Cyprinids (e.g., goldfish, minnows, and barbs), Characins (e.g., tetras), Cichlids (e.g., oscars, angelfish, and discus), Anabantoids (gouramis, bettas/Siamese fighting fish, and paradise fish), Toothcarps (guppies, swordtails, platies, black mollies, and killifish), Catfish, and others (loaches and Chinese algae eaters). The purchasing, maintenance, and feeding of fish are described in considerable details, and the author gives a basic overview of breeding and keeping fish healthy as well. Resources, glossary, and index conclude the book.

This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Beneath the Waters, or the Aquarium in America In a lecture given by Mr. Vvarriugtou before the Royal Institution of Great Britain, on the 27th of March, 1857, that gentleman gives us a history of the Aquarium, with the reasons that led him to think of establishing such a collection, in which the animal and vegetable existences would be so balanced that the water should not need' changing. After considerable trouble and persevering study, and several accidents that would have discouraged many men, he succeeded; and, in a paper read in the mouth of March, 1850, before the Chemical Society of London, he gave to the world an account of his success. His first experiments were with fresh-water plants and animals, and on the complete success of the tanks containing these, he commenced Operations with marine objects. In this branch, he has been more successful than any other naturalist that has given the results of his experience with the Aquarium. To the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Aquarium and Water Cabinet, or Practical Instructions on the Formation, Stocking, and Management, in All Seasons, of Collections of Fresh Water and Marine Life Every day adds to the popularity of the but every day does not add to the accuracyof the published descriptions of it, or the perspicuity of the directions everywhere given for its formation and maintenance. Lately the periodical press has teemed with essays on the subject; but it does not require a very close scrutiny for the practical man to discern that a majority of such papers express the enthusiasm rather than the knowledge of their authors - a few weeks' management of a tank seeming to be considered a sufficient qualification for the expounding of its philosophy, though it demands an ao quaintance with the minutest details of the most refined departments of botany and zoology to do anything like justice to it. I have done my best to explain and illustrate the whole rationale of marine and fresh-water tanks in my lately published work, Rustic Adornments for Homes of Taste. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aquarium HE New York Aquarium, at the southern extremity of Manhattan Island, looking out across the harbor, was originally built as a fort with walls eight feet thick, and within the narrow compass of these walls it has been difficult to arrange the proper tanks, piping, etc., for a big public aquarium. The building has been open as a public aquarium since 1896, and in 1902 came under the management of the New York Zoological Society. Since 1902, Dr. Charles H. Townsend has been director, and there have been many changes made, notable improvements in light ing and ventilation, and the introduction of a large storage tank for pure sea water, as the impure, somewhat brackish harbor water, pumped through a well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aquarium, Vol. 3: April, 1895 This system, in addition, enables to supply to the specimens the different densities of seasoned sea-water, and also allows control of the temperature of same. The utter weakness of the old system was quite apparent during our visit for the Bay being full of ice, the temper ature of the water in the tanks was down almost to freezing. To keep tropical fishes or plants in such water is out of the question. But this might easily be corrected, as there is a cellar under the old guard-room where stor age tanks might be placed. Not quite so easy, however, would it be to recon struct some of the tanks in order to give greater depth to them, or to other wise change their shape to enable effect ive decorations to show the peculiar characteristics of the different speci mens.
