Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and Napoleon NO historian believes that history repeats itself. Yet, between different ages there are frequently striking analogies and resemblances. It is prob lems that repeat themselves, not the conditions which determine their solution. One of these problems, recurrent in European annals, is that of the maintenance of a certain balance of power among the various nations as essential to their freedom, the maintenance of a situation to which they are accustomed and which-they have found tolerable, a change in which would be prejudicial or dangerous to their peace and safety. Several times in modern history this balance has been threatened and Europe has purchased immunity from servitude by freely giving its life blood that life might remain and might be worth living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Year One: A Page of the French Revolution To do so I have gone entirely to French writ ers and, above all, to French writers of the period; While making use principally, and wher ever it has been possible, of the records left he hind by those Who had lain in deadly peril and who, after having escaped by the mercy of heaven, wrote careful memoirs and diaries of their trials and tribulations. Every private family of any note in France is full of such records as these, to say nothing of the vast stores of literature on the subject with which the State libraries and museums are filled; and to more than one French family I am indebted not only for a sight of some of these treasures but, also, for many extracts willingly made and forwarded to me. Book The History of the French Revolution Vol 3 of 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the French Revolution Vol 3 of 5 Classic Reprint written by Louis Adolphe Thiers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 5 An order of arrest was issued by the commune against the two ministers Lebrun and Clavieres, dismissed after the 2nd of June. Lebrun found means to evade it. The same measure was taken against Roland, who had been removed from office on the 21st of January, and begged in vain to be permitted to render his accounts. He escaped the search made for him by the commune, and concealed himself at Rouen. Madame Roland, against whom also proceedings were instituted, had no other anxiety than that of favouring the escape of her husband; then, committing her daughter to the care of a trusty friend, she surrendered with noble indifference to the committee of her section, and was thrown into prison with a multitude of other victims of the 31st of May. Great was the joy at the Jacobins. Its members congratulated themselves on the energy of the people, on their late admirable conduct, and on the removal of all those obstacles which the right side had not ceased to oppose to the progress of the Revolution. According to the custom after all great events, they agreed upon the manner in which the last insurrection should be represented. "The people," said Robespierre, "have confounded all their calumniators by their conduct. Eighty thousand men have been under arms for nearly a week, yet no property has been violated, not a drop of blood has been spilled, and they have thus proved whether it was their aim, as it has been alleged, to profit by the disorder for the commission of murder and plunder. Their insurrection was spontaneous, because it was the effect of the general conviction; and the Mountain itself, weak and astonished at this movement, has proved that it did not concur to produce it. Thus this insurrection has been wholly moral and wholly popular." This was at once giving a favourable colour to the insurrection, addressing an indirect censure to the Mountain, which had shown some hesitation on the 2nd of June, repelling the charge of conspiracy preferred against the leaders of the left side, and agreeably flattering the popular party, which had behaved so well and done every thing of itself. Book Lectures on the French Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the French Revolution Classic Reprint written by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the French Revolution The revenue of France was near twenty millions when Lewis XVI., finding it inadequate, called upon the nation for supply. In a Single lifetime it rose to far more than one hundred millions, while the national income grew still more rapidly; and this increase was wrought by a class to whom the ancient monarchy denied its best rewards, and whom it deprived of power in the country they enriched. As their industry effected change in the distribution of property, and wealth ceased to be the prerogative of a few, the excluded majority perceived that their disabilities rested on no foundation of right and justice, and were unsupported by reasons Of State. They proposed that the prizes in the Government, the Army, and the Church should be given to merit among the active and necessary portion of the people, and that no privilege injurious to them should be reserved for the unprofitable minority. Being nearly an hundred to one, they deemed that they were virtually the substance of the nation, and they claimed to govern themselves with a power proportioned to their numbers. They demanded that the State should be reformed, that the ruler should be their agent, not their master. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The French Revolution and the English Novel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The French Revolution and the English Novel Classic Reprint written by Allene Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution and the English Novel This study in the tendenz novel was begun with the idea of paralleling Dr. Hancock's book, The French Revolution and the English Poets, in furnishing detailed consideration of a literary form which Professor Dowden's general treatment of the period necessarily presents in outline merely. It is evident, however, that the Revolutionary poets and the Revolutionary novelists must rest their claims to our interest on different grounds. A discussion of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, and Shelley needs no justification. But it must be confessed that the novelists we are about to consider can not escape the condemnation of mediocrity. There is scarcely one of them whose work has lived through the intervening century. What, then, shall be our apology for invading their well-merited obscurity? There are two distinct uses of the historical methods in the study of literature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eve of the French Revolution The larger number of people, who had been living quietly in the existing order, were amused and interested. The attacks of the Philosophers seemed to them just in many cases, the reasoning conclusive. But in their hearts they could not believe in the reality and importance of the assault. Some of those most interested in keeping the world as it was, honestly or frivolously joined in the cry for reform and for destruction. Book The Revolutionary Spirit Preceding the French Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revolutionary Spirit Preceding the French Revolution Classic Reprint written by Félix Rocquain and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolutionary Spirit Preceding the French Revolution Under these circumstances, it Should be needless to com mend the scientific study of the phenomena of the revolu tionary epoch to all thoughtful men. Histories of the French Revolution abound but too many of them are elaborate pleadings for one or other of the parties concerned in the struggle, not without an eye to the illustration and en forcement of the writer's own principles or they are vivid pictures drawn by literary artists, which may enable the reader to see, but do not greatly help him to understand, the Revolution. Most of us, however, can be trusted to bring a goodly store of both partizanship and imagination to the study of the past; what most lack is the scientific temper which aims only at accuracy in matters of fact, and logical impartiality in drawing conclusions therefrom.
