Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is history rolled out in pictures and color with a visit to the French Legation in East Austin. The French legation is a gorgeous location on Robertson Hill in East Austin; it is the oldest house in Austin. The house is located high on a hill overlooking the rest of East Austin and down town. The structure is the first structure ever built by a foreign country on Texas land. When we went to visit the museum we had a very well prepared guide, a young UT student. Anna told us the story of the French legation. The French Legation has beautiful gardens... and is the ideal place for a wedding. The French's liaison (eccentric Jean Pierre Isidore Dubois) to the Republic of Texas built the house. The Reason he built the house was simply because of the high cost of staying in Bullocks Inn and renting a wood log cabin for $500. Du Bois hated the rugged Texan culture and felt a lot more at home in the luxury of Parisian high society of Louisiana. Du Bois is said to have left Texas for good after the Pig War forever in 1841. He left his new "mansion" in the care of his butler. Later the house became the property of several others; Dr. Robertson sold the property in 1949 to the state of Texas.
