Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith, Freedom, and the Future It is not a new issue. It is one that is most keenly felt indeed in the Churches that are known as the Free Churches; but just because they are Churches it is not confined to them, but it is active wherever there is real life in any Church. It ought to be viewed in that great context of a whole Church facing the whole world. Its historic bearings ought to be taken. And the Free Churches especially ought to realise that it is an old legacy for them, and indeed an original entail. For English Dissent did not arise out of the Reformation directly or alone. It arose equally out of the dissenters of the Reformation - the Anabaptists, or however they may be called. And the great issue between the Reformers and the Anabaptists was that which rages so keenly now. It was the issue between a final Word and a free Spirit. Then he went into the tower and rang the first bell. I suppose this bell is designed to hurry housewives with their morning work, and to admonish the men that they incline their hearts to a Spiritual disposition. This done, the sexton set Open the doors of the pews, swept out the squire's and the rector's in the chancel, dusted the cushions of the pulpit (the reading-desk at this time was not used), Opened the Clasps of the great Bible, and swept down the aisle: as he had done Sunday after Sunday for fifty years. When he had thus made the church ready for the day's service, he went into the vestry, which had only been used Since the establishment of the Commonwealth for the registers Of birth, death, and marriage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Faith and Freedom in the Last Two Centuries To save the reader from the distraction of multi tudinous notes I have restricted the references to three types of passages (1) where the source was not obvious from the context; (2) where in debtedness was not elsewhere acknowledged; (3) where the use is controversial. My obligations to other students of the subject are fully set forth in the book itself, but in the first half of Lecture VIII., owing to the vastness of the subject, I have had to fill up with their aid larger gaps in my own first hand knowledge than elsewhere. "I shall merely enumerate a few of the most common of these feel-ings that present obstacles to the pursuit or propagation of truth: Aversion to doubt; desire of a supposed happy medium; the love of system; the dread of the character of inconsistency; the love of novelty; the dread of innovation; undue deference to human authority; the love of approbation, and the dread of censure; regard to seeming expediency." - Whately's Annotations on Bacon's Essay on Truth, page 10. "The principles on which I have taught: First. The establishment of positive truth, instead of the negative destruction of error. Secondly. That truth is made up of two opposite propositions, and not found in a via media between the two. Thirdly. That spiritual truth is discerned by the spirit, instead of intellectually in propositions; and, therefore, Truth should be taught suggestively, not dogmatically. Fourthly. That belief in the Human character of Christ's Humanity must be antecedent to belief in His Divine origin. Fifthly. That Christianity, as its teachers should, works from the inward to the outward, and not vice versa. Sixthly. The soul of goodness in things evil." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith and Free Press, Vol. 13: Published Monthly in the Interest of the Historic Faith and Freedom of Southern Baptists; April 1957 Whether or not one accepts Machen's ex planation of these passages of Scripture, what he has thus written should make it pla1n enough that one can be thoroughly committed to the complete authority of the Scripture - as Machen certainly was - and agree with Mc Dowell in saying that Paul made use of tra ditions concerning ]esus. It is the Opinion of this reviewer that efforts that are made to prove departure from ortho doxy by referring to certain Southern Baptist writings usually center upon writings that can not be made to disclose such a verdict; there are certain writings, 1 however, that could profitably be considered in this connection. Book Hopes for English Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hopes for English Religion Classic Reprint written by John Neville Figgis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hopes for English Religion WE are beginning the fourth year Of the war; our leaders have been taking stock and clearly stating its Objects. Many statements Of these are made. Some Of them concern diplomatic arrangements or legal topics. With these we are not concerned here; what we are concerned with is the conflict between principles. The war, we have been told, is a war Of ideals, and this is in the main true. The conflict is between the soul Of the English and the soul Of the Prus sian. Our danger is that in conquering the body Of our enemy we shall be inspired with his spirit. Last week Mr. Asquith defined the meaning Of the struggle as the conflict between ideals Of freedom and Of force. SO far as we are assured that freedom is the end for which we are fighting, we know that our aim is spiritual. Faith in freedom implies faith in the spiritual nature Of man. Prussia in its Characteristic incarnation, Bismarck, always scouted the ideal Of freedom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Faith and Freedom written by Michah Gottlieb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent renewal of the faith-reason debate has focused attention on earlier episodes in its history. One of its memorable highlights occurred during the Enlightenment, with the outbreak of the "Pantheism Controversy" between the eighteenth century Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn and the Christian Counter-Enlightenment thinker Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi. While Mendelssohn argued that reason confirmed belief in a providential God and in an immortal soul, Jacobi claimed that its consistent application led ineluctably to atheism and fatalism. At present, there are two leading interpretations of Moses Mendelssohn's thought. One casts him as a Jewish traditionalist who draws on German philosophy to support his premodern Jewish beliefs, while the other portrays him as a secret Deist who seeks to encourage his fellow Jews to integrate into German society and so disingenuously defends Judaism to avoid arousing their opposition. By exploring the Pantheism Controversy and Mendelssohn's relation to his two greatest Jewish philosophical predecessors, the medieval Rabbi Moses Maimonides and the seventeenth century heretic Baruch Spinoza, Michah Gottlieb presents a new reading of Mendelssohn arguing that he defends Jewish religious concepts sincerely, but gives them a humanistic interpretation appropriate to life in a free, diverse modern society. Gottlieb argues that the faith-reason debate is best understood not primarily as an argument about metaphysical questions, such as whether or not God exists, but rather as a contest between two competing conceptions of human dignity and freedom. Mendelssohn, Gottlieb contends, gives expression to a humanistic religious perspective worthy of renewed consideration today.

Book The Emancipation of Faith Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Emancipation of Faith Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by H. E. Schedel and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emancipation of Faith, Vol. 1 The "Constitutionel" of the 9th of August, 1856, contained a short article thus worded: "A Swiss journal says that on Monday, 28th of July, there was discovered on Mount Pilate the corpse of a stranger, who, it appears, met with his death by falling from a rock. A visiting card found on him bore the name of Henri Schedel. A roll of gold of one thousand francs was in one of his pockets." The journals are good for something, it cannot be denied; they collect from all parts news joyful or heart-rending; they register in their impassible columns events which pierce many a heart as with a dagger, - nevertheless, we must thank them for this useful cruelty; for it is better to know than to ignore; certainty is always preferable to doubt; we weep over the memory of the Dead, when we might otherwise have accused the absent one of forgetfulness, perhaps of ingratitude. Thus, this notice of the "Constitutionel," carelessly thrown to the public, went direct to the home of a family and of friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic of God: An Institute of Theology The being of God is the precedent and the postulate of the thought of God. It is the ground in man of his conscious life. From the beginning, and with the growth of the human consciousness, there is the consciousness of the being of God, and of a relation to God. Man is conscious of the being of the external world, and lives and acts in this consciousness, and the being of the external world so comes to be apprehended by him. And, further, man is conscious of the being of God, and lives and acts in this consciousness, and the reality of the being of God so comes to him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Freedom: The Baird Lecture for 1913 Had the fashion of dedications still prevailed, I should have like to associate this book with the name of the Baird Trustees, by whose most generous courtesy a new precedent was created, and one from outside the borders of the Church of Scotland was for the first time invited to deliver lectures on this distinguished foundation. That act was much more than a personal compliment, it was a token of goodwill to my Church, and as such it was applauded in many quarters without regard to the individual selected. For this reason, I might have been pardoned if I had dedicated the book - unworthy as it is of such promotion - to that Church of Scotland which is to be, in which the ideals and the virtues of long sundered Churches shall, in God's mercy, finally be brought together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and Advance: Discussions of Christian Progress We are hearing a great deal in these days about re-construction but there must first be re-consideration. The foundations must be re-investigated and the char acter of the material to be used for the structure of Christian character must be carefully examined. Otherwise we may find ourselves in the position of the man in the parable Who built on the sand. The Chris tian Faith furnishes a system of thought and a rule of life, and both are based on a vital Christian ex perience. Happy the preacher' who expounds this Faith in terms of the whole of life. He it is who stands upon his watch tower and clearly sees the course of events, with a deepening conviction of the sufficiency of the Everlasting Gospel, to meet every crisis and condition.
