I might have referred to a million and a half in Washington and Oregon. Or referring to the mineral lands, I mention two thousand acres Of coal. I might have told another story of fifty thousand acres, or yet an other of three hundred thousand acres of gold and Silver lands. When I narrate the Shooting Of a man at the head Of a coal Shaft, the stealing Of Government timber by the half million dollars a year through the hatchet trick, or the theft Of two thousand acres by dummies, I am stating facts known to every Westerner out on the Spot. Book excerpt: The Freebooters of the Wilderness By Agnes Christina Laut The Freebooters of the Wilderness By Agnes Christina Laut The Freebooters of the Wilderness By Agnes Christina Laut All through the sixteenth century the South Seas were regarded as a mysterious wonderworld, whence Spain drew unlimited wealth of gold and silver bullion, of pearls and precious stones. Spain had declared the Pacific 'a closed sea' to the rest of the world. But in 1567 it happened that Sir John Hawkins, an English mariner, was cruising in the Gulf of Mexico, when a terrific squall, as he said, drove his ships landward to Vera Cruz, and he sent a messenger to the Spanish viceroy there asking permission to dock and repair his battered vessels. Book excerpt: On the inner side, the Ridge dropped to an Alpine meadow that billowed up another slope through mossed forests to the snow line of the Holy Cross Mountains. What the girl saw was a sylvan world of spruce, then the dark green pointed larches where the jubilant rivers rioted down from the snow. What the man saw was--a Challenge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wilderness On another wall hung a framed memorial card of the immortal Nelson; and on a little table in a corner stood the bellman's tool of trade, his big brass bell, placed there at the request of the dying man by the hands of Cherry, and daily polished. The window of the little room was Open, so that the scent of verbena and rosemary could enter, and through it also came the sounds of the outer work-a-day world, with which henceforth he would have nothing in common. The firewood man came down the narrow street, roared, and went on; the sweep hooted his melancholy way past the house; and John Chinaman, dumping his pendulous baskets at the garden gate, offered his vegetables for sale. Then at the top of the street the Colonel appeared, no longer in uniform, but still trim and debonair, tap-hatted, gloved, carrying his malacca cane as if it were a sword. The scant grey hair with its exact back parting, the drooping yellow-grey moustache, the wrinkled skin of his face told a tale of many years; yet he was as straight as a reed, and walked with the suggestion of a swagger, antedated. Arriving at the gate he poked the Chinaman's obstruct ing baskets with an air of out of the way, rascal! In his fine handling of the clouded cane. John hastened to depart, leaving Cherry still undecided between cabbage - a vegetable without character, but cheap - and green peas, more appetizing, but making a heavier demand on the housewife's purse. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waiting in the Wilderness This grass plot was a wilderness meeting place for wild folks. -half a dozen wild-life trails crossed it or terminated in it. There were numberless air routes to and through it traversed by bats, butterflies, and birds. Often the wild life ceased to search for food, played their primitive games with enthusiasm, and sometimes they had battles or courtships. Often I came back to this place to note the Changes in the flowers or the growth of the birds in the neighbourhood nests. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much neglected field of study has been opened by the research of the author into the history of the Christian church from its apostolic origins to the close of the eighteenth century. Taking as his thesis the prominence given to the Church in the Wilderness in Bible prophecy, and the fact that “‘the Church in the Wilderness,’ and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ,” he has spent years developing this subject. In its present form, Truth Triumphant represents much arduous research in the libraries of Europe as well as in America. Excellent ancient sources are most difficult to obtain, but the author has been successful in gaining access to many of them. To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth.
