This book was released on 2014-09-14 with total page 983 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rivals the major systematic theologies of this century."--Baptist History and Heritage Journal, July 1996"One of the characteristics of Garrett's system that needs especially to be noted is its balanced, judicious, and nearly invariably objective presentation of materials. While holding true to the teachings of his own Baptist faith, Garrett so carefully and judiciously presents alternatives . . . that teachers and students from other confessional and denominational positions will find his work instructive."--Consensus, 1997"If one is searching for an extensive exposition of the biblical foundations and historical developments of the various loci of systematic theology, there is no more complete presentation in a relatively short work than this . . . Pastors will especially find this feature to be a real help in teaching theology . . . [It is] an indispensable contribution to the task of systematic theology."--Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, September 1999"Many students and pastors will find all they need here, and will in addition be helped to relate their knowledge to recent developments in the theological world."--The Churchman: A Journal of Anglican Theology, 1991"A gold mine of helpful material."--The Christian Century, May 29-June 5, 1991"No book that I know is more loaded with biblical and theological facts than this one. The prodigious research that must have gone into the preparation of this volume is truly mind-boggling."--Faith and Mission, Fall 1991"Garrett has provided a massive and scholarly systematic theology from a thoroughly conservative and comprehensive viewpoint. The work is well documented in both biblical and historical scholarship and will prove to be a classic."--William Hendrickson, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"One of the most comprehensive, concise books of its type available; it should receive wide use in the classroom and in the study."--Robert H. Culpepper, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Download or read book Strangers and Pilgrims written by Catherine A. Brekus and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Meuse Clay, who barely escaped a public whipping in the 1760s for preaching without a license; "Old Elizabeth," an ex-slave who courageously traveled to the South to preach against slavery in the early nineteenth century; Harriet Livermore, who spoke in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844--these are just a few of the extraordinary women profiled in this, the first comprehensive history of female preaching in early America. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Brekus examines the lives of more than a hundred female preachers--both white and African American--who crisscrossed the country between 1740 and 1845. Outspoken, visionary, and sometimes contentious, these women stepped into the pulpit long before twentieth-century battles over female ordination began. They were charismatic, popular preachers, who spoke to hundreds and even thousands of people at camp and revival meetings, and yet with but a few notable exceptions--such as Sojourner Truth--these women have essentially vanished from our history. Recovering their stories, Brekus shows, forces us to rethink many of our common assumptions about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American culture.

Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between the conversion theology popularized by Charles Grandison Finney and the theological drift of Baptists in the South from Calvinism to Arminianism. It begins with a survey of the historical evidence of the Calvinistic roots of Baptists in the South by way of a brief overview of Baptist origins in England, followed by an overview of Baptist life in America, including the founding of the first Baptist church in the colonies in the seventeenth century, developments in Baptist soteriology in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and concluding with trends that emerged in the twentieth century. Next, an overview of the traditional or Calvinistic Baptist view of conversion that was the majority view prior to the mid-nineteenth century, which provides a brief contrast of the two predominant views held by evangelicals, Arminianism and Calvinism, and demonstrates how uncommon the views of conversion popularized in the mid to late nineteenth century had been previously. The remainder of the book focuses on the conversion theology of Finney and the opposition from his contemporaries by analyzing Finney's rejection of reformed orthodoxy and the use of the means of grace, his views that revival and conversion are of human rather than divine origin, his departure from the Edwardsean theological tradition he had inherited, his Pelagian and semi-Pelagian tendencies, his conflation of backsliders with false professors, and the fact that he propagates and popularizes existing error rather than inventing new a theology or methodology. Next is a survey of the effects of Finney's theology on Southern Baptists and evangelicalism as a whole under the following headings: Finney's polemical rewriting of history and its impact on subsequent generations, the effects of revivalism, and the specific effects of Finney's theology on Baptists, the understanding of God and His role in conversion, and church practice. The book wraps up with a summary of the lingering effects of Finney's Pelagian theology on the church today, which concludes that Finney's influence on Baptists in the South was part of the theological shift from their Calvinistic roots to Arminianism as the dominant theology, and ends with practical and pastoral applications for the church today.
