Book Free Movement of Persons within the European Community

Download or read book Free Movement of Persons within the European Community written by A. Pieter Van der Mei and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the extent to which European Community law confers upon individuals the right to gain access to public services in other Member States. Are European citizens and third country nationals who have moved to other Member States entitled to claim minimum subsistence benefits,to receive medical care or to be admitted to education? Does Community law provide for a freedom of movement for patients, students and persons in need of social welfare benefits? If so, to what extent does Community law have regard for the Member States' fears for, and concerns about, welfare tourism? Besides addressing numerous detailed questions on the precise degree to which Community law allows for cross-border access to public services, the author analyses how Community law, and the Court of Justice in particular, have sought to reconcile the Community's objectives of realising freedom of movement and ensuring equality of treatment with the need to develop and maintain adequate social services within the Community. In addition, the book contains a detailed analysis of United States constitutional law on cross-border access to public services, exploring the question whether the European Community can possibly learn from the American experience.

Book Assuring the Quality of Health Care in the European Union

Download or read book Assuring the Quality of Health Care in the European Union written by Helena Legido-Quigley and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2008 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have always travelled within Europe for work and leisure, although never before with the current intensity. Now, however, they are travelling for many other reasons, including the quest for key services such as health care. Whatever the reason for travelling, one question they ask is "If I fall ill, will the health care I receive be of a high standard?" This book examines, for the first time, the systems that have been put in place in all of the European Union's 27 Member States. The picture it paints is mixed. Some have well developed systems, setting standards based on the best available evidence, monitoring the care provided, and taking action where it falls short. Others need to overcome significant obstacles.

Book The European Union and Health Services

Download or read book The European Union and Health Services written by Reinhard Busse and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most Member States Governments have assumed that they have full responsibility and control over their own health services it is becoming increasingly apparent that the Single European Market is having a substantial impact on health services. Recent rulings by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) have, in particular, established the freedom of citizens to choose health care goods and services across borders. To examine the actual relationship between the SEM and health services, this book: - identifies SEM regulations and directives as well as ECJ decisions which explicitly refer to health services and which therefore have a potential impact on the purchasing, supply and delivery of health services, - evaluates the impact of SEM regulations and ECJ decisions on the purchasing, supply and delivery of health services, - identifies outcomes, including both intended and unintended effects, of the SEM on Member States' health services and - develops future scenarios exploring key issues identified in the earlier analysis and evaluation.

Book Health Policy And European Union Enlargement

Download or read book Health Policy And European Union Enlargement written by McKee, Martin and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: · What are the implications of the different levels of health in an enlarged EU? · Will free movement of goods, services and people within an enlarged EU be good for health and health care? · What have we learned from past enlargements? European national policy-makers broadly agree on the core objectives that their health care system should pursue. The list is straightforward: universal access for all citizens, effective care for better health outcomes, efficient use of resources, and high quality services responsive to patient’s concerns. It is a formula that resonates across the political spectrum and which, in various, sometimes inventive configurations, has played a role in most recent European national election campaigns. While there may be consensus on the broader issues, expectations differ between EU countries, and with the enlargement of 2004 matters become more complex. This book seeks firstly to assess the impact of the enlargement process and then to analyse the challenges that lie ahead in the field of health and health policy. Written by leading health policy analysts, the book investigates a host of areas including: · Health care investment· International recruitment of nurses and doctors· Health and safety· Communicable disease control· European pharmaceutical policy Health Policy and European Union Enlargementwill be of interest to students of health policy, economics, public policy and management, as well as health managers and policy-makers. Book Education and Public Policy in the European Union

Download or read book Education and Public Policy in the European Union written by Sarah K. St. John and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fleshes out activities and initiatives in the field of education from across areas of European Union competence in order to highlight the extent to which education and training have penetrated the European Community’s policymaking since its creation. Policies are all too often placed in their individual silos, which can sometimes work against deeper understanding of policymaking and its reach across policy domains. This project avoids such compartmentalisation and instead crosses boundaries to explore education’s relationship with other policy areas, as well as its far-reaching role in the construction of a united Europe. It demonstrates education’s significance across the broad landscape of European integration by presenting a collection of case studies, which represent policy areas that have experienced the infiltration of education. These include: Migration, Health, Agriculture, Multilingualism, Media and Communications, and the environment.

Book The History and Politics of Free Movement within the European Union

Download or read book The History and Politics of Free Movement within the European Union written by Saila Heinikoski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to free movement is the one privilege that EU citizens value the most in the Union, but one that has also created much political controversy in recent years, as the debates preceding the 2016 Brexit referendum aptly illustrate. This book examines how European politicians have justified and criticized free movement from the commencement of the first Commission of the EU-25 in November 2004 to the Brexit referendum in June 2016. The analysis takes into account the discourses of Heads of State, Governments and Ministers of the Interior (or Home Secretaries) of six major European states: the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Romania. In addition to these national leaders, the speeches of European Commissioners responsible for free movement matters are also considered. The book introduces a new conceptual framework for analysing practical reasoning in political discourses and applies it in the analysis of national free movement debates contextualised in respective migration histories. In addition to results related to political discourses, the study unearths wider problems related to free movement, including the diversified and variegated approaches towards different groups of movers as well as the exclusive attitudes apparent in both discourses and policies. The History and Politics of Free Movement within the European Union is of interest to anyone studying national and European politics and ideologies, contemporary history, migration policies and political argumentation.
