Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the creation of Dolly the sheep, the world's most famous clone, triggered an enormous amount of discussion about human cloning, in Dolly Mixtures the anthropologist Sarah Franklin looks beyond that much-rehearsed controversy to some of the other reasons why the iconic animal's birth and death were significant. Building on the work of historians and anthropologists, Franklin reveals Dolly as the embodiment of agricultural, scientific, social, and commercial histories which are, in turn, bound up with national and imperial aspirations. Dolly was the offspring of a long tradition of animal domestication, as well as the more recent histories of capital accumulation through selective breeding, and enhanced national competitiveness through the control of biocapital. Franklin traces Dolly's connections to Britain's centuries-old sheep and wool markets (which were vital to the nation's industrial revolution) and to Britain's export of animals to its colonies—particularly Australia—to expand markets and produce wealth. Moving forward in time, she explains the celebrity sheep's links to the embryonic cell lines and global bioscientific innovation of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first. Franklin combines wide-ranging sources—from historical accounts of sheep-breeding, to scientific representations of cloning by nuclear transfer, to popular media reports of Dolly's creation and birth—as she draws on gender and kinship theory as well as postcolonial and science studies. She argues that there is an urgent need for more nuanced responses to the complex intersections between the social and the biological, intersections which are literally reshaping reproduction and genealogy. In Dolly Mixtures, Franklin uses the renowned sheep as an opportunity to begin developing a critical language to identify and evaluate the reproductive possibilities that post-Dolly biology now faces, and to look back at some of the important historical formations that enabled and prefigured Dollys creation.

Book excerpt: This multi-volume set of books is concerned chiefly with the descendants of Samuel Franklin, son of John Franklin Sr. (1727-1819) of Burke County, North Carolina. John Franklin Sr. (1727-1819) was a Revolu- tionary War soldier, and the Franklin Clan believes he was also a great nephew of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), the American statesman and philosopher who helped draft the Constitution. John Franklin Sr. (1727-1819) married Phebe Parker and had eleven children (five boys and six girls). His son, Samuel Franklin (d.1853), married Dorcas Burns, and had seven children (six boys and one girl). Descendants and relatives (and probably ancestors) lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and elsewhere. Includes some ancestors in England to the early 1500s.

Book excerpt: As noted in our description for Franklin Family History, 1st Edition, this booklet is a comprehensive genealogical study of our branch of the Franklin family. We've traced our history from Robert Franklin, born 1425 in Skipton-upon-Craven, Yorkshire, England, to modern-day U.S.A. Since the publication of that first edition, I have had the opportunity to travel to Kelshall, England to see the home of my ancestor, the first Reverend Edward Franklin (1548-1617). My notes and photos from the trip are contained in the chapters following our ancestral line. We've also included additional information generously provided by the historian of St. Faith's Church in Kelshall, Mr. Peter Gartside. Mr. Gartside's work provides a richer picture of the history and circumstances that would have affected Edward and his family as they lived and worked in the tiny English village. Additionally, we've included a chapter discussing the origin and design of the coat of arms for our specific branch of the Franklin family, one of only four branches of the Franklin family upon whom a coat of arms was bestowed.

Book excerpt: This booklet is a comprehensive genealogical study of our branch of the Franklin family. We've traced our history from Robert Franklin, born 1425 in Skipton-upon-Craven, Yorkshire, England, to 2018 U.S.A. Along the way, we've discovered rectors, deans, sheriffs, and even a president of the University of Cambridge. Most importantly, we've discovered generations of tough, smart, innovative, hardy people who, through a spirit of adventure and an unwavering sense of optimism, helped shape us to be who and what we are today, both as a family and as a country.

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Franklin Family and Collaterals On the death of my father in May, 1909, I came into possession of certain records dealing with the history of the Franklin family which had been collected by my grandfather, and I proposed to put these into more permanent form in order that they might be available for use of other members of my family. In the course of arranging them I found it necessary to communicate with representatives of the various branches of the family in order to confirm some of the details, and by this means I obtained much further information, thus enlarging the scope of the work to a considerable extent. In the result I have been able to compile a list of collateral relatives of the Franklin family which, though not complete, is fairly lengthy, and to this I have added a list of the connections of my mother's family as far as I have been able to trace them, as well as an extract from the records of my wife's mother's family, which were compiled by Mr. Dann. I have had very much assistance from Professor Dr. Brann, of the Breslau Seminary (whose knowledge of Jewish History is unrivalled), as well as from Mr. Colyer-Fergusson, Mr. Percy Isaacs, Mr. Montie Jacobs, Mr. Alfred Henry, Mrs. Goodman Levy, Mrs. Meldola, Mrs. Bamberger, Mrs. Simeon Singer, Mrs. Charles Meyerstein, Mr. Joseph Myers, of Manchester, the Rev. Edwin Franklin, of Southampton, Miss Eliz. Maude Marks, of Birmingham, and many others of the family connections who have taken great trouble in adding to and correcting the records of their respective branches.
