Download or read book The Franklin Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint written by Edwin P. Seaver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franklin Elementary Algebra The method of teaching algebra set forth in this book assumes as a leading principle that algebraic language, like other language. Is best acquired, not through definitions and formal rules, but rather through actual use of the language itself as an instrument of thought. The singular power of algebraic language in analysis and reasoning is under stood only when one has learned to use it in those processes. The earlier a beginner can be taught to use even a little of this language in reasoning, the better; for so may his interest in it be earlier awakened through the conscious exercise of a newr power. Accordingly, the first part of this book is devoted to the solution of easy problems, by the use of simple equations, with one unknown quantity. The few symbols needed are briefly explained in'the first section. The second section is'a carefully arranged collection of problems, interspersed with explanations, as new features in the process of solu tion call for them. Small numbers are used in a por tion of the problems, that the reasoning may with ease be carried on mentally and expressed orally. This oral use of algebraic language is found to be. A very efficient means of instruction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franklin Elementary Arithmetic The method of the book is indicated by its title. It distinguishes arithmetical operations from the science of arithmetic. While it gives a systematic practice in the former, it leaves the latter to be learned after the mere operations have become familiar by practice. N O attempt is made to establish general principles, but the pupil is led to Operate by imitating processes illustrated by simple examples, generally in the concrete. General statements and formal rules are thus rendered unnecessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I take this Opportunity of thanking them for the valuable aid they have rendered me. The criticisms of those engaged in the daily business of teaching are invain able to an author; and I shall feel myself under special obligation to all who will be at the trouble to communicate to me, at any time, such changes, either in methods or lan guage, as their experience may point out. It is only through the cordial co-operation of teachers and authors - by joint labors and mutual efl'orts - that the text-books of the country can be brought to any reasonable degree of perfection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Year Course This book contains a brief review of the fundamental opera tions of algebra followed by a thorough presentation of the topics usually included in the work of the third half year. The material is so arranged that the choice of topics for review or advance study may be easily made. The book contains not only a large number of practical problems but also practical applications of graphs. Material for drill in the manipulation of exponents and radicals will be found in Chapter VII. Great pains have been taken to make the subject of logarithms accessible to beginners. The most difficult part in learning to compute with logarithms is the process of interpolation. Of the various arrangements of logarithmic tables which have been suggested, we have selected the one which renders interpolation easiest. The chapter on logarithms is introduced earlier than usual, on account of the great practical importance of the subject. If desired, it can be taken up later, after Chapter VI. The concept of a function does not receive isolated and abstract treatment; it is pre sented as a fundamental idea in proportion, variation, and graphics. Its connection with problems of everyday life is firmly established. The aims of the First Year Book have been kept in view in the preparation of this text. Emphasis is thrown upon clear ness of exposition and the use of expressions which recall the axiomatic processes involved. Continued stress has been laid upon oral exercises. Several of the practical problems given in the text were suggested by the perusal of an English book, T. Percy Nunn's Exercises in Algebra (including Trigonometry), Part I, 1913. Book Practical Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Elementary Algebra Classic Reprint written by Jos; V. Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Elementary Algebra This book meets the requirements of the College Entrance Board, and contains, besides, chapters on logarithms and on the application of algebra in science and higher mathematics, as a preparation for technical schools. It has been written, as the title indicates, with the object of making elementary algebra possess more practical value, both in the ordinary and also in the cultural or educational sense of the word. It is written as well for those who do not go to college, as for those who do. A wave of interest in mathematical teaching has swept over the United States during the past five or six years, receiving an impetus from the Perry movement in England. Numerous organizations of teachers have been formed, and quite a literature has been built up in the publications of these societies. The author has studied this literature carefully and utilized its suggestions freely. The whole field of exercises has been eagerly searched for more practical problems, and a considerable number of new ones has been introduced. The belief is expressed that with this training in solving such problems the student will be much more likely to apply his algebra to everyday affairs and in advanced studies than without it. The progress of the student through the formal parts of the subject is made easy and rapid. As far as possible the snags and pitfalls have been removed, and the path has been made plain and open. The algebraic notation is wonderfully compact and shorthandlike, and its complexities should not be forced on young minds too early. Much of the pleasure in the study consists in the easy and facile doing of the work assigned. With the difficult exercises, obscure explanations, and unnecessary definitions cut out, rapid progress can be made. The topics are presented in such a way that in case any are imperfectly developed, or left unfinished in class, the average student can get the help he needs from the book. Book School Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Algebra Classic Reprint written by C. A. van Velzer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Algebra The present volume is issued in the hope that it will assist the teacher in the effort to get pupils to Mink and that it will induce pupils to place the subject of Algebra on a rational instead of an arbitrary basis, to work from principles rather than from rules. In the first part of the work we have pursued what is termed the inductive method, but we do not wish this understood as that method which infers general principles from an accumulation of particular cases. This is the inductive reasoning of the natural sciences. But we believe it is never legitimate in mathematics. Induction, as we use the term, means that method which proceeds from the particular to the general. By particular cases, which gradually increase in generality, the mind of the learner is prepared to appreciate the gen eral case, but this general case must so present itself to the learner's mind that he sees that the truth stated must be so and cannot possibly be otherwise. It will be noticed that we have not thought it necessary to complete one subject before taking up another, but subjects have sometimes been treated in an elementary way at first and more completely at some subsequent part of the book. We believe that by this plan students can follow the work more easily and with more profit, and at the same time we are enabled to treat some subjects, especially Factors, Multiples, and Fractions, more fully than is ordinarily done. Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Algebra Classic Reprint written by B. Bridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Algebra This small compendium embraces all which is comprised in the former large and expensive editions, that is either practically useful or theoretically valuable. By introducing Equations and Problems at the earliest stage possible, a novel and instructive feature - which the editor is persuaded cannot fail to excite the curiosity and stimu late the ardour of the young algebraist, so as t0'induce him to pursue his studies with more than usual alacrity, intelligence, and success - has been given to the work. A great variety of new, easy, and interesting problems, which are not contained in former editions, have thus been interspersed through the several chapters. Besides these additions many alterations have been made, either for the sake of uniformity of arrangement, or of rendering the subject still more easy and accessible to youthful minds. Mr. Bridge, nearly forty years ago, was not without a hope that his Elemen tary Treatise on Algebra, ' would find its way into our Public Schools where, it was very well known, this branch of education was [then] but little attended to and it is now confidently hoped, that this new edition will (in consequence of its cheap and improved form) find its way into many schools, where this science is not yet sufficiently attended to. And thus be the means of rendering this instructive study a subject of general education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Beginner s Algebra Classic Reprint written by Claribel Gerrish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Algebra This book aims to give a working knowledge of elementary algebra. It supposes in the pupil such knowledge of arithmetic as is usually obtained before entrance to the highest grade in the grammar school. It introduces multiplication immediately after addition, and teaches factoring while teaching multiplication. It insures by this arrangement a saving of time, accu racy in the use of signs, and an early familiarity with the structure of those expressions which form the staple of algebra. It treats the equation as derived from the problem. It leads to the problem by exercises in expression and in forming equalities. It helps the pupil to become familiar with problems of the ordinary types by means of exercises in their construction. Its purpose throughout is to tell the pupil little that he can see, and to help him to see by employing well directed questions. It is a teaching book, useful to any beginner.
