While some of this work has been canonized, much has been forgotten. The Text and Studies: Contributions to Biblical and Patristic Literature collection resurrects these documents in a renewed and focused study, attempting to glean the wisdom and insight of the ancients. These volumes dig deep into apocryphal literature with critical analyses, close readings, and examinations of the original manuscripts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John, Jesus, and History, Volume 4: Jesus Remembered in the Johannine Situation addresses the narrative development of the Johannine corpus over as many as seven decades. Contributors connect how Jesus is presented in the Fourth Gospel to how the memory of his ministry is developed in Palestine during the earliest period (30–70 CE), in Asia Minor in the later first century (70–100 CE), and in the main and alternative streams of post-Johannine early Christianity (100 CE and later). Contributors include Paul N. Anderson, Harold W. Attridge, Giovanni Bazzana, Jonathan Bernier, Sherri Brown, Rex D. Butler, Andrew J. Byers, Stephen C. Carlson, Warren Carter, Amber M. Dillon, Jonathan A. Draper, Musa W. Dube, Charles E. Hill, Karen L. King, Peter T. Lanfer, Kasper Bro Larsen, Ian N. Mills, Alicia D. Myers, Reinhard Pummer, Tuomas Rasimus, David Rensberger, Clare K. Rothschild, Geoffrey Smith, Travis D. Trost, Meredith J. C. Warren, Kenneth L. Waters Sr., and Lorne R. Zelyck. The collection pushes Johannine, Jesus, and early Christian history studies in new directions, raising possibilities for future research.

Book excerpt: This volume investigates the early, second-century reception of the Fourth Gospel. This is an era when its fortunes are surrounded by silence and mystery. It was assumed, until quite recently, that Gnostic and other so-called heterodox groups were the first ones to appreciate this gospel, and hence the mainstream Christians avoided using it until Irenaeus rescued it for the church. Lately, this view has been challenged by several scholars for several reasons. The contributions in this volume, written by leading specialists in their respective fields, offer an approachable, fresh, comprehensive and up-to-date view of the second-century reception of John s Gospel, in a situation where new understandings about various forms of early Christianity and its multiformity have started to emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume IX of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, the series editors return to a collection that they had thought complete. Archaeological discoveries presented them with new early Christian texts that needed publication. This volume is divided into two parts: newly discovered fragments and writings from a variety of sources, and additional commentaries by Origen. These new fragments include: . the Gospel of Peter and the Apocalypse of Peter. the Diatessaron of Tatian and the Vision of Paul. the Apocalypse of the Virgin and the Apocalypse of Sedrach. The Testament of Abraham and the Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena. the Narrative of Zosimus and the Epistles of Clement. the Apology of Aristides the Philosopher. the Passion of the Scillitan Martyrs. epistle to Gregory and Origen's commentary
