Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 58 B. C. Rome was the superpower of the Mediterranean world, and in that year Julius Caesar took up the governorship of the Roman Province in southern France or Gaul, as it was then called. The Roman Senate expected Caesar to govern the province, extract a reasonable amount of revenue, and guard the frontier against incursion by the many Gaulish tribes to the north. Caesar had something else in mind -- the conquest of all Gaul. Within two years he deftly employed his legions to inflict a series of catastrophic defeats upon the Gauls and occupied the eastern half of the country. He then put his troops into winter quarters, sending a single legion under its commander, Publius Crassus, west into Brittany with orders to take hostages to keep the peace. Crassus took the hostages but could not keep the peace. The fiercely independent tribes led by the Veneti bitterly resented giving hostages to Rome. At their first opportunity they seized Roman officers as hostages, then demanded return of their own hostages in exchange. When Publius Crassus rejected their demands, the Gauls revolted. The Fourth Part of Gaul is the story of that revolt as experienced by Marcus Brutus Pontus, a young tribune and staff officer, one of the hostages taken by the Gauls. His captors place the inquisitive young officer in the hands of a Veneti magistrate for safekeeping. This assignment insures him a unique position from which to view the spread of the insurrection and the huge naval battle between the Gaulish sailing fleet and Caesar's Roman galleys. Marcus narrowly escapes death during the catastrophic defeat of the Gauls. In the aftermath of the battle, many Gauls fleeing Caesar's wrath sail for Britain, while a small party of five ships crammed with families and soldiers sails west on the Atlantic. Led by a Greek pilot, they follow a long forgotten Carthaginian trade route taking with them their captive tribune. In the course of the long voyage, Marcus learns to navigate and handle the ship. His developing relationship with the sister of the expedition's leader involves him increasingly in the struggle of the expedition to survive the frigid winter and treacherous attack on their settlement at the mouth of the Connecticut River. By spring the Gaulish leaders come to see their Roman hostage as the essential key to their survival in the hostile environment of the new land. They themselves have become uniquely dependent on the hostage they have taken.

Book excerpt: 52 BC is the key year of the Gallic Revolt, with the near-disastrous Roman defeat at Gergovia followed by the climactic victory over the Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix at Alesia. In 52, BC Caesar's continued strategy of annihilation had engendered a spirit of desperation, which detonated into a revolt of Gallic tribes under the leadership of the charismatic young Arvernian noble Vercingetorix. Major engagements were fought at Noviodunum, Avaricum, and Gergovia, with the last action being the most serious reverse that Caesar faced in the whole of the Gallic War. However, Vercingetorix soon realized that he was unable to match the Romans in pitched battle. Taking advantage of the tribesmen's superior knowledge of their home territory, Vercingetorix began a canny policy of small war and defensive manoeuvres, which gravely hampered Caesar's movements by cutting off his supplies. For Caesar it was to be a grim summertime – his whole Gallic enterprise faced disaster. In the event, by brilliant leadership, force of arms, and occasionally sheer luck, Caesar succeeded in stamping out the revolt in a long and brutal action culminating in the siege of Alesia. Vercingetorix finally surrendered and Alesia was to be the last significant resistance to the Roman will. Never again would a Gallic warlord independent of Rome hold sway over the Celts of Gaul.

Book The War for Gaul

Download or read book The War for Gaul written by Julius Caesar and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Imagine a book about an unnecessary war written by the ruthless general of an occupying army - a vivid and dramatic propaganda piece that forces the reader to identify with the conquerors and that is designed, like the war itself, to fuel the limitless political ambitions of the author. Could such a campaign autobiography ever be a great work of literature - perhaps even one of the greatest? It would be easy to think not, but such a book exists -and it helped transform Julius Caesar from a politician on the make into the Caesar of legend. This remarkable new translation of Caesar's famous but underappreciated War for Gaul captures, like never before in English, the gripping and powerfully concise style of the future emperor's dispatches from the front lines in what are today France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. While letting Caesar tell his battle stories in his own way, distinguished classicist James O'Donnell also fills in the rest of the story in a substantial introduction and notes that together explain why Gaul is the "best bad man's book ever written"--A great book in which a genuinely bad person offers a bald-faced, amoral description of just how bad he has been. Complete with a chronology, a map of Gaul, suggestions for further reading, and an index, this feature-rich edition captures the forceful austerity of a troubling yet magnificent classic - a book that, as O'Donnell says, 'gets war exactly right and morals exactly wrong.'" -- Front jacket flap

Book Self organising Multi agent Systems Algorithmic Foundations Of Cyber anarcho socialism

Download or read book Self organising Multi agent Systems Algorithmic Foundations Of Cyber anarcho socialism written by Jeremy Pitt and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm of self-organisation is fundamental to theories of collective action in economic science and democratic governance in political science. Self-organisation in these social systems critically depends on voluntary compliance with conventional rules: that is, rules which are made up, mutually agreed, and modifiable 'on the fly'. How, then, can we use the self-organisation observed in such social systems as an inspiration for decentralised computer systems, which can face similar problems of coordination, cooperation and collaboration between autonomous peers?Self-Organising Multi-Agent Systems presents an innovative and systematic approach to transforming theories of economics and politics (and elements of philosophy, psychology, and jurisprudence) into an executable logical specification of conventional rules. It shows how sets of such rules, called institutions, provide an algorithmic basis for designing and implementing cyber-physical systems, enabling intelligent software processes (called agents) to manage themselves in the face of competition for scarce resources. It also provides a basis for implementing socio-technical systems with interacting human and computational intelligences in a way that is sustainable, fair and legitimate. This interdisciplinary book is essential reading for anyone interested in the 'planned emergence' of global properties, commonly-shared values or successful collective action, especially as a product of social construction, knowledge management and political arrangements. For those studying both computer science and social sciences, this book offers a radically new gateway to a transformative understanding of complex system development and social system modelling.Understanding how a computational representation of qualitative values like justice and democracy can lead to stability and legitimacy of socio-technical systems is among the most pressing software engineering challenges of modern times. This book can be read as an invitation to make the Digital Society better.Related Link(s)

Book excerpt: The enemy were overpowered and took to flight. The Romans pursued as far as their strength enabled them to run' Between 58 and 50 BC Julius Caesar conquered most of the area now covered by France, Belgium and Switzerland, and invaded Britain twice, and The Conquest of Gaul is his record of these campaigns. Caesar’s narrative offers insights into his military strategy and paints a fascinating picture of his encounters with the inhabitants of Gaul and Britain, as well as lively portraits of the rebel leader Vercingetorix and other Gallic chieftains. The Conquest of Gaulcan also be read as a piece of political propaganda, as Caesar sets down his version of events for the Roman public, knowing he faces civil war on his return to Rome. Revised and updated by Jane Gardner, S. A. Handford’s translation brings Caesar’s lucid and exciting account to life for modern readers. This volume includes a glossary of persons and places, maps, appendices and suggestions for further reading.

Book excerpt: "The Commentaries on the Gallic War" is Julius Caesar's firsthand account of the Gallic Wars, written as a third-person narrative. In it Caesar describes the battles and intrigues that took place in the nine years he spent fighting the Germanic peoples and Celtic peoples in Gaul that opposed Roman conquest. The Gallic Wars were a series of military campaigns waged by the Roman proconsul Julius Caesar against several Gallic tribes. Rome's war against the Gallic tribes lasted from 58 BC to 50 BC and culminated in the decisive Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, in which a complete Roman victory resulted in the expansion of the Roman Republic over the whole of Gaul (mainly present-day France and Belgium). "The Commentaries on the Civil War" is an account written by Julius Caesar of his war against Gnaeus Pompeius and the Senate. It covers the events of 49-48 BC, from shortly before Caesar's invasion of Italy to Pompey's defeat at the Battle of Pharsalus and flight to Egypt with Caesar in pursuit. It closes with Pompey assassinated, Caesar attempting to mediate rival claims to the Egyptian throne, and the beginning of the Alexandrian War.
