Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes to the Fourth Book of Reading Lessons In dealing with literature the teacher must have, as in his other work, one object steadily in view: - his pupils must understand clearly everything the lesson contains; nothing must be taken for granted; it will not do to take their own word for it, or to make them learn accurately the appended notes; the teacher must satisfy himself in his own way that the work is understood. It is very vexatious to find how little is really taken in by the pupil on reading over a lesson in the usual way. Notes will give information, make suggestions, call attention to what might be passed over as common-place; but they can never supply the place of the teacher; it is he alone that can adapt the question to the needs or capacities of the pupil, he alone that can meet the difficulties and arouse the dormant intelligence of each. He will speedily find that he will have to draw largely upon his own knowledge, and rely upon notes only where his own resources fail. The lessons in literature must not be lectures, must not be examinations; they must be a continued talk, a familiar conversation between teacher and pupil, for this is the only way that thought can be reached. The knowledge thus conveyed, and the mental activity thus aroused, will be far more beneficial than any other kind of teaching can possibly be; it makes intelligent boys and girls. The teacher will thus see that the very best author to compose "sets of questions on literature" is himself. There is not a more wearying, deadening, or destructive work for teacher or student than to set himself to studying literature by a series of questions. This is the reason why no "questions" are appended to the Fourth Reader. On the other hand, when his work is well prepared, the teacher will find nothing in the whole range of his work so delightful, so instructive to himself and to his charge, as literature; he will find, and be surprised to find, that on going over the same ground again, he will rarely ask the same question the same way; new ideas will continually arise, new modes of illustration, new facts. The lesson must not be made prosy. It is well always to start with what the pupil knows himself, and gradually add with his own help to his stock of knowledge. Thus every question or objection on the teacher's part must have a different bearing on the subject in view. By way of illustration we may take "Iceland," The objects in view are: to give a clear idea of the climate, the inhabitants, the food, etc. Beginning with the position of the island, its size, etc., - "Wouldn't a boy like to live in Iceland?" "Yes, sir." "No, sir." "You say, 'Yes, sir, 'now why?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fourth Book of Lessons

Download or read book Fourth Book of Lessons written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Book of Lessons: For the Use of Schools The Fourth Book of Lessons having been compiled on the same principles as the First, Second, and Third, Teachers are recommended to pursue the same methods in using it. - Their Pupils should be made to spell, without the book, all the difficult words in every Lesson; and, though it is expected that Grammar and Geography be now taught from text-books, yet Teachers should continue to put occasional questions on both these branches of education, in the course of the ordinary examinations. Any sentence can be made an exercise in Grammar; and there is a whole Section of Lessons devoted to subjects connected with Geography, which ought to be explained from Maps. The Section of Lessons on Scripture History will aid Teachers in communicating to their Pupils an accurate knowledge of the historical parts of the Bible. When an object described in any Lesson, or a plate or drawing of it can be procured, the object itself, or the drawing, ought to be shown to the Pupils and the Teacher should require them to explain, not only what is said of it in the text-book, but all its distinguishing properties, as well as those which it has in common with other objects of the same kind. After having been examined on a Lesson, they should also be made to state, in their own words, all that they have learned from it. Masters will derive considerable assistance in teaching, and Pupils in learning the Lessons, from the list of Latin and Greek roots in the Appendix. Those the First Section have been arranged according to the Lessons in which they first occur, and have been selected at the rate of six roots to each page of reading. It will be of advantage, therefore, to teach the First Section by prescribing for each Lesson, a page to be spelled, read, and explained, and six roots to be committed to memory. In hearing the Latin and Greek roots, Teachers will be careful to examine their Pupils on the formation of English words from them, by joining prefixes, affixes, and other words: and they will also cause them to give, in addition to the examples in the book, as many English words formed from the same root as they can recollect. The object of this exercise is to accustom young persons to habits of combination and analysis, as well as to give them a command of expressions in their own language. When the Teacher is examining on the Reading Lesson, he will make his Pupils point out all the words, of which he has learned tho Latin and Greek roots, explain them according to their derivation, and show how they are formed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Book of Reading Lessons: With Illustrations From Giacomelli and Other Eminent Artists He soon wins for himself a snug nest under the greenwood tree or out upon the prairie. His opened eye learns the Indian woodcraft, and his quickened ear distinguishes kindly voices in the solitudes. He gratefully enjoys the bracing air, the brilliant sunshine, the moonlight sleeping on the forest-side, the glories of our Indian summer. And when winter breathes cold upon him from "the White North" - from Franklin's grave - the pioneer keenly enjoys by his back-log fire the tuneful pages that tell him how the first bold adventurers came over to win the American wilds, and how the red-cross flag came to float over so much of this broad earth. Such has been the life of most of our pioneers. This Book is designed to be read by their children and their grandchildren. Can it do better than reflect the stages of our national life? The look of attention and the tone Of benevolence, in which these lessons were conveyed, will indeed be missed, but 'his spirit will still speak to the hearts of those over Whom be bent with more than parental solicitude.' In re calling the memory'of one who, for their sakes, forsook not only the first circle Of literary distinction, but the, more en dearing one Of kindred and of home, it will not fail also to convey the salutary truth, that the highest attainments Of the scholar may be still further exalted and ennobled by re ligion; that the lustre of genius never appears to such ad vantage as through the veil Of humility; and that the moral beauty of virtue itself acquires an additional charm, when exercised in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader: For the Use of Schools As it respects the general plan of these works, the author lays little claim to originality. The idea of prefacing the lessons by a series of Rule, ado ted in the Third Reader, and in this also, was introduced by Murray, ong since, and has been acted Upon by others. The application of these rules, as practised in the last two volumes of this series, is believed to be peculiar, and it is hoped may be useful. The following of the reading lessons with spelling lessons derived from the reading matter, has been long practised and is here adopted. The pointing out of inaccurate renunciation, and the questions for examina tion, as to the sense an meaning of the lessons, are common and obvious means of instruction. The Etymological Exercises in this volume are a new application of what has been before the public for several years. The plan of requiring pupils to study reading lessons, and one which is deemed very important, appears to have been in successful practice in Europe for a considerable period. The objects of this have been stated to be, to render the acquiring of the art of Reading more easy and agreeable to the pupil to make the particular knowledge contained in the lessons available to him and, by a careful analysis of each sentence, to give him a thorough acquaintance with our language. These objects are too important to be overlooked, and the author has sought to ensure their attainment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fifth Book of Reading Lessons: Authorized by the Council of Public Instruction for Ontario The chief Object regarded in the preparation of this volume, the Fifih Book of the Series, has been to supply the pupils of the Public Schools with such specimens of the best English authors as are examples of correct style and pure taste, and are suit able for use as Exercises in Reading or Elocution. At the same time, in the selection of the extracts, attention was given both to the extent and character of the information that they supplied, and to the influence which they might exert on the young scholar in engaging his interest, stimulating his desire for knowledge, and forming his character. The subjects em braced in the volume comprehend not merely Literature, Art and Industry, but also the Sciences; not that it is intended to teach any of them by a summary, but that such readings seemed essential to the completeness of the book with a view to the purposes for which it is designed. A classified arrangement of the pieces has not been adopted, as it appeared more de sirable to have, at least generally, a variety of subjects in con secutive extracts. An Index, however, is subjoined, by means of which the book may be systematically read according to departments or branches of knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Reading Book The Elocutionary Notes and Introduction have been prepared, as far as possible, in untechnical language, and the former have been so constructed as not to reduce the pupil to the level of an automaton. In the Literary Notes and Questions, the aim has been to assist the teacher in training the pupils to think, to comprehend the author's meaning, and to realize the excellences Of his style and the beauty or nobility Of his thoughts. The exercises in Spelling, Grammar, and Composition, have been graded to suit the progressive wants of the pupils, and no pains have been spared to utilize the reading lessons as they should be utilized, for teaching these important subjects. To Composition in particular, much attention has been paid, and the pupil who faithfully consults the Introduction, and performs the work as signed under this head, cannot fail to acquire the power Of expressing himself, both in speaking and in writing, with ease, accuracy, and flexi bility. Book excerpt: Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!

Book Fourth Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fourth Reader Classic Reprint written by Franklin B. Dyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Reader This Fourth Reader is designed to meet the children on their own level and to lead them by easy stages to a higher plane. They are now at an age when their ability to understand and appreciate is far in advance of their reading ability. They enjoy great stories and appreciate fine sentiment if the language does not offer too many difficulties. In the preparation of this Reader, therefore, special attention has been given to keeping the vocabulary within range of the pupil's ability. The earlier part of the book contains selections that are simple in vocabulary and sentence structure, and the later lessons provide for a steady growth, without introducing tedious difficulties. Ideas and ideals, however, are more important than forms and vocabularies. Already the children have begun to enjoy some of the masterpieces of literature. It frequently happens that they can appreciate part of a long story before they can read it in the complete form. It is also true that the reading of a simplified version of a classic is often the best introduction to the reading of the classic itself. In the selections that are here abridged from longer works, the spirit and the language of the author have been preserved. Moreover, these selections are always complete units and are of sufficient length to aid in establishing habits of sustained attention and interest. While most of the selections are fresh and unhackneyed, classics that every child should know have also been included. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers: Fourth Reader In this reader frequent use has been made of the legends and folk stories of different nations, because the human interest in such stories appeals strongly to the child's mind. Fairy stories from Hans Christian Andersen and other sources have also been included, for this is the age when the child's enjoyment of the fairy tale has reached its zenith. Much has been accomplished in the education of the young when a desire to read has been aroused. But the reading must be select in content as well as literary in form; hence stories of patriotism and lessons with a direct ethical purpose have been included in this book. Such reading tends directly to the develop ment of character, and the ethical purpose in the lesson is best taught through the interest in the story.
