Book Juvencus Four Books of the Gospels

Download or read book Juvencus Four Books of the Gospels written by Scott McGill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juvencus’ Evangeliorum libri IV, or "The Four Books of the Gospels," is a verse rendering of the gospel narrative written ca. 330 CE. Consisting of around 3200 hexameter lines, it is the first of the Latin "Biblical epics" to appear in antiquity, and the first classicizing, hexameter poem on a Christian topic to appear in the western tradition. As such, it is an important text in literary and cultural history. This is the first English translation of the entire poem. The lack of a full English translation has kept many scholars and students, particularly those outside of Classics, and many educated general readers from discovering it. With a thorough introduction to aid in the interpretation and appreciation of the text this clear and accessible English translation will enable a clearer understanding of the importance of Juvencus’ work to later Latin poetry and to the early Church.

Book excerpt: Why does the New Testament contain four Gospels—four different accounts of the same Man? And don’t the Gospels contradict one another? Masterful Bible teacher Arthur Pink explains how the four Gospels do not contradict but rather collaborate in order to provide us with a deeper, multifaceted description of the person of Jesus Christ. In Matthew, we see Jesus as Messiah and King of the Jews. In Mark, we are introduced to the Servant of Jehovah. In Luke, we see the human Jesus as the Son of Man, Adam’s descendant. Finally, in John, we thrill to the supernatural Jesus who is undoubtedly the Son of God. No believer can truly know Jesus without having an understanding of the four distinct roles He fulfilled in His time on earth. Pink’s in-depth look at the four Gospels will boost your faith and bring you ever closer to a Savior who is fully human, fully divine, and above everything, Lord of all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospels are the center and climax of Scripture. In them we finally meet Jesus: the anticipated fulfillment of the stories and promises of the Old Testament. In The Four Gospels: Jesus, the Hope of the World, Patrick Schreiner demonstrates the critical importance of the gospel narratives, not only as the stories of our Savior, but also as the climax of God’s story. Schreiner’s close and nuanced readings of the Gospels skillfully illustrate how the stories of Jesus, and even his very words, interact with the preceding testimony of Israel. For each Gospel, he provides outlines, an overview of the book’s content, and an examination of theological themes and emphases. Schreiner concludes each chapter with an examination of the Gospel as a discipleship text, giving insight for what it means to follow Jesus. As part of the Scripture Connections series, The Four Gospels includes helpful sidebars with ancient, biblical, gospel, and life connections. Written in an accessible manner, this book will help readers engage more deeply with the stories of the Savior. The Scripture Connections series is a concise and accessible guide to the Bible that focuses on Scripture's natural unity. Each volume covers a particular set of biblical books, providing a thorough overview of the content and background in a shorter page count than a traditional textbook. The authors bring forward connections between Scripture and the ancient world, other biblical texts, the good news of the gospel, and everyday life, inviting readers to engage more deeply with God's Word.

Download or read book The Four Gospels written by Christoph Rau and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When a theologian speaks of the widespread misconception nowadays, that faith is an intellectual holding of what-is-possible, they underpin a wretched reduction of faith. Since the interest of New Testament studies shifted to philosophical details, the word of the Bible was treated intellectually, thus shaking the foundation of faith in many people." -- Christoph Rau Could a deeper cause of today's myriad human troubles be related to a dwindling or even nonexistent familiarity with the four New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? This is the view of Christoph Rau, for whom today's prevailing approach to theological research--which treats the ancient religious texts more as literary products than authentic records of spiritual experience--is, if anything, a contributing factor in our modern alienation from the spirit. In this book, Rau presents the results of five decades of research, demonstrating the independent structure of each of the four canonical Gospels. Through clear analyses, he illumines the distinctive stylistic features of each composition, revealing the design principles through which the meaning and goal of each Gospel can be understood. Beyond the intrinsic value of each Gospel, the author draws on their special features to explain how the spiritual richness of the four written works is fully revealed only by considering the pre-Christian religions, because each of the evangelists describes the incarnation of the Son of God from the perspective of his own mystery religion. Furthermore, the author succeeds in showing that the Gospels, despite their seeming contradictions, are elements of a common organism. This book is a translation from German of Die Vier um den Einen: Wesensart und spiritueller Hintergrund der Evangelien (Verlag Dr. Dieter Winkler, 2008).
