Book excerpt: Charles Dickens attained an astounding level of popular acclaim during his lifetime; Victorian audiences clamored for his traditional Christmastime stories every year. The tale "A Message from the Sea" is an example of one of Dickens' Christmas publications; although the nautical setting of the story is not what one would traditionally expect from a holiday publication, the themes of charity, good will, and rising above seemingly insurmountable odds are sure to spark a warm glow in readers' hearts any time of the year.
Download or read book Fabulous Fossils written by Donald G. Mikulic and published by University of State of New York. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fabulous Fossils is a timely and significant contribution to the history of science and evolutionary paleontology. It details humanity's interest and developing understanding of trilobites from the recovery of these fossils at 15,000 year-old Paleolithic sites, to the 18th century appreciation that they were arthropod fossils. This volume elaborates on the development of modern trilobite research in Australia and a number of American, European, and Asian countries"--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Dinosaurs and Other Reptiles from the Mesozoic of Mexico written by Héctor E. Rivera-Sylva and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This overview of dinosaur discoveries in Mexico synthesizes current information about the geography and environment of the region during the Mesozoic when it was the western margin of the ancient continent of Pangea. The book summarizes research on various groups, including turtles, lepidosauromorphs, plesiosaurs, crocodyliforms, pterosaurs, and last but not least, dinosaurs. In addition, chapters focus on trackways and other trace fossils and on K/P boundary (the Chicxulub crater, beneath the Gulf of Mexico, has been hypothesized as the site of the boloid impact that killed off the dinosaurs). Dinosaurs and Other Reptiles from the Mesozoic of Mexico is an up-to-date, informative volume on an area that has not been comprehensively described until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the results of researches on the Post-Oligocene fossil bryozoa of North America and forms the concluding part of our studies on the Tertiary and Quaternary faunas, those of the Eocene and Oligocene epochs having been published in 1920 under the title of North American Early Tertiary Bryozoa. The present work, like the companion volume on Early Tertiary faunas, was undertaken under the joint auspices of the United States Geological Survey and United States National Museum. Almost without exceptiion all the type specimens described and illustrated in the present volume are contained in the paleontological collections of the United States National Museum.
Download or read book British Upper Carboniferous Stratigraphy written by C.J. Cleal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes the results of a survey of British Upper Carboniferous sites, undertaken between 1978 and 1990 as part of the Geological Conservation Review (GCR). The GCR was the first attempt to assess the scientific significance of all Britain's geological sites and has proved a landmark in the development of a coherent geological conservation strategy in this country. To ensure that the assessments were based on a firm logical and scientific foundation, the range of scientific interest was divided into ninety-seven discrete subject 'blocks', reflecting the natural divisions of stratigraphy, palaeogeography and geological process; Westphalian stratigraphy and Namurian stratigraphy were two of these blocks. The first stage in the survey was a review of the literature, to establish a compre hensive database of sites. From this, a provisional list of potentially significant sites was made and this was circulated to all relevant specialists in this country and abroad. At the same time, the sites were visited to assess their physical condition and whether the interest was still extant. In some cases, excavation (so-called 'site-cleaning') was carried out to see if the interest of a site could be resurrected or enhanced. The com ments made by the specialists and the field observations were then used to produce a second site list, which again was circulated for comment.
